How to 3D Print VINTAGE fishing Lures or ANYTHING | Heddon Tiny Tad

When my dad was at my house over the holiday season he gave me a classic fishing lure, the Heddon Tiny Tad. He told me they don’t make these anymore and wondered if it was something I could 3D print. Without thinking twice I said yes, I thought it would be a 10 minute job. That 10 minute job turned into a drawing out project but in the end I learned some things and ended up with a lure that looks and performs like the original.

@@VinayVarsani I completely overlooked that he had the original. Might be better not to have the metal loops of the original in the mold but he could 100% forgo the 3D printing step.

@@VinayVarsani Yeah, I feel like this is one of those "when all you have is a hammer, everything looks like a nail" type situations. Like, "I have a 3D printer. I can definitely print a fishing lure" and you never stop and think if that's the most effective way. Either way, though, this turned out pretty good

One thing I like to do when I am putting 3d printed half together is to make some 1.8mm holes in both sides in the drawing and then use lengths of 1.75mm filament bits as the pegs for the holes. It really helps get stuff to line up.

The action is determined by the way the bill directs water. It looks like the geometry is slightly off versus the original. Maybe widen the bill and thicken up the taper underneath it, and you should be solid. I look forward to trying out this 3d mesh software to see if I can recreate blanks of some of my lures, so I can custom paint them without losing the ones I already have

The fan showdown is a lot of fun, but this right here is the meat and potatoes of why I got a 3D printer -- printing things that no longer exist, or do exist but not in the configuration that I need/want, or something that doesn't exist but should. Great job recreating the lure, especially for a first try!

I don't think PLA is going to be a problem. I made a new dome shaped cover to one light i broke in a crane. Printed it with transparent PLA and it's going strong for five years now. It lives in the elements, it's gotten plenty of sun exposure, it's eaten metric tons o road salt, it's been in +30 and -30.

I agree. PLA is much better material than many people think. I have made multiple lures with PLA and they work perfectly. I even installed the hook holders with just epoxy (no "through hull" like in this video) and none have failed so far). PETG is not good material in this application, as it's really difficult to paint.

Well like you mentioned with the paint, maybe airbrush another one without the sparkles, but maybe layer with that with bright blues and pinks add your dots, one lure that pops out to me are the rainbow trout color schemes on many spoons and spinner lures. I just picked up the Elegoo Mars 3 resin 3D printer that just came out. It is the same size as the Mars 2 but with a 4K LCD. This thing rocks. The print quality is crazy good. Mostly I am printing Warhammer models, but also HO scale train bodies, D&D miniatures, and likely as my grand daughter gets older, figurines or furniture for the old doll house. I had 2 days of mostly screw-ups and 3 days of near perfect prints. Now these re not big... and not fast as a fan would need to be tipped up and would likely take10 hours to print, but they are smooth. I get none of the print lines you get with filament printing. The Investment up front was no bad. I got the printer, the wash/cure station, 2 1000g bottles of resin, 6 bottles of 91% IPA, a plastic jug with a basket to pre-wash the models, some plastic putty knives, a 6 pack of paper towel, a 50 pack of gloves, 3 craft trays, and a 1" paint brush (for cleanup). Total was bout $650. I got about $240 in models printed out of the first bottle, so this printer is going to pay for itself FAST.

I would think PLA will be just fine, it doesn't degrade much in water anyway, the stress is being carried by the wire "backbone" and the nail varnish coating will protect it - its quite waterproof. Maybe PETG might be an idea for future experiments. Its been many years since I fished with a lure, but I recall being told the main thing is the size, motion and patterns moving about, fish are instinctive and won't care too much about the quality of the finish :) And of course, now you have the pattern you can make several for your Dad with all kinds of finishes! This is a great video re: Meshroom, I haven't heard about it before, I might make some kind of turntable and see if I can use it to scan something. I have zero skill with mesh editing but I guess this would be a learning opportunity.....

I think if you made one and then made a mold and casted it it would be better for making a bunch... But since you have multiple 3D printers, an even more interesting method might be directly printing the mold, and then sealing it with a gasket that was printed in a more malleable/rubbery filament. Then you could just cast it.

Probably could have saved you a minute if you created a cast of the original , added the metal parts and rotocasted the lure. you could make a bunch pretty quick doing it that way too. It would be airtight right out of the cast just requiring a lick of paint for looks. Has the added bonus of adding to your skill set and options for content! I mean, you could always print a cast and do it that way... each to their own I guess.
