“Tell me about yourself.”
This is the NUMBER ONE most common opening question in an interview!! If you aren’t prepared to answer this question, your entire interview will be in jeopardy.
I’ve been in many MANY interviews, as both the interviewer and the person being interviewed, and I can say this is how every single one of my interviews began. Your answer to this question will make or break your interview.
If you are unsure about how to answer this question, you’ve come to the right spot! In this video, I share with you several tips on how you can successfully answer this question during your next interview.

You completely changed my interview game with this video. Anyone else coming here so last minute interview help this video has great tips. The present, past, future format really helped me highlight my relevant skills for the role I was applying for. Since my current role is unrelated I was able to gloss over it by saying, " My current role is in 'industry' but with my past experience doing a, b, c I think I would be a good fit for this role. The interviewer seemed very impressed with my opener and after I was done said I had answered her next question. It also makes sense to practice the answer to question so it flows naturally because you are going to be asked this question in some form at ever interview. I'm sad I just stumbled on your videos but there is a right time for everything. I did get the new job and I feel like it was due to having such a strong opener.

Your advice is very spot on, thanks for that! From my experience, the whole interview game seems to be all about how good a candidate could be at acting. Oftentimes, employers forget that they are also the ones who should put some kind of effort to win good candidates and get them interested in the company without making basic statements listing cookies and vacation days as extra perks.

I have a teaching interview tomorrow. "One of the major reasons I am a teacher today is because I am a slow learner, many times slow learners are regarded or seen as stupid people. I love teaching because being able to help low achieving students fulfils my heart. My reward accelerates when that one learner who never gets anything right finally gets the concept" Does that personal information make look bad?

I hope your interview went well! I don't think this makes you look bad - though I wouldn't share it in your answer to "tell me about yourself," but more a question about why you want to be a teacher or work in schools.

The timing of these interview coaching techniques is perfect in my situation, where after 34 straight years of continuous service at three major corporations, where I did little serious interviewing, I was somewhat insecure about a recent job elimination and foggy where this lands. I strolled through your thoughtful and logical guidance with interest which has built my confidence so I actually pace myself, look forward to interviews, connect and be genuine and sincere. I think this was one of the best things that could have happened for a much needed change of scenery. Thanks again.

GREAT question! My best tip would be to watch this video on the formula for behavior-based interview questions: kzbin.info/www/bejne/p3emqKeJdpesa7c What you'll want to do is think about a time when you did those exact things in your questions (worked on a team, managed ideas from multiple people, used technology to solve a problem, and how you solved a problem in general) and use the formula (my preference is CAR) to craft your response. I've also got other behavior-based interview questions you can think about on my website here: lwbalance.com/2020/06/06/free-list-of-52-behavior-based-interview-questions/ I hope this helps! THANK YOU for being a new subscriber!!

As far as the “what are you doing now” portion, should you include a personal detail if it is the reason why you are currently unemployed? (ie, I took a break from working to care for my husband when his health suddenly declined but he is recovered now and I’m able to get back to a career)

I have a lot of experience on both ends of the interview process and have learned so much from your videos which I just happened to come across now thank you. Excellent recommendations on the questions at the end of the interview one of the other ones that I ask is actually asking for the job if I want it that is what are your thoughts on that?
@LifeWorkBalance
@LifeWorkBalance 2 ай бұрын
Thanks for your comments! Are you asking my thoughts on asking the interviewer for the job, during the interview? If so, I wouldn't usually recommend doing this - it's clear you want the job because you are interviewing for it. What I would do instead is express my enthusiasm for the role and describe why I'm a great fit for it during the beginning of the interview (likely during my answer to "tell me about yourself") and at the end of the interview thank them for their time and reiterate my enthusiasm for the role.

@LifeWorkBalance
@LifeWorkBalance Жыл бұрын
I think it depends. If they're using this type of language, my warning bells go off automatically that there is gossip or drama involved and I may not want to be a part of that. However, if you really want this job, and you think it might be a good fit, then it's okay to address the "negative fishing" head on. If there's any truth to it, you can talk about what you've learned as a result.

Watching your videos has been interesting, learning things and ways i never even thought of. Now that being said, how do you answer the "Tell me about yourself" as it relates to the job you're applying for, when you have no experience, when no experience is required?
@LifeWorkBalance
@LifeWorkBalance Жыл бұрын
Focus on your transferrable skills (check out this video here: kzbin.info/www/bejne/aHOQhHSKfLtobqc) and still use the same formula. Your answer to the question may be on the shorter end if you have 0 experience, (the past part may be very quick, like, "I just graduated from XYZ") so you'll want to focus more on the future part of the formula. I hope this helps!
@GregNye-be3pm

I guess when I have been asked the question tell me about yourself I feel like it's so open-ended in so many ways you can answer, I kind of feel like they want to know a little bit about everything so I do start with and just touch on growing up in a close-knit family and still have those values but I move on quickly to education and then experience and I can do that in less than 90 seconds and I think they appreciate the fact that you touch a little bit on personal values and integrity based on growing up.. I think it shows that you have a solid foundation that you can bring and use in the organization What are your thoughts
@LifeWorkBalance
@LifeWorkBalance 2 ай бұрын
You could certainly share that information during your answer to "tell me about yourself!" I wouldn't give too many details about your family, but I do think if it's relevant to the job and you think it will help you connect with the interviewer, you can go for it.

Good question - and I can appreciate your feelings about how to approach this. In the US, this type of conversation should not come up because it could lead to possible discrimination. If you are interviewing for a job in a different country where it is appropriate to disclose this information then I think it is appropriate to be honest about why you left!

Im definitely guilty of verbalizing my resume and always hate this question, oh no! It seems like this is almost similar to what you'd put in a cover letter, about how previous experience relates directly to things from the job posting?
@LifeWorkBalance
@LifeWorkBalance Жыл бұрын
Somewhat - though you want your cover letter to tell a story about how you are a good fit for the overall position, where as your answer to this question (tell me about yourself) is more of "tell me (quickly) about how your previous experience and future goals relate to this position and why you're a good fit." A cover letter probably couldn't be condensed into 90 seconds!

how do i approach this when my highlights are already on my resume? i worked hard to make sure my resume encompasses the best of my career, so i'm at a loss at to what else i'd add say other than stuff that's already on my resume for this specific question.
@LifeWorkBalance
@LifeWorkBalance 7 ай бұрын
Yeah, you don’t want to reiterate the same stuff on your resume. However, your resume likely isn’t in story format, whereas your answer to this question is more of a story to explain why you’re here and why you’re a good fit for this position.

If you've worked before, you can use the formula I've shared in this video! Present, past, future. Past is where you focus on your previous experience.

What do you do if you don't have much experience?
@LifeWorkBalance
@LifeWorkBalance Жыл бұрын
It depends! You'll likely want to focus on your transferrable skills from your past & present - while you may not have much professional PAID experience (e.g. a job) you may have experience with school, group projects, etc. You can pull on that experience, even if it isn't paid work experience.

In my experience this question always comes at the end of the interview and they do not want to know anything work related about you. They are looking to find out what type of person you truly are.

There has to be some way for an organization/hiring manager to make a decision on who is the best qualified and best fit for a job. The only way to truly do this is via interviews. It's impossible to give everyone a chance, because 1 job opening might have hundreds of applicants. It's up to us to represent ourselves in the most effective way possible during an interview to make the best impression!

Lynling I agree the interview process makes my skin crawl‼️However as said, it's the only process we have though in my line of work there are also practical demonstrations ( I'm in western med, skills matter,) which are nerve racking as well. We buck up and deal as conquering this essential process shows our best in problem solving, foraging forward with the workable solution while managing my own baggage in the process‼️😎

I was taught from a legal perspective that the question, "Tell Me About Yourself" could open you up to some legal issues. The variants you mention perhaps not so much however, "Tell Me About Yourself" could be answered in a way like, "I'm a gay catholic and I don't like white people", which probably could be followed up with, "When do I start?" Or is "Tell Me About Yourself" safe?
@LifeWorkBalance
@LifeWorkBalance Жыл бұрын
Tell me about yourself is a perfectly legal question to ask (and answer) during an interview. However, the way candidates answer this question (like you mentioned) could open up the possibility of discrimination. It's important to answer this question in a very thoughtful, intentional way so we don't subject ourselves to that possible discrimination. I wouldn't want to say my age, or my marital status in this answer, nor would I want to include information about my religious or political affiliations.
