Practice practice practice! "How long does it take to NOT hate the janky way the back looks?" she asked, drying the angry tears on the back of the new quilt before going to inspect the perfection of her childhood quilt. THAT answered a LOT of questions. The quilt I had been holding my work up to all this time, HAS A COMPLETELY DIFFERENT EDGE FINISH!!!! My childhood quilt has the back folded around the edge and it is sewn on the front with a scant quarter inch top stitch on the quilt top side!!! Wow! I was today years old. Okay, I will stop crying now -- at least about this. I thought I knew how my old quilt was finished, only to realize I only remembered from touch! I never actually studied it!

Kristy Deen, "Binding is my nemesis" is my saying LOL watch the video's that she has on it. Go slow. Make the binding tool that she has and I promise you, it will help. I hated binding and because of that, I couldn't finish anything. Then I watched the videos. I made the tool. I watched the video on how to use the tool while binding and I paused and went very slowly and it really did work. Hang in there!!!

Could you do a video of single binding (1 1/2 - 1 1/4 inch) binding? For placemats and mug rugs I find the double binding a little too lumpy. And maybe the faux flange binding? and what about the "wrap-the-back-over-and-make-it-look-like-a-binding" binding? I know there are other youtube videos out there, but I think your instructional videos are probably the best! Clear, pedagogical and fun without fuzz or boring moments. Even funny :-)

Yay I am so happy that you addressed this subject! I have been given the fish eye by more than one quilting purist because I bind with my machine. My quilts are used daily and washed and used and loved. They hold up fantastically and I love the look of binding method three. Thank you Karen as always you show that there is more than one way to do things and that is okay! Love to the puppy. ❤️ stay safe everyone, love from Australia 🇦🇺

Thanks Karen for putting all 3 methods in one video. I’m left-handed and my hand stitching looks terrible. No matter how much practice, it has never gotten even a little bit better, so I never hand stitch the binding on or anything else that is going to be seen. I did it by machine long before I knew it was even ok to do it.....before KZbin! I learned quickly that it is way easier to sew the binding on the back and bring it around to the front. Stitching the binding on the front and folding it to the back and stitching in the ditch on the front....nope....too many places where the stitching missed the mark on the back. Yes, too challenging for this person even after many tries, so I just gave it up. So much less stress. I do think that maybe at this point by using wonder clips instead of pins maybe I might be more successful, but I’m not that unhappy with the fool-proof method of stitching it close to the binding edge on the front. Why stress? Love your videos. They are always so helpful. Thank you for sharing your skills with all of us out here just wanting to make the quilt we want to make! ❤️

I'm coming back to quilting after a couple of years' break. I am making a gift quilt and dreading the final step--binding. My walking foot has gone wonky, skipping many stitches. I'm in rural Mexico with no easy way to replace or fix it. So I had to do all my quilting with a regular foot, which produced no skipped stitches. So I'm going to be machine binding with many breaks for sanity! Thanks for this comprehensive and succinct tutorial on the methods that I can use.

I would love to be able to do it by machine though, hand binding is not my most favorite thing to do....it is one of my favorites....even though it is my nemesis....(not as much as it used to be thank goodness for your videos) just not my MOST favorite.....thank you again so much Karen!! I machine sew my bindings more often than handsewn. My favorite is the flange binding but have also used the method #2. I just wanted to tell you that you have inspired me to get 4 quilt tops done this past 10 days. Three are going to the long arm and the charity quilt will be done by me. They will ALL be machine bound. I was fed up with several fat quarter bundles and some "focus fabrics" taking up space in my sewing room for a few years. So I took your advice and just got them done! Better done than space-eaters, right? LOL Also used a pile of scraps for some new mug rugs which now are adding color to the living room. Thank you!

Karen, thank you for this video. I hate hand sewing! I’ve tried different ways to attach binding. My favorite is attaching to the front and roll to the back. I’ve learned to machine base my binding on the back first, making sure the binding overlaps my stitch line from my 1/4 seam which attached the binding to my quilt. Then stitch in the ditch on the front. Perfect every time.

I use method 3 with a decorative stitch. The wave is my favorite. It's a quick easy stitch and forgiving if you're sewing isn't perfectly straight. I shorten the wave and feed the edge of my binding down the center of my foot and let the wave fall on either side. That binding isn't going anywhere and it looks great.

After I sew binding to the top side , I iron the binding over flat to the back . Clips on each mitred corner & 2 clips I slide forward around as I sew. I match bobbin thread color to binding color & use invisible thread on top by stitching in the ditch ... perfection !

This is an excellent video. I have already watched it twice! I have been using method 3 but I’ll try method 1. Signed up for the 100 blocks in a 100 days. So much fun! Thank you Karen!

I use a decorative stitch called blanket stitch. It is exactly like the ones I learned by hand many years ago when doing stitchery pictures. Depending on thread you use it can look faint or thick. I use method 3 for this which I learned on you tube ten years ago while looking for a way to bind once arthritis made hand stitching impossible. Serpentine stitch is a fun, wavy one for kids. Thank you for the blog and especially the tutorials. I watch from Southern California every time the bell notifies me.

Good for you for "just getting it done" Karen! Binding is my favorite part. It means the quilt is almost done! I use method #3 on all my quilts. I use the triple stitch zig zag and generally do it in a contrasting but complementary color. I think of it as my personal signature.

Another great video! I do method #2 most of the time, but I like to make it difficult for myself so I use a 2” starting width for my binding. Ha! Just finished binding 5 quilts for charity over the last week, and it feels so good to “just get them done!” Thanks!

I know this video is a year old, but your videos have helped me so much. I decided to try quilting as a way to get rid of all our random fabric we've accumulated. I still need to do the binding, but I made my first quilt for my bed, really should have started smaller but I love it imperfections and all.

I see you have a Bernina. I love applying binding by machine. Bernina has a flat fell foot, that works perfectly to apply binding. You can use any width, but I usually cut my strips 2 1/4" wide, fold wrong sides together, use my walking foot to sew to the top of the quilt, in a 1/4" seam mitering my corners, then flip to the back, put on the flat fell foot, move the needle over 1 increment to the left, fold the binding over far enough to cover the bobbin thread, put the foot lever down and start stitching. The flat fell foot holds the binding perfectly aligned on the front and back, so the stitching rides along the fold on both sides. No clips or pins are needed at all. This foot is a life changer, if you machine sew your binding.🙂

Thank you for the tips. I have always hand sewn my bindings but I might just try machine binding after watching this. I would really appreciate a video on quilts for large print fabric. I bought some Laura Burch fabric with beautiful horses on it years ago. I love the fabric and want to showcase it. I have coordinating fabric with smaller print and want to make sure those lovely horses stand out.

I machine bind all of my quilts. Sew on the back and wrap to the front. Most of the time I use a 3 step zigzag but sometimes I use a straight stitch. Great video 😊❤️

Thank you so much for your videos! I have been struggling with binding using the back to front method 😭. I never thought of using method number 1 to machine bind. I was always under the impression it was for hand binding only.
