Great explanation on carb metering circuits. I didn't really know but I knew that the jet needle must control the main, but did not understand completely. Why does the pilot jet stop pulling fuel at mid carb valve openings? Thanks.
@thejunkman5 жыл бұрын
Good question and observation. The reason the pilot stops contributing fuel at half throttle and above is becuase the vaccum created through the carb is lower and the extra fuel being pulled through the main jet drops the fuel level in the bowl just enough that the pickup on the pilot jet is not submerged so it can't draw any fuel. Its a delicate balance going on that is why certain adjustments overlap a little. Check my website for more detail and visuals.

Very useful information. I have to make some carb tuning on a 125 two stroke after I derestricted it so it doesn run lean. Some say I have to change the throttle slide too if I go richer on the idle and main jets. The slide is kinda pricey(about $60) here in Eastern EU. Right now it's 40 and I maybe have to buy a size 30. Do you think it's necessary? The carb is Dellorto phbh28 right now the idle jet is 50 and I will go maybe 52. Main jet is 132, maybe I will go 138 or 142 at max.
@klrmoto5 жыл бұрын
How do you verify the pilot jet pathways are clear? That is a great carburetor diagram!
@thejunkman5 жыл бұрын
Usually by spraying some aerosol cleaner through the pilot jet and making sure it comes out the tiny hole in the throat of the carburetor.
@klrmoto5 жыл бұрын
Ok. I did that with success. Thank you! I sprayed B-12 (it is mostly acetone) from the air side in and let it run out the little hole in the throat ( I had the needle valve in without the spring/washer/o-ring so it would run out the throat holding the carb upside down). I did that a good number of times to make sure it was clear. I used alcohol to clean out the acetone and compressed air to dry it all out.
@klrmoto5 жыл бұрын
Part of the air/fuel circuit for the pilot jet was drilled and plugged with a small brass fitting. Have you ever removed one of those plugs then re-install another plug after cleaning?
@thejunkman5 жыл бұрын
Those plugs are not meant to be removed. They are there to plug a passage used when the carburetor body is cast/made. They are known as welch plugs.
@hugofelp7 жыл бұрын
Fantastic explanation! Thank you
@sidecarbod14415 жыл бұрын
Quite a good explanation of how a carb works but just as the throttle is cracked open the pilot circuit feed the transition circuit as well as the hole that delivers fuel at idle. Also at idle not all of the air the that engine requires is delivered via the pilot circuit, air still flows down the main venture, the air the flows down the pilot circuit is really just to create a vacuum above the pilot jet so that it delivers fuel. The air flowing under the slide down the venturi is then mixed with the fuel that the pilot circuit is providing. The main fuel circuit as air fed into it in order to help atomize the fuel and tailor the fuel curve.

@thejunkman2 жыл бұрын
Link in the description and on my website.
@Blockbuster20333 жыл бұрын
Very good video! I do however have questions, just to clarify: The idle air screw is affecting the mixture when the slide is all the way closed?! So when you open the slide by a very small amount it is basically the pilot jet and the idle air screw that effect the mixture?! The pilot jet and idle air screw effect the mixture at all slide openings, but it's effect becomes extremely small at larger slide openings?! Or does the "vacuum leak" in the idle circuit by opening the slide make the idle circuit stop working? The main jet size also effects the region where the needle is mainly metering the fuel, but not very much?! Also: Some carbs seem to have an additional jet on the top for full throttle enrichment.
@thejunkman3 жыл бұрын
Generally you are correct in your thinking, but here is the deal. The idle mixture screw, has a negligible effect after the slide begins to open as the pressure drop makes the air passage (in the case of an air screw) more or less irrelevant because the air or pressure drop is going to happen in the venturi and not the air passage. In the case of a fuel screw, the pilot and then main jet are sucking the fuel down below where the pickup for the fuel passage is so it basically stops working as well after the slide begins to move up. I hope I am answering the question you are asking.
@Blockbuster20333 жыл бұрын

@thejunkman5 жыл бұрын
A carburetor functions the same way regardless of two or four stroke so this video applies because the carburetor doesn't know what type of engine is doing the suckingof air through it.

Hey Junkman- I'm pretty sure you answered the question that led me here, but let me be precise- I have Mikuni VM34 carbs on an XS650. These are actually 2 stroke carbs so they have an air screw ahead of the slide. My question is how much of the throttle travel is that air/fuel ratio screw really effecting? I am recently thinking that it is only idle, but it seems to be the first 1/3 of throttle.
@thejunkman5 жыл бұрын
It has a very nominal effect above 1/8th throttle as that is where your pilot and main jet are working in concert, just like my animations are trying to convey. I also have an idle mixture video you should watch that talks about that mixture setting alone.
@kolilagephart37665 жыл бұрын
It should be added that al parts of the carb can effect tuning .Different pilot jet sizes , needles with different taper profiles, slides with different cut-aways and main jets are all available . It kept running, although not very well. It is now at about 2.25 turns out and runs great. My question is, does it really matter that it didn't die when closed, since no bike ever runs like that. If there was any damage to the seat, so what, since it is at an appropriate setting? That's the real question I have. All I ever heard is if the seat is damaged then you have to get a whole new carb. Stages are levels of modifications. The modifications you describe are "stage 1" meaning you aren't doing anything to the internals or swapping any major parts, like adding a "pumper" style carb. Stage 3 would be if you installed a BBK and different camshafts. In your case you might just need to richen up the overall mixture a little.

You are possibly too lean on the main jet or rhe needle position. Watch the video again and focus on those. Also I have other videos that break it down a little more. It takes testing one thing at a time. kzbin.info/www/bejne/lZireWeLi8eefKM

How do you know what size carb to use?

Super Cool Video !!!

Out here, in INdia, people and mechanics actually think that messing with the air screw will somehow affect the fuel economy !! They have no idea of this.

If I lower the pilot jet into the bowl a little more, would that resolve the sputtering when I roll off the throttle?
@thejunkman5 жыл бұрын
That is not possible. The jets have a fixed position. You could raise the float height, but the solution might be to richen the pilot jet to the next size.

What is the difference of ASV(air sunction valve) and ACV(air cut of valve) function in carburetor? please reply
@thejunkman3 жыл бұрын
These are not a function of the carburetor. These are used for emissions purposes of an ASV to inject fresh air into the exhaust to complete the combustion/conversion process of the carbon monoxide. ACV is used in the same way but to reduce the popping on deacceleration by completing the combustion.

I've heard from someone that you should do the carb jetting when you change the exhaust on your motorcycle, may have something to do with the air flow. Is it really a "must do"? Might be a really self-explanatory question but, as you can probably tell, I don't have that much experience with motorcycles If anybody could help me with that, I would be very grateful

With an aftermarket exhaust you allow more air to escape. This leaves room for more air coming in. You should get an aftermarket intake and re jet it. Your gonna need more fuel not less.

If you do so you will increase the power and longevity of your engine.

I have a two barrel Weber carburetor that is having a problem in my car. When I do a cold start with my car it seems like it takes off like a rocket. But after it warms up, and drive it around for a little it, the idling goes back to normal. When I open up the air cover when it's dead cold the motor, the jets are wide open. I mean really open all the way. When I try to touch them. they don't even move. What do you think I should do now? I have a rebuilt carburetor in my pad, but would like an opinion on what you think.

Dose the throttle shaft have play in it? This can ne a source of a vacuum leak.
