www.homebuildingandrepairs.co... Visit our website today to learn more about garage framing, home repairs and loft construction. This video is part 3 in our series and in this video I will provide you with a few examples of how a garage building project like this might be framed. This is a 20 foot by 24 foot two car garage with an upper level, winder stairs and the exterior walls and rake walls are 12 feet tall.

I wouldn't expect you to use balloon framing, but with the shortness of the attic, it does make more sense than platform framing; although you did transition to platform framing right of the stair loft landing.

You would need something to prevent the walls from spreading, like rafter ties or a ridge beam if you sit the second floor on top of walls.

@@gregvancom Lol, good point, failed to note it being a voted ceiling attack assuming collar ties every 4ft. Or ridge beam.

I'm surprised you left out the 2x4 stringer wall standoff running continuous along the bottom edge of the stringer to allow for gypboard and a 1x stair wall base (wall stringer).

I wanted to provide different construction methods in this series, for example this would be used if you're not drywalling.

what application are you using to design this? I would love to do something like this myself

I'm using standard house framing applications, but don't forget you might need structural engineering plans before using these applications.

So I can use a 2×4 or 2×6 19' long from the floor to the peak? I can get a board that long? So, if you build the bottom floor 8', how tall would the second floor be if I did it separate? At the tallest point? Peak? And if I built the first floor 8', single bottom sill, to top of double top sill is how inches total?

I would use larger lumber for taller walls and the longest lumber I've ordered was 2 x 6 that was 26 feet long and used for an exterior wall in a two story building. I can not provide you with lumber sizes or any type of structural information for a project like this and would suggest contacting an engineer, especially if you're not familiar with this type of construction.

Not the focus of this video but... Insulation. IF, if this the upper floor area was going to be insulated, does the rafter framing leave enough depth for minimum insulation value at the top plate?
@gregvancom

I will try to address insulation in another video. Insulation will depend upon use of building, for example if it's a detached garage, it might not require insulation, but living space will.

Silly question but the header, what is it made of? Is it LVL?
@gregvancom
@gregvancom 2 жыл бұрын
Construction standard lumber and it might be different in different parts of the world. In southern California we use Douglas fir and lvls and paralams and glulam's also. Great question and never think it's silly at least on our channel.
