hey guys bringing you a viking chair today, also known as a camp chair, stargazer chair. so many names so little time but luckily this build his super quick. what i really loved about making this is its simplicity, it only takes one 8 foot piece of 12 in x 2 in pine that you can find at your local home improvement store and a few tools. after you have it cut it is basically blank canvas for you to do whatever you want. hope you enjoy watching me make this and feel inspired to make your own.
here is a link to two videos I watched that really helped me with this bulid.
the first is from four oaks craft : • Make a Campfire Chair
the second is from the viking woodsmith:
• Stargazer Chair with V...

Hi Native. How did you do the design on the back? Looks Great
@MakerCuisine
@MakerCuisine 4 жыл бұрын
I printed the design onto a piece of paper then cut it out, you could also use carbon paper. After that I used a Dremel and some chisels to carve out the image

Love the chair. Really good job of explaining the design process, better than most I’d say. 👍 Nothing says “South Florida” like short sleeves in November! 🥵

Hahaha for sure, it's definitely not as cold down here as up north. I tried to be thoughtful when explaining it . Thanks for watching and the kind words!

Native Son Wood Art I grew up in Wellington (go wolverines!). Now I am in Southern California. It is California-cold right now which means about 50 degrees. 😝. I try never to complain the few days it dips like this because half the time the person i’m speaking with online is snowed-in somewhere in rural Canada 🇨🇦 🥶

How far from the end do you measure up for the 1st line of the mortice cut out? I know the seat is 12 " from the edge up.
@MakerCuisine
@MakerCuisine 27 күн бұрын
Hello, it has been a while but if i recall it is about 16" up. You can adjust it depending on the angle you want. There are a couple of videos in the description that i referenced. One of them has free plans to download.

I guess I have lead a sheltered life as I had never heard of the viking camp chair. It is very clever. easy to transport. You did a great job and the glow in the dark was the perfect touch! I am now curious... does the yaki sugi method you use have any relation to the tattoo of fire "火" on your arm? :-)
@MakerCuisine
@MakerCuisine 4 жыл бұрын
Thank you very much, the tattoo itself more or less had to do with my affinity to fire, I like to use it in my work and I also deal with it in my career as I am a chef.

Is that treated wood? If it is you have to wait for it it dry out before you apply a finish. Other than that awesome build!!!!!

Great video! Gave me a idea! Do you have to use epoxy or will regular glow in the dark paint work? Great work,this will be a great quarantine project
@MakerCuisine
@MakerCuisine 4 жыл бұрын
I used epoxy,but glow in the dark paint will totally work to, I actually added glowing vine using glow in the dark spray paint, you just have to make sure you use enough paint for it to absorb the light enough to glow for a long time, good luck, I would love to see it when it's done👍
@shandelcleary3246
@shandelcleary3246 4 жыл бұрын
Thanks! I’ll definitely do that, one other question, when you measured for the seat for the mortise,was it 2 inches in as well? Yes I’ll definitely send u a pic! You do nice work!
@MakerCuisine
@MakerCuisine 4 жыл бұрын
I believe so yes, I don't remember exactly because it's been a while but as long as you cut the tongue the same distance in as the mortise it should line up, I kept the seat the same width as the back board so that made it easier to line up
@MakerCuisine
@MakerCuisine 4 жыл бұрын
I apologise for the unclear answer I gave before, the answer is definitely yes, the mortise is measured 2 inches in from either side and 2 inches wide

what are the dimensions
@MakerCuisine
@MakerCuisine 2 жыл бұрын
The entire piece is an 8 foot 12 × 2, i cut it into two identical 4 foot pieces, but in hindsight i would have done a 3ft and a 5ft cut so the top is taller and your head had a place to rest

Two pieces that are 2 inch× 12 inches by 36 inches, for the seat go up 12 inches from the front and mark that, then you can come in 2 inches in from either side for the tongue. On the other piece mark 12 inches up then another 2 inches up, then 2 inches from both sides to cut out the mortise for the tenon.
