Boxed for 4 years - all the trainers did, was have us do light sparring, conditioning, heavy bag and some mitt practice. The 7 minutes of this video taught Me things My trainers, including a former IBO world champion (and a multiple world champion kickboxing trainer prior to that) failed to in 4 years time! This man has quite the insight. I wonder how his proteges are doing.
@ChronoTrigger125 жыл бұрын
You're not the only one, at our gym we only have a ring and a lot of old sturdy punching bags, we run, we shadowbox, we do some basic techniques with partners (all we do is 1 - 2, you punch and your partner defends) we hit the heavy bag and we spar. I have like a million holes in my guard, low fight iq, my movement and my footwork sucks, last time I got my ass handed in sparring by two guys. Right now I'm taking some notes and I'm trying to learn one thing at once.
@KerryDSC5 жыл бұрын
I have found in my experience the best trainers aren't world champions, or fighters with huge fight records(generally) many just have a natural eye and great understanding of movement and fundamentals. there is a gym owner I know who never really fought, but has produced 210 champions!!

One coach always bitched that ńbody had heart.. And once took us to a restuarant and left us alone at another table while he ate at the other end of the place with his family that was already there. We could have did that on our own. He acted as if he was doing us a favor. We paid our own meals. We had to wait 30 minutes in the van while he was stił inside. When we all sparred with him he was going all out and we were mostly ńvices. He was a real asshole.
@bernieweber46635 жыл бұрын
The reason I kept going was there was another pro there and a few good amateurs I could spar with and learn sometîng. The club closed when the aśshole coach hurt one of the students while spařing. A real pos.

Avoiding punches and punching back - the REAL ART!!!!!
@Kev80ification10 жыл бұрын
Great video, great help!
@reddestroyer980910 жыл бұрын
You can't just duck after jabbing... you may duck into an uppercut, same if you slip on either side. That's not what I would call planing for the worst because you're really just guessing. You have to be able to use your eyes in order to see what's coming and react accordingly. Additionally you have to be able to move/reset effectively after each exchange, you can't just stand there after slipping or ducking otherwise, you might get tagged anyway which is something you haven't shown. Also your head is not the only target the body is also, because of that you should avoid to much unnecessary movement since you will only present more openings. The "real" art of avoiding is much more complex. Not trying to be disrespectful but people watching this should know this because they're the ones who might end up using this in real situations.
@myboxingcoach10 жыл бұрын
Not sure what your pedigree is, in terms of either competing or coaching boxing, but surely if you are that insightful and experienced you would know that I cannot cover everything in one video - if you feel that can be done then that is simply a demonstration of ignorance. "May duck into this", "might get tagged" - I'd like to say you appear to be an enthusiastic amateur, but I'd probably only be half right. Not trying to be disrespectful or anything. :-)
@reddestroyer980910 жыл бұрын
Sure, obviously you can't cover everything in one video hence why I was elaborating on those moves so some viewers can have a better insight. For example like the jab and duck then jab move you have shown. If I jab then duck, unless I make an educated guess there's a very good chance I'll be eating an uppercut or heavy body shots. On top of that you have to worry about getting back in position, you can't just assume the opponent will back away after you finish with a jab. In fact he could just jump on you right after and beat you in the ground... you won't avoid all of his shots by standing in one place ducking and slipping, you would've to reset/reposition. That's something like I said you should have mentioned, you don't have to go into details to mention that. Anyway, my background? Although I do compete on a amateur level, competing or coaching doesn't necessarily mean you're knowledgeable. I've met a couple of coaches who train amateurs who, well don't really know much besides the basics... Passion is what counts, passion is what makes one a student of boxing. I've been passionate since I was 16 and have been analyzing defensive geniuses like George Benton and Pernell Whitaker... Like I said no disrespect, I respect all coaches and I don't mean to sound rude. If I wanted to be rude I could have said that your elbows were sticking out, but it's understandable since you're not a fighter and it's only a demonstration...
@myboxingcoach10 жыл бұрын
We need to agree to disagree. Passion is fine, but in my 37 years of boxing as a competitor and a coach I have seen plenty of passionate guys take repeated beatings. In fact, I've met very few people in all of those years in the sport who are not passionate. Passion gets boxers to the gym and out on the road. Sound skills, tactical awareness and a competitive streak a mile wide is what brings wins. By the way, I did represent my country as an amateur and have coached both international amateurs and a number of competing pros. I've also analysed videos. I must admit that I have found the former required more passion, commitment, structure and rigour than the latter.

Great advice coach, I also find it useful to combine head movement with footwork, like constantly pivoting after you dodge the shot to position yourself in a more advantageous angle out of the center line, that way your opponent can't throw a flurry and has to reset.

Agreed. A very well done tutorial on Slipping punches. Solid production values (Composition, Lighting & CLEAR sound - believe me, MOST fighting tutorials DON"T have all 3!) This is the most comprehensive tutorial I've yet seen on KZbin on this subject. The other sites will concentrate on only a single aspect; I.e., ONLY Jabbing, or ONLY Slipping, but never seen anything in all these years saying here's 5 DIFFERENT ways to move AFTER you jab!! . And it's true, so many fighters seem to get ko'ed a fraction of a second AFTER they throw their jab or Right. The same COULD happen to you - but if you follow Fran's advice, it'll be less likely to happen;

Thanks Fran Sands ! I sent the link to my eldest son to review & to teach to my 1st grandson who is 5 years old but is a good copycat of my martial arts moves. I told him I regret that I've never learned Western boxing, because at age 65 now, I've realized that it's a useful tool even when learning other martial arts styles. I've studied a little of Filipino Martial Arts, & I used to practice Korean Tang Soo Do, but what you've shown is not commonly practiced by us. Most of the champions I knew in the old days were boxers first before learning Karate & other arts. In fact I told my son to let my grandson learn boxing first before some other MA styles. I hope he can find a boxing gym near their residence in Manila.

Hey mate. I don't do personal coaching as such, I coach a team of boxers. In all honesty,. the quality of coaching in gyms from Liverpool through Warrington and Manchester is really solid. My videos will help, but enjoy your gym environment and maybe we'll meet on the circuit ;-)

Thank you, Mr.Sands! I did not have teachers when growing up, just trainers with a towel over their shoulders. I was a good fighter and athlete and always wanted to learn and i was smart enough to stop on time and not end up punch drunk like many of my friends. I could take a punch and hit right back,but…. unnecessarily? No.That's not me. I wish I had a teacher like you then. Love boxing and study it. I can tell, you really know what you are talking about. Keep it up! Thank you again...

Hi Fran! Greetings from Montreal. I just stumbled on to your vids over the weekend. Great stuff! I'm a fit 56, and just started boxing last Fall (to get FITTER). Maybe it's because we're closer in age or something, but I find your pointers and instructions crystal clear and easy to assimilate. As soon as I pay down my credit card a bit, I shall put in for some of your material. Cheers!

I wish we focused on this more in Muay Thai, especially in the West as we have greater upper body strength so punch more than Thais. I'll definitely be watching more of your videos and keeping them in mind while sparring - 90 minutes from now ;)
