I wish ours turned out as good as yours. We decided to use a Brad nailer so it was quicker as the pocket holes take so long with the one we have. It is pretty sturdy. And we also used cedar wall siding in place of the 5/8 wall boards. Mostly all scraps laying around we used. Every time the A and B’s don’t fit right and need to cut out more than 45 degrees.

I've built three so far and everyone that has seen them wants one. My wife got the first one which I made out of PT Pine (she always gets the first one!) and two from cedar. What I've learned: Cedar splits really easy. PT Pine clogs my Kreg Drill bit. You can reduce the amount of screws you use on the inside walls to two if you are using glue made for outdoor use like Titebond 3 (one on top and one on bottom for each board). The glue should keep it from shifting and the force of the dirt inside will also keep them in place. I glued every joint just in case. Not all pickets are 5/8 so choose carefully or you'll have screws popping out. I glued and pin nailed the trim at the top because I don't like screws showing (just make sure you tell customers not to pick it up by the trim). No matter how carefully you cut the trim, there will usually be gaps in the corners so save your sawdust and put a bead of glue in the gap then rub the sawdust in to hide the gaps. I somehow wound up with enough scrap to put 4 pieces in the bottom and I cut them to 7 degrees as well so they would be wedged in (also glued and pin nailed, fingers crossed that is enough, will update if one falls apart when dirt is added). If you are using the Kreg K4, there is a setting for 5/8 but don't use it. Lock the stop collar on the drill bit halfway between the 5/8 and 1/2 inch setting and set the riser block to 5/8. I still had a couple of screws slightly poke through but a grinder fixed it. I also used 1" screws instead of 1.25" on the last two because the 1.25" were consistently poking through. Could be a difference between the K4 system I have and the K5 Matthew is using. For the first time in my 15+ years of woodworking, I'm planning to make things to sell. I want a new table saw and a new band saw and I want to pay for it without going into debt. Thank you Mr. Peech for motivating me to get a side hustle at 52 :)

@C_MR_WYld3072 жыл бұрын
Hey! You and your videos have inspired me to start creating with wood, so I thank you for that. I learned a valuable lesson this week. I bought your great planter plans; however, I think you should put out a message, to remind us newbies, that not all "picket fence" boards are going to be the same width or thickness. I'm brand new to woodworking, so I just assumed an industry-standard on width and thickness. I bought 9 cedar picket fence boards without measuring anything but the height. I didn't bother measuring the boards' width until I discovered that I couldn't follow the cut list. 'No problem,' I thought. I have more boards. I made several mistakes on bevels and angles (remember, I'm new to this), so I had to cannibalize another board to fix my dumb stuff. So, when I got all of my cuts for my first planter, I pocket holed the A and B top and bottom boards. When I tried to make the first wall, I noticed a discrepancy in the thickness. All work stopped, suddenly, as I realized that I couldn't use the pocket hole clamp. My improvisation caused the leg to split when the screw pierced the leg. (I know you said to predrill everything, but I didn't/don't know how to do that through a pocket hole) I wanted to share this experience with you because, as I said, you've inspired me to create and, hopefully, make a bit on a side hustle. I'm working up my skills to be able to build your concealment furniture/shelves. From the planter fiasco, I know I have a way to go, but thanks to your videos and encouragement, I'll not stop trying. I'd really like to hear your suggestions on groups and creators to follow/be a part of. You and 731 are my goto guys. Thanks for reading. M R

@smattt2 жыл бұрын
The first board I attached to the leg split the leg as well. I just predrilled all the remaining pieces and didn't have any more splits. Line up your top and bottom boards like you were gonna screw them in and then insert a drill bit and drill a pilot hole through the pocket holes on the board. Make sure not to go too deep. Once you've done that, remove the top/bottom boards and the points of entry should be clearly visible on the legs. Go ahead and predrill and then attach the boards as you normally would.

I made two of these today. It took me just under 4 hours with only one real mistake. I used cedar fence pickets. If you follow the plans, there will be a gap on the A sections between the top of the wall boards, you can even see it in the video. If I make any more, all of the top and bottom rail boards will be about 1/4” shorter than the plans. Also, 1 1/4” pocket screws blew through the legs when putting all my frame pieces together, they must’ve been thinner than spec’d. I wound up using 1” instead and had much better results. This was my first attempt at compound miters and they are a beast. Overall, the wife liked the end result, so that’s all that counts.
@flyghboy2 жыл бұрын
Thank you! I was starting to think this was only happening to me. Going to get some 1" screws tomorrow. Ripped some 3/8" strips from scrap to put between the wall boards. Hoping that works.
@kateemblom42222 жыл бұрын
This happened to me, too. I opted to create a space between the boards because the gap looks as if it's an intentional part of the design.
@kateemblom42222 жыл бұрын
I'd also like to add that I got extra fence pickets to build a second planter. I measured those and discovered that my pickets weren't 5.5 inches wide, but 5.25 inches wide. This is why there's a gap in the A sections. As I mentioned above, I fiddled around to find an aesthetically pleasing gap and went with this, assuming that people will put pots in the planters or use coconut fiber linings if they plan to use dirt.

I printed the blue prints out and followed everything to the T, however when I went to put the screws into the legs they rip right through the legs. I set the Jig to 1/2 but the screw doesn't grab correctly, it just gets the corner of the leg. Not sure what I'm doing wrong. Not sure if anyone else has this problem?

I set the Kreg in between 1/2 and 3/4 then pilot holed with a 1/8 bit from the outside into the pocket hole. ( to guide the screw) It helped a wee bit, go slow

Anyone find that the fence pickets like at Home Depot are really wet? Any tips for drying?
@mikecangelosi3417 Жыл бұрын
Just got some at my local Lowes, they are stored outside mostly uncovered. Between the Pressure Treated and the weather they are very wet. Store inside in a climate controlled location if possible. Also put strips of wood in-between each layer of boards to allow proper airflow.

Just bought the pickets today. Gonna start on these tomorrow. Do you apply a finish?
@lextheap16382 жыл бұрын
I think he said in the other video he sells them without a finish so the buyer can paint them however they want

Things must be Cheap where you live. 1 picket is 8 dollars plus tax where I live . And those many screws would be 6 or 7 dollars

called the local lumber yard, cedar dog ear fence pickets are nearly 6 bucks a piece. with time invested is that still going to be profitable?

Thats high. I just bought more today for $4. How about the pine fence pickets?
@ericberg45222 жыл бұрын
@@MatthewPeechWoodworking just shy of $5/board.. probably had to do with my location, Eastern Montana doesn't exactly have a thriving maker community

@@MatthewPeechWoodworking so I had to drive an hour and a half (luckily I was headed there anyway) but a box store had the cedar fence pickets for 3.59 each. So I grabbed a dozen, I was in my wife's car because of fuel mileage. They barely fit with the back seat down.

I live in the Fort Worth area and I'm selling 4 to a friend for 150. Gonna advertise them for 50 each. I'm gonna add an initial to the front of my sample as an upcharge.

About 10 bucks for cedar

60 each or 2 for 100, most people want a pair and the to for 100 stops them from trying to bargain ;)

Just attempted this… anyone else having issues with the pocket screw length? 1-1/4” screws blowout the adjoining piece and 1” screws dont bite. I’m pretty frustrated with the plans, but it seems others have been successful so it’s probably user error, but still…
