I fast every week for 48 hours from Sunday night to Tuesday Night. During this time, I consume only water. On all other days, I stick to a meal once in a day (dinner) with just coffee or tea (with milk and sugar) during the day time. So far, this routine has worked wonders in my life. I do not consider myself 'strong-willed'. Unlike other fasting and exercise where you have to do something to be healthy, here, you don't have to do anything to remain healthy. I am not advocating against exercise, but exercise just wasn't reducing my weight. Edit: It looks like people haven't read through my comment properly. I am not against exercise. However, the gains from doing it, if you are OBESE, is negligible considering the effort. First bring your weight down to overweight, and then consider taking up exercise. Edit 2: Right now my goal is to be healthy. I am less strict with my diet (two protein rich vegetarian meals a day, 36 hour fasting every week) and I cycle and run almost on a daily basis.

Struggling with weight loss often feels like an uphill battle, where every attempt to make progress comes with its own set of challenges. When I heard the words, "You don't have a food problem; you have a WILL problem," 🔥🔥🔥 it hit me hard. It made me realize that discipline and consistency are the real hurdles, not just the food itself. I’ve decided to commit to a year of Alternate Day Fasting (ADF) to take control of my weight loss journey. My plan is clear: stop eating by 8 p.m. or earlier, then fast for 40 hours straight, breaking the fast at noon two days later. It’s not just about losing weight; it’s about proving to myself that I can stick to a challenging routine and develop the mental strength to succeed. ADF provides structure, reduces decision fatigue, and forces me to confront my habits head-on. By focusing on this rhythm, I aim to reset my relationship with food, foster discipline, and achieve the health and energy I’ve been striving for. This isn’t just about the scale-it’s about transforming my mindset, embracing resilience, and finally taking control of my health.

I designate one day per week as "feast day" and have anything I want for dinner, no holds barred. I generally do two 40-hour fasts per week-- one of them right after feast day. I almost never eat after 8pm and never before noon -- I want my main meal, the evening meal, finished 3 hours or more before going to bed. So at LEAST a 16-hour fast every day. Sometimes I do OMAD. It all depends on how I feel. This routine has been working well for me for several years -- during the first year of which I dropped 40+ lbs. I train on average of 1-2 hours 6 days a week and find no lack of energy on fasting days. That's my scene. If it helps anybody, cool.

Love these tips and love Dr. Fung. I've been doing intermittent fasting the correct way since mid Nov 2021 , along with a full fasting day and I've lost close to 20 lbs. The key really has been to not snack. I'd been intermittent fasting for over a year prior to discovering Dr. Fung and hadn't lost any weight. In fact, I picked up the COVID "19 lbs". Now I eat more calories, do 2 balanced meals a day (this just works with my schedule) and cut out all snacking. Sometimes I'll save my "snacks" to eat just before or after my meal. I don't feel food deprived and I'm considering this a lifestyle change. Most importantly, it's one that I can sustain without worrying about counting calories or avoiding favorite foods. Another big plus that I'm seeing on my smart scale is improvement in body fat (decreased) and increase in muscle mass and my BMI has hit a healthy range. I'm monitoring bone density as well. Yes, weightless was my #1 priority, but I've shifted that to overall optimal body composition for my age and body frame....a much healthier mindset.

One or two 36 hour fasts a week should be enough to keep most people on track for maintenance. Some of the many benefits of fasting and low carb diet on the immune system, blood pressure, blood sugar and anti-aging, all backed up by clinical data: Thymus stem cells are regenerated, which suppresses aging and renews the immune system. Fasting stimulates phagocytosis, the ingestion of bacteria and viruses by the immune system. Blood pressure is quickly and dramatically lowered, which is very important for a good outcome with the current pandemic. Fasting increases nitric oxide, which has manifold postive effects like reducing arterial plaque. Weght loss from fasting only loses10% lean tissue and 90% fat compared to the typical 25% lean tissue and 75% fat lost when calorically restricting for long periods. Blood clotting is reduced and blood clots and arterial plaque are reabsorbed into the body. Vitamin D plasma levels are increased, and vitamin D in turn increases autophagy! Blood sugar and insulin are lowered, allowing white blood cells to move more freely throughout the body and do their job. Ideal blood sugar is around 80. Some viruses activate glycolosis (the release of sugar in the body) and clinically it has been shown that decreasing glucose metabolism in the body weakens the influenza virus. The hormone Leptin is an immunomodulator that keeps the body from attacking itself and obesity causes leptin resistance. Fasting very quickly reduces leptin resistance and leptin levels and one day of fasting can cut your leptin levels in half and gets your immune system working properly again! When you move out of MTOR your body shuts down the building blocks of the cell which are used to produce organelles and proteins. This means the mechanisms needed by viruses to replicate are by and large unavailable when you are in a deeply fasted state. It stimulates the AMPK complex and activates autophagy. Autophagy (literally self eating) will cause cells to recycle foreign matter such as viruses and kill cancerous and senescent cells. AMPK does many helpful things in the body including activating the body's antioxidant defenses. Deep ketosis virtually eliminates chronic inflammation in the body. This can offset the life threatening symptoms of viral pneumonia which effectively kills you through inflammation. This also creates BHB ketones in your body, which also help your immune system and anti-oxidative system, especially in the brain. Ketones also provide an additional energy source during infection, which is critical when trying to fight off a bug. In fact you can have as much as three times the total energy available in your blood when you are in deep ketosis, or even more. It increases mitochondrial function and repairs mitichondrial DNA, leading to improved ATP production and oxygen efficiency and thereby making cells better able to fight off infection. Increased mitochondrial function also has the added benefit of increasing your metabolism and cancer prevention! Your body releases interferon which is also triggered by the body during viral attacks to shut down the replication ability of the surrounding cells and stop infections. After 72 hours or more fasted, your body actually recycles large numbers of immune bodies and creates new ones, rejuvenating your entire system. When you fast, this stimulates apoptosis in senescent or genetically damaged cells. This kills these cells off completely. Senescent cells are responsible for the effects of aging and are the root cause of the development of cancer. If it were possible to destroy them all it would completely stop aging and cancer. That is not possible but fasting can help limit these effects by killing off many of the affected cells and limiting the future effects of aging. Fasting also releases BDNF and NGF in the blood which stimulates new nerve and brain cell growth, helping a great deal with diseases like MS, peripheral neuropathy and Alzheimers. In fact, the biochemical precursor to BDNF is beta-hydroxybutyrate, which is the same ketone the body produces to nourish the brain while fasting. Autophagy induced by fasting even helps hair regrow. Dieters losing weight through intermittent fasting show greater reduction in waist size and increase in insulin sensitivity for the same weight lost and alternate day fasters were shown to lose fat while gaining muscle at the same time over a six month period. Fasting has been shown to increase bone marrow volume by 10% and levels of carnosine in the body in as little as a few weeks. Fasting also increases telomere length, negating some of the effects of aging at a cellular level. Eating one meal a day can bring most of these benefits to a lesser degree, and adding a few entire days off from eating per week will have even more effect especially when starting to feel poorly. Exogenous ketones can aid with fasting, making it easier in healthy people and allowing some people with specific issues to fast in spite of them without worrying as much about hypoglycemia. Children, pregnant or nursing women should not fast for periods longer than 16 hours. People with pancreatic tumors or hypoglycemia generally cannot fast at all. Type 1 diabetics can also fast but it is more complicated and should be approached with caution. Those with Addison's disease may also be unable to fast without liberal use of exogenous ketones, depending on severity. If you experience extreme symptoms of some kind, especially dizziness then simply break the fast and seek advice. The idea of adding regular short term “extras” to help with health and weight management is very good, rather than trying to be more restrictive all the time. 16:8, 2 meals a day is easy to maintain. The “extras” done monthly, seasonally or yearly would be the extra boost.

I like Fung like I don't normally see myself as someone who likes to get into the science of things but that's where I find myself in most things it just makes it easier to do things when it makes sense in your head like knowing that controlling how the hormones in your body affect your body takes the guesswork away.

The 1970s also had vastly less fructose in our diet. I remember, because I was there. Raw hamburger from the local butcher shop or grocery store didn’t have a warning label, because it wasn’t dangerous to handle or eat. Fasting works fine, but let us not forget WHY it is necessary. The food we eat, and what is in it. Routines are definitely one of the most powerful tools. Like every other weekend, Friday morning weigh in. Don’t make my target weight? Fast until Monday lunch. 4 or 5 weekends a year let’s me be good, without requiring perfection Every. Single. Day.

Thank you for these great tips Dr. Fung! Been on OMAD for a year! Helped me with my weight loss journey big time. I admit it, not as easy as everyone thinks. Really takes a lot of effort, strong will power, determination and mind set. Experienced different kinds of side effects and hitted a plateau too. But never stop! Dear Dr. Fung My case, I am a 48 year old male, athlete, I do intermittent fasting 18:6 every day of the week (with some exceptions) and my diet is low carb, eating mostly nuts, fish (salmon), avocados, salads, chicken, eggs and dairy (cheese). My BMI is 23.5, my body fat is 13% and my visceral fat is excellent according to impedecia meters. In my last blood test (the previous one was 2 years ago and I was not fasting), my total cholesterol was 290 mg/dL (they did not differentiate between HDL, LDL and VLDL) and triglycerides at 180 mg/dL. I feel better than ever, energetically. I play beach volleyball and I have a lot of energy. In the analysis I observed that the Acetone in urine was 10mg/dL so I was in ketosis since I had been fasting for 20 hours when I did the analysis. Also the Urea was slightly high at 54 mg/dL. I believe that my triglycerides are elevated because my body is in ketogenic mode and uses them as its main source of energy and that is why they are elevated. The liver will be exporting VLDL and my adipocytes will be releasing triglycerides to the liver. I would like to know your opinion about this situation (High Total Cholesterol, TG, and Urea), but the truth is that my condition is better than ever. Thank you very muc

Dr Fung, I hope you are well. I hope you could do some videos on the following topics, since I cannot seem to find much information on this. 1. Can CKD Patients fast? 2a. How much water should CKD patients drink and how does fasting affect water consumption? 2b. Why are Damaged Kidney Patients told to drink a lot of water, which I believe makes the Kidneys work harder to filter that water and makes them go to the bathroom constantly? Should CKD Patients actually drink less water throughout the day to give the kidneys a rest? 3a. Can CKD patients dry fast and is it dangerous to dry fast with damaged kidneys? I've seen videos that say dry fasting helps the kidneys filter like crazy, and I would think helps the kidneys out. 3b. Adding to the above with water consumption myths, would Dry Fasting actually help with Kidney repair, since when the Kidney isn't filtering all that water all day every day, it has a chance to heal? Similar to how when the body isn't wasting tons of energy digesting 5x a day, the body can use that energy for other things? 4. IS protein actually bad for Kidneys(I've seen videos saying protein is a myth, and when one of my Father's Dr's told him he was leaking protein, the protein he was leaking was a protein I looked up saying it was naturally created by the liver, so the Dr's were saying eating protein would affect it, but his protein leaking went up when he dropped animal proteins, but apparently veggie proteins were higher up, but the dr said the veggie proteins don't affect the protein leak, which non of this made any sense, at the time and still doesn't). My father has been battling with CKD for a few years now, he's tried all sorts of alternative stuff with mixed results (going up points right away, and then gradually dropping a point or so every month), but wont fast and doesn't want to do things other than what traditional medicine tells him too (low protein, low salt, lots of water, lots of veggies). He has started with adding some sea-salt into the diet, but still keeps things low. Thank you!

1. yes 2a lots 2b concentrated toxins destroy the kidney 3a some people do but it is risky 3b dry fasting gives stronger autophagy and other benefits, it's like double fasting. But you can just fast longer on water to get same results and it's safer. 4. no Most of these answers are in his videos if you want to go back and watch, but they do not have dedicated videos.

As a revert muslim i found out by my teacher the Prophet Muhammad fasted 2 days in a week Monday and Thursday, ate 1 to 2 meals a day, sometimes did not see meat for 6 week because of the hardships he and his companions went through, he emphasized the use of having black seed oil, olive oil, figs and apple cider vinegar along with eating fruit or vegetables that are in season. I have lost 7stones over 20 months period Alhamdulilah..❤😁

Check your intake of protein, perhaps add more daily in the form of grass feed meats, fish, and homemade bone broth (good collagen too). Check your carb intake and reduce if necessary, particularly highly processed carbs like sugar, flour, white rice. Give yourself some time. Make the 12 hours stick and gradually extend it on each end, or whichever end is easier for you. Be kind to yourself.

Yes, continue to fast in your week. Your body benefits so much from fasts. It kicks into autophagy after longer fasts, which destroys old cells or cell parts. Also, growth hormones goes up after longer fasts, so that your great body will grow new needed cells using some old bits it took during autophagy. Dr Fung still fasts for the great health benefits.

Both Lent and Advent are traditionally periods of fasting for Catholic and Orthodox Christians, though the Eastern Rite Catholics and most of the Orthodox churches take them more seriously nowadays. Roughly six weeks of Lent before Easter and four before Christmas. That’s about a fifth of the year with less food and (depending on tradition) possibly severe restrictions in diet. Look at online cookbooks for these times of year from some Orthodox parishes and many dishes are vegan or nearly so. Probably not enough for nutritional deficiencies…
