Today we start our ‪@SummitRacing‬ sponsored journey on rebuilding the very first engine I ever worked on. A Ford 302 small block out of a Bronco from 1981. We are going for a decently hot street build so we can wake up our old Bronco and churn out more than the 135 horsepower or so it made when new.
I am going to show you exactly how to rebuild this thing step by step and leaving no detail out! If you have any questions feel free to leave them below and I will get to them. Thank you so much for watching!

If you want to reuse old bolts, put them in a container of vinegar overnight. Wire brush them the next day and they will look brand new. Wash the vinegar off with baking soda and water then put some oil or wd40 on them to keep the rust from coming back

The 302 officially came out in 1968, but in 1967 the 289 got the longer cylinder walls needed for the increased stroke. So if you want to stroke out a pre 1967 289 block (back in the day it was done with a machined Y block truck crank) you will find when the piston reaches BDC, it can come out of the bore just enough to rock around. So consider a modern roller cam block if you're going to go stroker--and if you nab an Explorer engine from the 1990's, you'll get the GT40P heads for free. The Mallory distributor is a good find (there are companies online who will rebuild or use it for parts), those who want an OEM high energy distributor like GM's HEI have to find an early 1980's unit that didn't require computers that came out in 1985-86. 302's come with two different weight flywheels over their lifetime so don't get it mixed up if you replace parts. I like to put old fasteners into a 50/50 brine of salt and vinegar, using the typical plastic containers your local deli sells you salads in. you can write on it exactly what is in there and they'll derust as you continue on with the engine--it'll probably work on that thermostat housing as well. when you pull a cylinder head, leave a couple of bolts in finger tight to hold it from dropping on your feet (dowel pins should do that, but if the engine's had a rebuild they may be missing). find what piston is at TDC, pull the spark plug, and run some compressed air into the chamber--even a bicycle tire pump could work. So long as the cylinder holds compression, the air pressure should pop it right loose for you

Great detailed video! I got ahold of a 302 out of a '73 mustang with the matching transmission. I tore it down like you did and stroked it to a 347. Used roller rockers and lifters. I put it in my '66 mustang. Now its faster than the speed of color!

I had an 86 f150 with the 302, had a few issues, but ran great, plenty of power but my dad and I were gonna get rid of the EFI and put a carb on it, when I pulled the intake I saw bent pushrods, I swear it did not run like it had any internal damage, shocked everyone around lol, the ford small blocks, and even big blocks from back in the day we're amazingly resilient engines

I have two 289 blocks ( 1965) A-code out of a Fairlane 500 both were running when pulled out. One has a crane cam, I brought it with new lifters, headers and a brand new holly 600cfm fired it up. Ran perfectly, just had to idle it down. Put it in a 73' ford f-150 with big dune diggers tires, ran real well in a 4000lbs + truck!!

Couple of thoughts. First: shocked to see the FACTORY hose clamps! I really think they are a better design than the ones you can get at the parts house and would love to use them on all of my cars. Second: Had a 302 in an 84 Grand Marquis and had to change the water pump. Pretty sure Ford hung the water pump on a chain at the factory and proceeded to build the car around it. Three: Made the same sound you did when I spotted the bent push rods.

You forgot to mention draining the oil out of the oil pan before removing the flywheel bolts. Unlike Chrysler and GM V-8 engines from this era, the crankshaft flange on a Ford is drilled completely through. Removing the flywheel bolts before draining the oil will result in oil running out everywhere.
@2carpros
@2carpros 5 ай бұрын
No it wont. The oil level is below the crankshaft. This engine had oil in it and you can see not a drop came out when I took the flexplate off. Thanks for watching!
@ksman9087
@ksman9087 5 ай бұрын
@@2carpros But if someone were to try to replace a flywheel with the engine still in the car, depending on the angle of the car on supports, oil will run out everywhere. I have seen it happen. I just thought that you might want to point this out because not everyone has an engine stand and an engine, even if removed from the car, could be setting at an angle where oil could run out and make a mess. I am not trying to be argumentative, just thought that pointing this out in a video might encourage viewers to drain the oil first and then no matter what angle the engine was setting when the flywheel bolts were removed there would be no mess. I DID enjoy the video. Keep up the good work.
