I think there's a lot we can learn from Ukraine. Americans are used to overwhelming firepower and lightning maneuver. That's great when we have it. But if we're talking about a multi-front war, that may not be an option. But what if we could deploy quickly to the less critical areas and use our forces to tie up the enemy for a year or two? We could rely heavily on trenches and drones. If we do that, we can use overwhelming force on one or two fronts, and then tie up the enemies on all other fronts. We defeat one enemy good enough, and then shuffle the workload and move the overwhelming force to the other fronts. For the first front, we switch to a Ukraine-style long-term defense meant to grind down the enemy's resolve and make victory for them impossible.

TBH, I was little surprised that Multi-Domain doctrine wasn't already in Combined Forces doctrine papers. We have 3500 special forces in Poland not attached to any units and directly commanded by Polish Pentagon in American way. Though we miss nuclear deterrent, Poland built up WOT (territorial defense deterrent) to cover in a Polish defense war concept all Combined Forces actions taken by Polish Army, which seemed natural and really obvious to us in Poland. This is why from 2014 Poland is so obsessed with building up Polish A2/AD and putting pressure on American Industry to provide Poland with modern radars to Polish Patriots and anti-air combat system (IBCS) on level with already existing Polish artillery system Topaz.

When I was active duty we worked with some UK counterparts. They were great soldiers. One of them quipped about how American combat doctrine scares them. When asked why they replied “In the absence of orders we hunker down and wait for reinforcements. In the absence of orders you guys advance. It’s crazy.” The fact that America puts so much trust in its NCOs is huge. The US military rewards thinking outside the box and taking initiative.

Deterrence only works against opponents that don't rule with an iron fist. Hybrid warfare is already being used by them, and it has had enormous impact on the civilian and political sectors in the first world countries over the years. Meanwhile, the autocratic states of Russia, China, and North Korea, are growing increasingly more menacing, and they show clear intent to overthrow the current world order in its entirety (although North Korea is just a puppet state under Chinese influence). Everything can be blamed on Kissinger, who came up with the idea when he was working under Nixon, that by using economic persuasion then these states will see the allure of a non-oppressed populace and its inherent economic growth. Kissinger's plan has still not worked, at all, in any nation. So while the West has continued to feed money into lawless states in the global scene, and gained high profits because of slave labor and criminally cheap manufacturing, they've habitually been stealing intellectual properties in those states. And because their political narrative has always been to conquer their surroundings and to become the strongest on the planet and spread the greatness of communism, of which Russia isn't fooling anyone, it has made them into adversaries that can threaten not just NATO, but also the world. If they do gain world control, then it'll be the end of democracy for real. It's why deterrence and persuasion isn't working, and will never work; becausd their populations are too afraid to pay the ultimate cost en masse in order to bring down their military dictatorships.

The US was head and shoulders above everyone at military drones from the end of WW2 through to VERY recently and still do a ton of R&D, it's just that the rest of the planet started to catch up. You might also might wonder _why_ the Ukraine war now has so many drones. In 2014 the Donbas war drones were almost unheard of in the Ukrainian military but the US had just spent a decade in the middle east using Predator drones to blow up Soviet armed Iraqis for the second time. Then after the Donbas war the US sends trainers and equipment to Ukraine and when Russia invaded the second time suddenly the Ukrainian military dusts off a bunch of drones and goes to war against Russia. Sure, consumer drones became more common between 2014 and 2022 but that doesn't mean they'd just suddenly integrate them into the military overnight from scratch but it would be way easier if you'd just spent 8 years being trained in similar systems by a bunch of USAF operators Also you may want to actually wait until your more then halfway through a video to draw conclusions, especially when that video starts in the Cold War and you're talking about the 2020s, he spends the last quarter of the video going "drone drone drone UAV automatic kill system drone drone UAV drone pilot drone".

As a Viet Nam veteran I can tell you that NCO's make or break any combat unit. How well this new concept will work will depend on how well future NCO's are trained and if they are retained after their training. Generals plan, officers order, NCOs implement and us lowly trooper die and are injured to make it happen. I hope these generals know what they are doing because no amount of orders, implementing, or injured and dying can overcome a stupid plan!

I worked in LA during the early 1980s. Chris was right; the Reagan buildup was wild. In fairness, it started during the Carter administration. My clients were building everything-from valves for the space shuttle's main fuel tank to jet fighters. They were the most intelligent people this country has ever produced. I still miss the old Hughes aircraft. Rumour had it that they would tell the DOD what to buy. As a funny note, at Hughes, the older secretaries still told stories about Howard Hughes (1982). - they called him "Uncle Howie." God, it was a wild, good time. It's also a reflection of the country itself. Saudi Arabia for example does not allow their military to think for itself afraid of a coup. They (government or royal family) lose their power without a top-down approach. That is why they have been so ineffective against the Houti's, despite a ton of advanced American weaponry.

The US military has always had a multi tier approach to evolution of doctrine 1. Every mission of every type has an After Action Review where everyone involved has to give 3 goods and 3 bads. This is at the lowest level this is happening. The mission leader(for us as MPs it was the squad leader) then briefed the commander. The commander took what adaptations we were doing on the ground and shared them with other company commanders. This all effected local SOPs. 2. This would eventually get pushed up the CoC. At the theater level when people are deploying in they usually receive an updated fresh TTP training over about 2 weeks. 3. This all gets pushed up to various MOS centers of excellence where training is standardized job wide so every MP unit is getting updates from down range roughly everyb6 months training is slightly modified. 4. Eventually TRADOC updates basic training and MOS school training curriculums. Not to mention service academies have a center for lessons learned where cadets as part of course projects take extensive deep dives into major things and publish it like a student would publish a doctoral science experiment study in a journal. The Army has always been this way. Long before any business book was written. It's most evident I think in WW2 with how the Army evolved following initial combat in Africa.

@@gow1044 Reminds me of the story of why the CIA was formed. Army intelligence would say that the enemy had way more capable tanks and way more of them so that we would increase the army budget. The Air Force would say the enemy air forces were growing too fast and they had new technology, and that would increase the Air Force budget… and so on. The CIA had to be formed to get an independent opinion from the services.

I've been reading about the Army's promises about how they have and/or will "transform" for almost 3 decades now, but they still lose more wars than they win. In the late 1990s and into the late 2000s, it was called "RMA" (a "Revolution in Military Affairs"). In the case of WW3, the draft would be instated, and we would have around 100 million troops, over the current 2 million, China has 2 million active troops to match US, but if China enacted a draft (which they would) they would have around 400 million military aged males, so we are already outnumbered 4 to 1.

Hitler has been pushing things his way from very beginning, as he initially promised that germany will be ready around 1944. Also Stalin relaxed his iron grip, true and considerably - but while he allowed breathing space and learned to delegate, he remained very much top down.

Hitler pushed his way more on a strategic scale in the beginning of the war, of course, he was pushing his agenda, his vision of the future. After the debacle of moscow and the retreat of the germans in 1941, he issued his "halt" order, which actually worked and it must had given him the confidence of meddling on operational and tactical questions reserved for the commanders in the field, since he issued an order that, in his view at least, saved the germans in USSR. This meddling grew steadily as the war went on, especially after the summer of 1943 when Germany began his overall defensive standing.

A low tech enemy keeps massing small amounts of troops and coming to a border, firing some shit a couple of times and retreat. This done over a period of 1 year and after the year has passed your AI systems thinks massing troops near the border is a normal thing and nothing strange and that´s how the attack on Israel on Oct. 7th happened. @@Patson20 Agreed. Marines are singularly trained to fight in littoral combat. That's where there's an important strategic merging of land and sea. Island hopping is littoral combat. Establishing a beachhead for the Navy is littoral combat. Fighting in the plains of Central Europe is not littoral combat, and should be left to the Army. Yes there will be some overlap, but the Marines mission is very different than the Army mission. Marines deploy from the sea, establish control over a littoral area, and make it so the Navy can advance. This is their function.

(This would violate the Key West Agreement on how the service branches operate, for one thing) -The Typhoon system DOES launch SM-6 SAM missiles, but the range numbers (and the pic he showed at 19:03) is actually about the Tomahawk land/sea attack cruise missile, which the Typhoon can also launch. (Typhoon is basically a truck-mounted version of the Navy's VLS ship launchers) -At 20:36, the BSB unit is labelled as "Air Defense Battalion". This is actually a logistics support battalion (for the missile units). -Picture at 26:13 is actually a Raven observer drone, not the Switchblade.

Not sure about the new rifle for the US army as it uses a 6.8 mm round which has more power but no one else is using the round. Thus, if there is an ammo issue the soldiers are left high and dry. With the current rifle using the 5.56 round they can at least get spare ammo from allied forces. If the new rifle is going to be used then other allied nations need to adopt the standard or the US risks supply issues and the soldiers suffer.

This is a very hot take because you’re probably right, but do drone swarms play to the current strengths of FPV drones? Current FPVs are very hard to spot, very hard to counteract and usually have the element of surprise. Drone swarms would be much more vulnerable to air burst ammunition and EW, and those systems are likely to be active in a location important enough to warrant a drone swarm attack.

Another extremely well presented video on a very important topic(or, hopefully...very unimportant topic, on the off chance we get lucky and WW3 never happens in our life times). My dad was a e-5 Navy Corpsman whose since passed away, but I know he would have loved watching your videos with me. I grew up watching the history channel and MASH all of the time with him as a kid, and ive grown to watch just as much content on military history/doctrine as he did. I think one of the biggest question marks with this new "Multi Domain" approach is going to largely come down to two main things: 1. How well can our NCOs dictate the battlefield and effectively and efficiently use their guys(given a good NCO was the backbone of any good unit previously) and 2. How effective can these different domains communicate and operate as one on the battlefield(which will likely include not only communicating between domains, but between the different branches too)? Also as aside question...what is the most effective role for our special forces in this kind of theater of war? It doesnt seem like the GWoT role of conducting raids non stop, going after HVTs and setting up FoBs, or working with indig is going to be something that would be viable to do with near peer adversaries. Of course theyll be tasked with more difficult/danger missions, but this kind of war plan seems like it will almost definitely see SOF in a lesser, and different role than before.

Not true, there is a reason they developed the new ammo type. Also don't forget, there are two variants of the new ammo, steel jacketed and the hybrid ammo (it's the hybrid ammo that's really different). This round carries more energy for penetration, while maintaining ballistic accuracy like the 5.56 loads. Yes it's larger but that's the point, while not being a monster of a gun like larger, heavy caliber round guns that exist now. In addition to the new round, it's the new gun itself and it's optics platform which may be even more important. Those two together is what really optimizes the new rounds. Combination of light weight plus advanced optics is what will maximize the round's potential. It looks like the army is getting a good offering, finally, given all the previous "it's good but not really better" prototype guns which came and went.

Весь так называемый "доблестный" альянс НАТО убегал из Афганистана сверкая пятками, оставив все свои базы, вооружение и бросив союзников на произвол судьбы. Наивно полагать, что Афганистан не был завоёван. Список стран, которые якобы "не смогли" его захватить насчитывает 27. Из них большинство, о которых ты даже не слышал. Потом ты открываешь список империй, которые исчезли в результате нападения на Россию. Это были САМЫЕ МОЩНЫЕ ИМПЕРИИ В МИРЕ в своё время. Все они нашли в России то что искали - землю, примерно 2Х2 метра для каждого. Ну а если ты так веришь в то, что Афганистан - кладбище империй, то я ещё раз напоминаю, что последними были США и их сателлиты.

I respectively disagree with your comments about the M-14 battle rifle being a failure. That said, the M-14 was not all things to everyone's desires. It was not a BAR clone, it was not a SAW, and it could not be. Case in point, close combat narratives frequently state that enemy combatants were often hit with the 5.56 round yet recovered and continued the assault. While many studies will definitively state that bullet placement is a more telling factor in lethality than bullet size, the simple fact that penetration, wound path and exit wounds are a significant deterrent to continued viability of the enemy combatant. The 7.62 rounds are more often lethal (placement being equal) and the 5.56 round struggles to put the enemy down with one shot. Yes, the M-14 was (is) a big, heavy beast, a direct descendent of the M-1 Garand of WW II fame. The thing that made the M-1 Garand popular was often that the one soldier in 10 that actually shot at the enemy, was that the said shooter could actually shoot and not "pray and spray" like some combatants are portraited in the movies. Add to this, the fact that smaller bullets allow more to be carried, but I submit that their availability simply allows them to be wasted faster than single aimed shots by a marksman. Please do not argue with me about hypervelocity smaller bullets and shock value. Yes, it does happen, and it affects the targeted individual, but they frequently recover and get back into the fight. So, you shoot them again in their now frequently worn body armor and smaller bullets just cannot penetrate as well as larger bullet with the greater foot-pounds of force behind it. Please remember that the M-16 was first purchased by the Air Force to reduce guard fatigue from carrying a full-size battle rifle while standing post on flight RED line. Both rounds can be effective if the Army would pay everyone to be an expert marksman and allow them to practice on their own time. We used to do this a hundred years ago and we have more tools to prevent those who wish to pencil whip their score cards. But that is another issue. Many thanks, sorry for the rant.

Russia is adding more Iskander to their units, FAP 250-3000 on the drones, so they are adopting it, they didn't have this technological problem from 1945. The USA only had their doctrine agents the counties that didn't have big technological infrastructure. The last one was Yugoslavia, and after that war, they needed to retire the F117, because the technology was compromised.
