Interview Question: What are your Weaknesses? 3 EXAMPLE ANSWERS!

“Tell me about your weaknesses.” “What is/are your greatest weakness(es)?” This question, while terrible, is one you can likely expect during your next interview. Regardless of my feelings about this question, interviewers love to ask it, so you need to be prepared to answer it!

Went back to school and became a medical assistant. Now, I'm back taking classes to get my nursing license. These interview tips help for sure! I've been with the same doctors for 16 years (part-time now), so I can take my classes and work temporarily for other clinics or hospitals and gain more experience. I came across your channel knowing that I need to improve my interviewing skills. My last two interviews, the companies really liked me, and brought me in for a second and third interview. The problem was I didn't give them enough about me for them to pick me. I didn't tell the complete story. For example the part in the video where you are talking about the CAR and the lacking confidence that is all me and I should be able to tell my story better. BTW currently at a job that I really don't like. Thank you!!!

Really practical content 100%, and quite well-expressed, throughout. When the listener starts taking notes for action, that's the key sign that the advisories are truly top-tier. And is going to be just as practical into the future ! THANKS ! If your list "summaries" can be posted--even "lo-tech" such as on posterboards, the viewer can pause to review even better, visually. This is actually a great weakness to share. I would recommend rephrasing it to something like: One of my weaknesses is I really care about what other people think about me. I'm not necessarily working to reverse this and *not* care what they think about me, but I am working on making choices personally and professionally that serve both myself and other people, rather than just doing things because I want others to think highly of me. I've found that only focusing on what others think and want ends up burning me out, so I I've started to be more intentional about what I commit to. While it has been hard to learn to say "no" and create boundaries effectively, it has ended up serving me and my relationships well! This doesn't necessarily touch on being "vain" and how you physically present to others, but I think it could be looped into this statement! What do you think?

Great question! When I am conducting "real" interviews, I try not to ask this question. Instead, I ask something like, "What is something you are working to improve?" However, during mock interviews, I DO ask this question because it is still a very common question that is asked by other interviewers.

I'd recommend explaining how it has hindered you in the past and what you've done to improve your response to situations that could cause stress and pressure, and how you've learned/grown from that. For example: Maybe you notice you start to feel a certain way, or your desk looks more messy when you begin to feel stressed and under pressure, so you read a book on the topic and learned some skills for yourself as well as skills that you implement with your manager/supervisor to better understand priorities etc. How have those new skills helped you/what did you learn/etc.

I was released from my 30+ year job due to the hospital being closed down. I was about about 9 years away from retirement. I was afforded the opportunity to take some time off for myself. I'm feeling very drawn to get back to my field of work and have submitted an application. I'm not confident that my resume was professional enough. I don't know how to respond to the interview question about why I took almost 2 years off to take care of personal issues and home repairs. What do I say? I've tried many times to think about an answer, how to put it, having no success. The point is, I have worked as a project manager having multidisciplinary teams and because of that we sometimes had delays and tasks were not delivered as good as possible. I have difficulty to understand how people can deliver whatever thing they have done, or to put I expect much more. Good question. If you've received feedback that you have high standards, are strict, and demand a lot from your colleagues, what have you done to improve or work to improve that? You might say something like, "I've been told by previous managers that my high standard of work can cause stress and anxiety among my team members. After I was given that feedback I started recognizing the nonverbal body language of my colleagues to clue me in if I was coming on too strong, or had too high of expectations. I started dialing it back. I understand that I am in control of myself and the work that I do, but I cannot control others. If it is important to me that we submit work of a certain quality or standard, I get buy-in from my team early by talking to them first about our goals, and desired end results."

Not necessarily- we all likely have things we’re confident about, so I don’t think lack of confidence is a personality thing. However, employers likely don’t want to spend much of their time coaxing their employees into doing everything. Some hesitation about a job or task is normal, but if we make it sound like our employer will have to work hard to help us feel comfortable, safe, and confident, that can pull their time, energy, and attention from their own work and be too much of a burden.

Hmm...maybe you could record yourself and start to identify triggers or times when you engage in this behavior/activity so you can start to retrain yourself not to do it? If you are remote, maybe you can watch yourself in the camera and when you see yourself doing it, stop it? You could also try to get a fidget of some sort to try to keep your mind occupied on other things rather than this behavior. Let me know if any of these tips help!!

I have my very first interview for a nursing job tomorrow morning. It's with the same company I have worked for for 11 years now so I do have a strong understanding of the culture, but all my interviews with this org before have been for management positions. I don't know what a nursing interview looks like, even! It's open interviews and they know I and many of us are brand-new nurses straight out of school, so they are not expecting us to have loads of in-depth knowledge of the work. My question is, how do I name a weakness and how I have been working on it when all my experience to date has been in another field? Seems like everything is going to be irrelevant. Thanks!

I know I am a little late, as you've likely already interviewed (by the way, how did it go?). There are a few ways you could handle this - you could mention something very technical (in this case, nursing specific), or you could mention something a little more "soft-skills" oriented (time management, people skills, organization, etc.). Either way, you will want to make sure you aren't mentioning a weakness in an area that is required to be successful in this position. While I didn't give you a specific example of what to do, I hope this still helps!

@@LifeWorkBalance I ended the interview after the next obnoxious remark from them. I said, thanks for your time but I don't see this interview bringing about a mutually benefitting result. It is really something that some interviewers here in the UK still believe and act as if they should be able to put an interviewee to the sword, make them jump through so many hoops for what is low to mid-level appointments. The thing is they wouldn't dare do that when interviewing for high level appointments. I finally realized why hiring teams make horrible selections. The interview training materials have turned the interview process into a game for liars. The interview team is trying to make up questions to eliminate the qualified candidates that are telling the truth. This video is horrible advice but does touch on a real problem. Training materials like these are causing interviewers to over think everything. Keep it simple.

I’m sorry to hear you think this is horrible advice, and it sounds like you’ve had some bad experiences interviewing. I would hope people interviewing aren’t liars, because that’s bound to show up in other ways too. I’d like to think that people who watch this video and other interview prep videos, are gathering data and are doing what they can to be most prepared for an important meeting/event. Employers will likely expect this from their employees when the employee is leading or hosting a meeting/project/etc., so winging it and lying doesn’t set anyone up for success. What advice would you provide instead?

Dear advisers, are you ever ashamed of yourself? You really have no issue with turning the "hiring game" into an act of total deceiving? How can you even use the word "authentic" when you support an interviewing system that fosters no drop of authenticity?

It sounds like you've had a really bad interviewing experience in the past! I hope your next interviews allow you to be authentic AND the interviewers to be authentic! It will certainly make the interview experience (and if you get the job, the job experience) much more enjoyable!

@@LifeWorkBalance I mean no disrespect. I just see the reality of interviewing for what it is: a game of pretending something we are not. I have a successful career, by the way, and luckily, most of my interviewers did not ask the question and more important, did not expect the answer you suggest. Again, I mean no disrespect. Everybody out there, in your branch, gives similar advices so please don't take it personally. I really think the world would be a better place if people stopped acting, deceiving and pretending to be what they are not.

If you went on a date for instance, would you like your partner to be prepped in advance about how to talk to you and what answers to provide to certain questions or you would rather like him to be as genuine as possible?

Ideally people don't just parrot what I say - this is exactly why I am hesitant to share example answers! You're right, if they parrot then they likely will not be successful in the actual job.

Thanks for taking them time to reply. I am starting a new role as I approach 55 years old and that is after 8 months out due to ill health and exhaustion. My new employer values older people now, this is a major engineering consulting firm, why their change of heart? Basically because our industry is full of people that are in turn full of BS. You could say a whole generation playing the game of saying the correct words and identifying the proper way but god forbid they carry out the work they are paid to do. My frustrations are the result of having to “mentor” someone with zero experience except in telling you how to do something faster. What ends up happening is that you (the mentor) picks up the pieces and also the workload of the “parrot”. Aside from all that, I was very much out of touch with all these new words and their hidden message within the workplace. As “woke” comes to an end, which it is, I suspect many folks will find themselves unemployed and unemployable due to not learning what they should have. Kind Regards

@@hughbarr8408 Gosh I'm so sorry this has been your experience. I think employers are wise to value people from all of the various generations in the workplace. I might recommend the book Radical Candor by Kim Scott if you find yourself in a position where you feel you have to pick up all of the workload or pieces from someone with zero experience. Wow. I am not a good actor. Don't make it seem rehearsed. Oh... Here are some lines for you to rehearse for your interview! All 5 weaknesses that any person on earth can have. That's gonna make you stand out!... What a buncha BS. I don't want to work for such a company that requires a psychology degree just to pass an interview. Waste a year of my life just raining for the damn interview. Completely change my personality to a codependent, people pleaser type of person. I work too hard for all this BS!...... Oh yeah ...
