To eliminate getting sanding scratches under the blend edge. (silvers and silver based colors) Spray the blend area with Intercoat clear. which is a sort of clear binder basecoat before you start the job. Just the blend areas. this will fill in the sanding scratches so when you blend you wont see them.

@LakesideAutobody3 жыл бұрын
I think it's fairly new to the market - it's in the 300 range but does spray real nice, you can use variable tip sizes so it's like 10 guns in one, and the cleaning is an absolute breeze - even if you want to reuse the nozzles - just shoot some thinner through it right after painting - good as new.

What about all the “blend” overspray on the right side of the door? Didn’t some of it end as real gritty ? Does the gloss just cover that?
@LakesideAutobody Жыл бұрын
The base coat is not like clear coat or single stage it's just color - you don't have to worry about flow or getting it wet - it's just pigment and a carrier. Matter of fact you can spray your base a bit dry - helps align the metallic flakes. Clear gives the flow and shine :)
@drogba2k103 жыл бұрын
Pretty straight forward loved it. Just watched it all , not sure I missed it out I'm sure it's a metallic but did you do drop coat / dust coat?
@LakesideAutobody3 жыл бұрын
Yes - in a way. The last coat of paint was a bit dry because of the blend so it did two things at once, blended or tapered the paint into the old color and acted as a mist or drop coat. Don't worry about staying a bit dry with your base coat the clear will lay on flat - if your real worried about staying dry add a bit more reducer to keep the base coat even and flat

Great videos. I have a question for you. I just bought a used truck and when it's really hot and sunny out I can see some sand scratches in the paint. Can I just sand down some of the clear and repaint it or should i spray some sealer or primer down first before the base goes down
@LakesideAutobody3 жыл бұрын
You can sand the clear and repaint. Now that the paint job has fully cured and shrank as much as it's going to when you sand it - that's how it'll stay. You may be able to wet sand the clear with 1000-1200 and buff - it might cure the situation w/o having to paint. Let me know how it goes for you :)
@eksine3 жыл бұрын
just a quick question, do you have a door open to exhaust the overspray or how is the air being vented out? I know this isn't much but I've seen maaco fold back the side mirrors to help spray the door easier, I know taking advice from maaco is a joke but that might be a good idea, I don't know

@LakesideAutobody3 жыл бұрын
They never tell you to reduce enough - at least that's my opinion. My prediction is that the paint was too thick. For example if the mix ration says 4:1 paint to activator throw in 2 parts reducer. Reducer is the key to flow especially on hot days. You can also use some "slow" reducer if it's hot out and you need more time to let it flatten out - Let me know if that helps at all - Jerry

You could throw some epoxy primer on it. I don't have any issues spraying a few coats of lacquer primer on a repair area and leaving it outside. If you really are concerned prime it and throw a coat of old paint on it - even spray bomb. I've had good luck with polyester primer outside too. As long as its parked in the open so it can dry out fast your fine - i.e. not under trees, in weeds etc. Hope that helps a bit - nothing protects like paint though :)

There's no oil on a body man's hands - dry as a bone - you'll never get fisheyes doing this unless you have bad body shop habits. If you want absolutely dust free paint work you have to make 100% sure there's no dust on the surface before your first coat. I mix up some rust oleum and made a color. And painted a expensive old car waiting 3 days for it to dry then I lightly sanded . Then bam blasted it with a $700 clear and everyone loves it . I do put my slat and Pepper on the rust oleum be for I shoot it . It’s like a single stage slash clear mix I do for friends. 60 paint and even 60 clear . The rust oleum covers fast and protects from rust 😂

After doing bodywork for the day your hands will be bone dry - no worries about fish eyes at all. If your hands are oily for some reason don't do it. Mine are always dry and I've never had an issue. Not true at all. All body men and painters touch the panels that they are working on. Keep good shop habits and you'll never have a problem. That's all magazine, TV, and internet stories. I promise you the fisheyes didn't come from the oils on their hands (there is no oil after doing bodywork for 5 minutes) - maybe oil from the compressor line, over oiling the DA, rubbing compounds, fixing tools and cars in a body shop, etc. When ever you have a question about things like this ask some one that has worked in an actual body shop - like a painter at a dealership or even MAACO.

In a both you paint differently than a garage. The reason is there are lights on the wall that help you see exactly how much paint you are putting on. In a garage w/ bad lighting and it's impossible to see how it going on, you throw the coats on a bit light and then maybe hit it with a few more strokes to get it good and wet. Not sure what you mean - but that may address it.
