How to build a Sand Box with a lid that converts to bench seats for the kids. This build is made out of 2x8x8's and 2x4x8's. This is an easy project for anyone and great if you have small children.

I built this based on your plans... I used 2x4s and 2x8s not due to cost, but for the added strength. I also used pressure treated lumber and painted it since we have such crazy weather fluctuations in Northern AZ. Thanks for the great video!

How much total did you spend on the project

10:45 part where the girl gave her opinion and a thumbs up followed by the old “OK” is something I can relate to heavily.

I’ve been building this project based on your cut list and have discovered that the 47.5 inch board needs to be 50 inches in order to have inch spacing in between the 2x4s. In my case I didn’t have a table saw to use to take the edge off the boards so not sure if that had anything to do with it but doing the math it comes out to 50 inches.

I made one just like this a few years ago. The mistake I made was using deck boards across the top. Which when opened as a seat was plenty strong. however, when closed cause my span was about 5 feet was a little flimsy. I like the idea of using the thicker material on the top for this reason.

Hey PoPo, your video clearly shows that the 2x8x46" with the pocket holes goes inboard of the 2 3/4 mark made on the 2x8x47 1/2 board. After I assembled my sand box I discovered that the 2x8x46" board should be assembled outboard of the 2 3/4" line. In that i'm a novice with these projects, I'll be sure to re-re-re-measure.

So i built this and made my cuts prior to reading comments! If you want to build this without having a planer and table saw (i don't have either) you need to cut the 2x4s to 50 inches, as others have said. They don't work as 47.5" with the inset boards...HOWEVER, I made it work without buying more wood. The 47.5" boards fit across the other way, use a 1" spacer from the edge of the box and place the first 2x4 there, use a 1/2" spacer from that first board. Place every other board 1/2" space, even the backrest. This leaves 1/2" gaps even between the 2 "doors". This design does not work how he built it without taking the edges off and planing the edges. My sandbox came out well though and my kids are happy! @preppermama #preppermama

Hi, why is the inset of the base necessary? Reason why I am asking is because I will have to make the walls of the base from 2 planks for each side, as the planks I have are not wide enough to give me the desired height of the base.

Hey popo, for the 2- 46½ pieces Why do you set them 2¾" from the end? Is it to make the bench more stable when you sit on it? Thanks.

Hey Popo! Did you have to space 1” to accommodate for the 2x lumber or could you have done 1/2” and it still be functional? Thank you!

Khaled Holmes I believe I did because if the thickness of the wood, it’s been so long since I built that it’s hard to remember. If your building it you can play with the gaps to see what works best.

Getting ready to buy material for this and your measurements do not add up for the length of the (12) 2 x 4 x 47 1/2". To go across from one edge to the other you would need a 49" long 2x4. So the (12) 2x4's that you say to cut at 47 1/2" long need to be cut at 49" or the better way would be to cut the(2) 2x8x46 to 44 1/2. That way you still can utilize the 8ft 2x4's by getting two pieces from each

Chad Bolen it’s been so long I can’t remember if I had to cut more off the cross brace or not. I will measure it for you this evening when I get home and let you know for sure.

I ran into the same issue as well. It should be 49 based off of the measurements. I found out the hard way after I cut 2x4 to 47 1/2. They were too short. Ill know on the next one.

Why in the world would you ever remove the radius profile from the lumber? Massively increasing the chance of significant slivers and potential actual cuts from the sharp corners that have insisted on wasting you time producing?

Ok I’m no perfectionist but I followed your tutorial and it is screwed up but I’ve already cut everything and started putting it together and your measurements are wrong. You said 2-2x8s 47 1/2 and two at 46. That is wrong. The 46” pieces should be 44 1/2 to make it work like you put it together. Get your measurements right before you post. This sucks

He uses better wood and a better method. Not to mention, these are all over the internet, who knows who initially had it.
