Punished Props Academy hello Bill 🙂, I Remember you saying something about (rubber latex ) was stopped being manufactured (while I’m not 100% if you where using it as a primer ) but since I’ve been doing my own research for indoor primers and there’s - Liquitex Gesso primer (clear, white, grey, black) (if need to thin 25% water if more then 25% add there Matte medium to the mix) look up priming miniature with Gesso, it starts off looking goopy but once it drys it keeps all the details of the miniature (so should be fine for large props) Plus the added benefit of not needing to be outside and is brush on, I’ve also seen people using silly putty for when there spray painting there figurines instead of tape (as they said it was easier to mould into shape then cutting out tape to fit some angles ) And for flashing - citadel mould line remover (warhammer 40K) I hope at lest one of these helps .

Airbrush tip most people don't know, and I hope this helps with future builds: Think about undercoats for all colors you spray. Light colors almost always need a light under coat. Red looks best with a yellow undercoat. I've found that to be true with almost every color system I've applied with airbrush but most particularly with transparent colors. Also, paint lightest colors first, before your darker colors because you won't have to clean out the airbrush completely each time: the darker colors will mix with but overpower the lighter ones after a few quick sprays.

Those are all very good guidelines for getting started with spraying layers of paint! Thanks for sharing. =D

I feel like overspray is totally fine with Borderlands prop remakes. The whole universe is grunge and mess, it would just mix in with the general game aesthetic. Edit: those metal rivet heads added quite a bit to the piece, real clever idea there. And the very light "cell-shading" effect on the gun was awesome to see. It wasn't totally trying to go off what's seen in the game but staying subtle really tied what's in-game to reality. Beautiful work! I'll have to try this now.

Punished Props is living proof that prop making doesn't have to be expensive to get professional results. I'm heavily inspired by punished Props and I am so ready to start making, but I'm worried that once I have all of the supplies for my props I will mess up and the money will have gone to waiste since I myself am on a budget, but I guess I gotta start somewhere! Thanks for the inspiration, I'll always continue to support this channel in anyway I can! You guys are always so humble and it's like a breath of fresh air to see such genuine people on this ego- hungry- drama- infested site known as KZbin. I've recommend this channel to several of my friends to share the same experience I had with this channel. So here is a sincere thank you!

I’m always so amazed by the time you take to make sure everything is precise and flush by your tools, patience, etc. Everything is so flush and clean looking. Also, idk if it’s just me, but there’s something ASMR’ish about these videos. It’s why I’m able to watch them, no matter how long they are. Can’t do that with other prop building videos LOL. A tip for the Tamiya paint bottles - a few seconds under low heat on a heat gun or high on a hair dryer will loosen the lid right up, no pliers needed. Hot tap water will work in a pinch, too.

you can get art markers from your local hobby store that are not sharpies. and they are also true black. pigma micron is the way to go. they use archival ink. a bit pricy but you can really get in the cracks of whatever your trying to detail. i use them on gundam models.

Wow! Great prop my friend! Even though I don't make props. I build scale models. I use a lot of Tamiya acrylics. I'd like to share a tip that I picked up along the way. I highly recommend using Tamiya paint retarder for both hand brushing and air brushing. Much smoother result. Also, I mix that and the thinner directly in the jar. Put an eye dropped full of the paint retarder in. Then I fill it with thinner to about an eighth of an inch below the rim. Drop in a stainless steel ball bearing . And you're good to go. Thank you for all the great videos! I learn a lot from you guysl

to get those two tone "splotches" I'd say take some grey and water it down to much so that it loses a lot of it's opacity, then let it dry and do it again. This gives a very natural feeling shift in color and could work on projects like this as well!

Banana runts are the best. Question. Is it best to let paint totally dry before demasking ?

For stencils I tend to pull them up when the paint is still a little wet, but I think it's a personal preference. It might work better or worse depending on the type of paint you use.

pr0 tipp for everyone: you dont have to use primer when you paint plastics. Use flame. Real! Dont burn parts, just make small touch with fire. After flame oxidation, base paint will stick better to the surface. Even without primer.

Great series of videos, quick question..., why do you use alcohol as a thinner for your acrylic paint? Why not water or something else ?
@punishedprops
@punishedprops 5 жыл бұрын
I found that alcohol works well for Tamiya paints specifically, but they do sell their own thinner. Most run-of-the-mill acrylic paints can be thinned with water.

You should make a paint bottle shaker. Refer to Luke Towan’s scenic landscape channel. He has a paint shaker tutorial that could help you out.

Question: Do you need to use alcohol to thin out the paint or can you also use water to thin the paint going through an airbrush?

Acrylic paints can be thinned with water. I've found that Tamiya paints specifically thin well with alcohol, but they also sell their own thinner.

What is your technique on using an model paint gun like that? I own an aircraft that needs some small touch ups, and purchased one to do the small areas that need to be redone.
