My attitude towards math and grades went from, “i hate it,” and getting f’s and d’s to wanting to pursue it in uni and A’s. It was a very quick change and all it took was focusing on the how and why of the math. That simple change in perspective truly changed my whole experience with the subject.

two years late but schools just teach whatever the concept it without delving into the history, what could be the possible real-life applications, etc. math is truly a fascinating and pristine concept and idea that is blurred with the poor teaching at school. other educational systems do math justice though.

I've got a few questions: 1) What are your thoughts on incorporating maths practise into your permanent daily study? Is this something that you did personally? 2) What resources did you use to learn the concepts? 3) Did you teach yourself or learn in-line with what you were being taught at school? (I.e. did you learn in advance at home)
@ArcherNewton3 жыл бұрын
Hi Dhruv! Lots of likes on this one! 1) Up to you, this can help spaced repetition. I personally didn't do maths as daily study because it wasn't necessary. As long as you repeat concepts just before forgetting them (whether that be in 1 week, 3 weeks, 1 month), this is all good. 2) Generally resources shouldn't be a limitation for your success. All I had used was my class textbook, its worked solutions for learning the basics of the concepts and the exam study guide for applying my knowledge with practice questions. To help with my inquiry based learning and developing a deeper understanding of the content and how they all interrelate, I used maths stackexchange, 3blue1brown, khanacademy and any other random sites that came up when I'd google a conceptual question I had about a particular topic. 3) I basically went to my maths classes only when I had tests/exams. My attendance at school itself was quite low because I was university during my other subjects. So the majority of my learning was self-regulated learning. I was rarely ahead of class though because you'll just end up going the same pace as them anyway. I'll be explaining this in one of my upcoming videos on how to maximise these holidays. Hope that helps! Please let me know any other questions you have!

Hey Archer! Thanks a lot for this, I’ve been good at math through subconsciously applying the processes you mentioned while answering but now we’re taught to spam practice questions and it just doesn’t fit with me at all. I just really needed to hear this as I sort of have forgotten how I used to study and I probably didn’t quite exactly know what I did right as well. This video is much appreciated.

Also, sometimes I feel like when I’m approaching a problem where I have to apply my skills, my mind just goes blank and I can’t seem to be able to solve the problem? Also, the rare times that I do get the difficult concept, I check my solution and realise I’ve used a long method whilst someone else has solved in lesser steps.

But why is that if we know this concept to an extend, we are still unable to comprehend these curveball types of questions, where have we gone wrong about the assumption of our own knowledge?
@ArcherNewton3 жыл бұрын
Hi there, you mentioned it in your question aha. The assumption that you understood the concept to enough of a extent. If that question lies in your exam and is set by the exam board, they expect you to understand it to a certain extent, and all this really means is that you hadn't realised that extent and were not at that extent just yet. Hope that helps! Please let me know any other questions you have!

Hey Archer, when you said don’t repeat practice questions unless reviewing questions you got wrong and doing timed and untimed practice exams, did you mean doing practice exams untimed for some of the past papers for HSC Maths and then timing yourself on the other ones once your more comfortable with the concepts? Also could you explain more about the conceptual learning as in give an example of how you did that and how to formulate our own questions once we run out of practice questions?

I could use some advice😅I’ve just moved to Australia and I’m starting the hsc content for the first time (just started year 12). I’m taking ext 1 maths but I haven’t covered a large percentage of the content (back from yr 11) and even a lot of the topics in advanced maths. I’m struggling now and looking into tutoring but I was wondering if you had any advice for actually learning these topics in the short time I have, paired with revising. Are there any websites or KZbin channels you could recommend to learn the topics? Great video thanks💖

When you got somewhat newer version of the study technique you are using,it kind of creates Friction for the previous more natural technique. For better results you push hard but it somewhere doesn't work ,is there some process to decide how much change to be Integrated in one go.. or you just depend on the instinct? .. need your insights

Used to be able to say I have never gotten below an A… until yesterday when I got a c+ on a specialist test. I really enjoy the subject, but clearly it is not my strong point so I’m debating dropping it so my ATAR is strong. It was the first test of the year, but it has really thrown me off kilter, as I have always been really good at maths and top in the year. If you were in my position, would you drop the subject and pick maybe biology up? At my school we can only do 5 subjects, and I’m currently doing Methods, Chemistry, Physics, English and Specialist.
@ArcherNewton2 жыл бұрын
Hi Chloe, sorry to hear that it didn’t go well. As we head up the years, the style of questions fundamentally change, especially within maths. If I were your position, I’d ask myself if I see myself doing maths in the future years, picking it back up and becoming a top student in Maths. It really depends if you can see yourself doing that. If we don’t think we can bring that back up, then you can remove it. Depending on what year level in can change things but overall, when optimising for the highest ATAR, only choose the subjects where you believe you get a very high score.

Heyyy so I just had some questions, I’m in year ten right now but subject selection for next year is coming up soon and I want to get into Med. The only prerequisites are chemistry, however ANY of the maths is desirable. So far I chose methods, chem, human bio, english . I still need a fifth subject . Maths isn’t necessarily my strong point but it isn’t my weak point either. Specialist Maths scales really well but it is difficult…. Same with physics. Which one do you think I should pick? Or instead of human bio should i do physics and take specialist as well? Hope that made sense… Thankyouuuuu
@ArcherNewton3 жыл бұрын
Hi there! In general, you should choose the subjects that you think you can achieve higher in. Maybe also look at the assessment types - whether there's an exam, written assignments, tests, oral presentations, etc. - and how well those play to your strengths too. Hope that helps :)
