What are my key takeaways: A good question is a query seeking novel information towards a particular objective. It is better to: - start with genuine curiosity and a desire to learn - map out my knowledge to gain clarity of what I already know and where the boundaries of my knowledge are Check the conversation goal: is it altruistic/cooperative? - start with open-ended questions to build trust and rapport If the conversation goal tends toward narcissism/competition, ask more direct/closed-loop questions Other takeaways: - ask lesser sensitive questions before moving onto more sensitive ones - ask follow-up questions to gain deeper insights and understanding - reframe questions to approach a topic from a different angle - you can use reverse psychology (assuming the pessimistic side) to frame questions for more formulative responses - avoid asking leading/biased questions - avoid the interrogation experience by paying attention to the cadence and continuity of questions, be mindful of tonality and casualness (no rapid firing, keep follow-up questions and smooth transitions, keep casual) - give the person an out and freedom to change their answer anytime Diverse teams will require different communication styles/skills. We need practice and may need a communication coach.

Dr. Grace Lee, I'm a fan of your videos. There was an experience where I have given an uncomfortable situation to my supervisor simply because, "I don't trust that the person has my best interest". Instead of making him understand the impact of his actions towards me that makes me not trust him, I went straight telling him that I don't trust him and then proceeded mentioning the events. This has put us both on an awkward situation and I'm guilty of starting the conversation on the wrong foot. I should have watched my cadence, my tone, and should have focused more on altruistic questions to drive my point. That way, I could have discovered some of his answers and views about the events that I have a bad experience with and we could have worked towards a better outcome. Your videos helps me understand what I can still improve. You were able to articulate it very well. Thank you very much.

What resonated with me were the three tips for behaviors to watch for to avoid interrogation! And the big tip I had forgotten about is to give them an out!! At the beginning! As a coach and home visitor we have to ask many sensitive questions and offering an out is so important! Also, starting with the less sensitive question and moving toward the most sensitive. You have so much to offer Dr. Grace. Thank you for sharing your wisdom. And "questions are your answers". So true.

Many thanks to Dr. Grace Lee, very helpful. Good questions are to seek novel information towards specific objective. Knowledge is power, asking good questions demonstrates superpower 1.Approach with genuine curiosity Map out your knowledge, the more you know, the more you realize that you don’t know. When you know that you don’t know, you will develop your genuine curiosity. 2.Analyze the conversational goal (altruism to narcism) Start with least sensitive question: open questions, close questions, reverse psychology questions 3.Avoid interrogation experience: cadence/ rhythm, continuity/follow-up, casualness

For me, i say "umm.." while raising my hand slightly, or say a few words of the question and if interrupted, ill resect and be quiet to listen. This is good enough indication that you have a question and usually they will come back and ask, "hey, do you want to say something earlier?" works everytime for me.

Idk. I have doubt on this content being influential for someone likes me who hungry to learn and ask questions (late bloomer millennial gen worker here) See below: Every day when I go to my desk job I can’t comfortably ask any questions. It has to be the right kinds ie quality and productive for them to the experts DESPITE them saying “let me know if you have any question.” Well I do, a LOT and the fact that I kept getting unwanted unhelpful answers from them are hurting my confidence to succeed not at work but in life and I know this is the truth because I learned that these experts at work only want to hear quality productive questions. Not quick question, simple relevant question and such..like they don’t have time to help others grow these days (like they’re only looking out for themselves) and such casual simple informal questions of mine are a way for me to gain confidence in my knowledge skill abilities and characteristics. Overall. I’m not convinced that this video benefit anyone in my shoes.
