What are some ways you personally would like to be an Indigenous ally?

As the executor of my parents' will, I would like to offer first right of refusal to the Chickasaw tribe, for sale of my parents' farmland, after they pass away (assuming they haven't already sold it by then). But that is something I will like to do if I can. The farm is on what was originally Chickasaw territory.

I would love to be because I have always felt a close relationship to nature when I learned about native american tribes and there views on nature and then the history of the land they took car of stripped away was one of the saddest things to me. I still cry. Ill never know what it truly feels like but i lived on the outskirts of town and have first had seen what urbanization does, it destroys. I havent seen a valley quail in over 20 years... its real sad. And all the forest fires. Its time we all become indigenous allys!!

Hi Mallory, Thank you for this video. I would like for people of European lineage to know that once they learn the truths our public school systems failed to teach us that it is important to stand up for the truth, not to stand idly by when someone who thinks they know something is verbally showing their ignorance. No matter how gently we correct people we think are our friends, a lot of them will isolate us because they choose to remain in their ignorance. Your world may become a little lonelier as a result but rest assured in the fact that people like that were never our friends to begin with. The really bad ones that aren't open to any rational conversation need to be given the silent treatment. Like the title of the album the AIM song is on, "Silence Is A Wheapon". Learn how and when to use it, also who and who not to use it on. So what if people we thought were our friends isolate us for speaking the truth. That just gives us the opportunity to learn more and to become better connected and more centered. By the way, a really good book that does a wonderful job of explaining the differences in the European and indigenous ways of thinking is, "Braiding Sweetgrass" (indigenous wisdom, scientific knowledge, and the teachings of plants) by Robin Wall Kimmerer. Happy journeys, Until next time my relatives

I have been studying (on my own) for about 6 months and I cannot believe what I did not know or thought was correct. Prior to this I became friends with an Indigenous person and enjoy sharing what I am learning so I know I am on-track - like a buddy system. I also came to a realization that I am living on Native land, not the reversal. I haven't shared this revelation with my friend yet, but will be interested in their comment. Your video on this topic confirmed a lot for me. I will also add that after making this friendship, I would never want to lose it. Tks so much!

Please speak up when you hear misinformation being stated as fact from a person who is not from that culture. It seems to happen alot in casual conversation. It is usually ignorant stereotypes. But please do so in a kind and supportive way. As to educate, and not simply be 'offended'. Also, be the one person who speaks up when you encounter disrespect for someone of a different race or culture. No matter the color of your skin. It is very powerful. I am of French Canadian and Native decent and this is very dear to me. ❤

I'd like to add that many non-natives (and even some culturally disconnected natives) refer to all Native American cultures as if they were all the same. "The indigenous culture" is actually many nations and cultures. Therefore as a West coast Modoc woman, I can't speak for other tribal cultures such as those in the Midwest or the east coast. I've had to change the way I speak to reflect this reality. We have many things in common across the continent, but it's good to speak of indigenous cultures in the plural rather than the singular. I cringe when I hear all indigenous cultures lumped together in the singular as if there were no difference between the Modoc and the Cherokee or Aleute.

Thinking about the phrase itself, cultural appropriation .. some things people do are clear, blatant forms of unacceptable cultural appropriation, such as wearing ceremonial regalia willy nilly in fashion or even worse making Halloween costumes out of it. On the other hand, here in the US our Constitution was in part inspired by the Haudosaunee (Iroquois) federation. Likewise, so was the early American suffragist movement. ↘️ The earliest European colonists survived because they accepted the agricultural teachings of indigenous people. Corn, beans, squash. The three sisters. I know this is not cultural appropriation but indigenous cultures have contributed much to the larger world. I think it is easy to be confused about this. One more thing: In my spiritual study, quests et al, I became concerned about the reverse influence of Christian teachings on our spiritual ways (to be clear, I am of European and Dakota descent). In the Native American Circle where I was involved for several years, we used Lakota ways. The brothers came from many different nations, so we focused on one for teachings and spiritual practices, always respecting the others. ↘️ I learned a lot from my deeply rooted brothers. As I learned song and prayer in Lakota, one thing that struck me was how sometimes some of our peoples sought kinship with the Christian newcomers by translating phrases to be like Christian concepts. The one that stood out for me was "Wakhán Thankhá" (or Wakán Tanka), translated as Great Spirit and said to be the "Indian" way of saying God or the Great Father. After study of old ways and consultation, it became clear to me that the elders way back spoke of "Le Wakhán kin." Period. The Holy or the Spirit. It wasn't a deity. It wasn't anthropomorphic. Sorry if this is too long. Your videos are inspirational and educational. They stimulate thought. I thank you for that.

Thank you. The deeper I look into the ways of the indigenous people the more I feel at home with a more gentile way of life. As Wight Crow49 talked about the great spirit, that reverberates with my spirit and my spiritual walk God, the Creator of all things. I see a great disservice done to all by the separation between us and it grieves me deeply.

I don’t consider myself a indigenous ally, because engaging in above mentalities and activities (honouring, respecting, learning, making connections and all that) is part of “what one is supposed to do to another human being” already, doing this for and to indigenous people is not unique to doing so to anyone else, what is unique in this situation is that indigenous people often have not receive the amount of solidarity that we are talking about here which indigenous peole do deserves, thus how I see it is that having this mentality and activity to and for indigenous people is good and right, but I don’t need to be called an “ally” to do that :)

Is it cultural appropriation if you don’t look like the original indigenous peoples of any land and then claim there heritage as yours by being married into the culture and being protected and able to practice someone else culture while they were killed for speaking their language or claiming their indigenous roots ?
@MalloryRoseCo
@MalloryRoseCo 2 жыл бұрын
Being married into the culture is one thing, and each tribe has different laws regarding that, but it's never a good idea to judge someone based on their skin colour either. Indigenous people come in all shades from light to dark.

@@MalloryRoseCo in America the original indigenous people were light brown to dark brown but not pale. I’m not judging because I know how it goes with having mixed heritage and I’m not saying you don’t have American aboriginal blood in you but it’s not because your ancestors were always here it’s because they came here and married the aboriginals that were already here. I know that south east and the plains Indian look different but I know that they are our people we’ve been mixing with them since they came here too. It’s no hate I’m just really trying to understand. I apologize if I came off rude in anyway I don’t want to make anyone feel less of what they are. I just have questions
