You my man, by far have the best channel on explaining and constructing sub boxes. I’ve been intending to make my own box for at least 2 years now. I’ve bought all the saws (circular & jig ). I’m ready to take it the task on. I have two 10” Skar SDR’s 🔊

Thank you for the kind words, I got a few videos I am going to be doing on speaker box buildling, I made a few types of videos to see which one people lean toward and the speaker box got enough attention that Ill be bringing more elaborate boxes to the channel. This was just a test to see if my 15 year old SPL box would grab any attention, It was simple but very effective box. Thanks again for the sub.

I have a single 10" Rockford Fosgate Power T1 2-ohm subwoofer. Someone built a box using MDF for the bottom and particle board for the rest of the box. Is that a bad idea? I have installed the subs yet.

Have a request/tutorial thinking about building a center console for my 2001 gmc. Instead of using mdf using pvc pipe for frame then fiberglassing it. What do you think?
@RandomAudioGuys
@RandomAudioGuys 6 жыл бұрын
I think it could lead to a very awkward look because your frame will somewhat be like building a 2 x 4 frame and then fiberglassing cloth over it.

Particle on this one. MDF was used on our how to build a console subwoofer box video. Our shop uses 3 types of wood, Particle, MDF, and Birch. All depends on what a customer is paying for that build, and with good bracing practices your able to substitute sometimes to help customers who cannot afford other wood choices.

Sir Random what kind of glue you use?thanks
@RandomAudioGuys
@RandomAudioGuys 5 жыл бұрын
Titebond 2 , There are 3 levels of titebond wood glue that I know of, Type 2 is the best for boxes, 1 is too thin, and 3 is too thick.

I'm building a down firing box for a single 12. Would it hit harder ported or sealed? And if I port it where should I put the port?

+Chris Bright vehicle model would help. Always will hit harder ported. And typically the side is the most common option use for port location.

how do you get your measurements? airspace? and port size?
@RandomAudioGuys
@RandomAudioGuys 8 жыл бұрын
If by measurements I typically work within the airspace area the manfacterer of the woofer supplies you with. Then I see which vehicle I am working on and I work within the demensions of the vehicle and choose the best wood type or even fiberglass to achieve the best results. Airspace is a simple equasion, Width X Height X Depth divide that number by 1728 to get the square cubic inches. Port math is a little more complicated, there are websites that have port calculators just google it. My math is a little different from my years in the lane but the website ones will get the average user where they need to be.

I've made many boxes but y did u block the top and bottom of the port with the brace??? And wouldn't the port structure brace it on that side. Sorry if I'm sounding like a dick lol just curious

Hey no problem, we dont learn or know why if we don't ask. Okay so me knowing the subwoofer that was going in the box I 2 staged the port , if you look at our fiberglass videos you will notice it is also 2 staged just in a different way. It can make for a cleaner sound but not something you want to do for an SPL version of the same box. The brace actually braces top,bottom,front and back as it touches all walls. ( 2 staging a port is like taking a smaller port and unloading it into a larger port. Its interesting when I first started doing that and over the years Ive grown to use it more often. Not for pure SPL, ill never block air restriction in those, this box setup works in alot of variations. SQL, SPL, 2 10 inch, 1 12 inch or 13W7. When you make them for a living you have to factor all these things in. If I were doing the 2 10inch for example it would have 1 brace in the center , 2 12" SPL The bracing goes in a different spot on the box, and in this SQL Example it just so happens it works best downplaying the air load into a larger chamber. But at the same time I can cut the same box 5 times and use all 5 in different ways. So at least you understand our method behind it is alot to do with business and how 1 box can be so universal and speeds up build times. I do plan on doing some NEXT LEVEL! Boxes soon , kerfing , logos, ect... I just was running awhile without a video and thought hey heres an example, and its brought up some good questions that I hope I can continue to explain my reasoning behind it.

I noticed the question you asked, He used a brace to brace front to back and top to bottom, The port doesnt offer that, It just braces top to bottom. Best to brace in all directions like he did, built one for shits and giggles, little box hits hard with an Old 12 inch Mojo I had laying around. Pretty good design for high end woofers. Dont know how a cheap sub would do it seems like to much airspace for that.

Particle board? I haven't seen that since late 80's-early 90's. Savings compared to a sheet of MDF isn't worth it...too much flex & porous. Maybe for beauty panels and things of that nature but for a sun enclosure, regardless of a customers budget, I wouldn't even consider that an option.

Fair enough on your opinion, But sounds like you do some box buildling so let me ask you this, Chinese garbage box from 5/8th MDF or even 3/4 MDF vs American made with Titebond II glue ? Which one do you take at this point. Not every market allows for certain prices and you have to consider a customer will go to a cheap Amazon or Ebay box made with inferior MDF , not the stuff were use to, Im talking the pink colored MDF that has less than half the density of what we offer. Your honest in your opinion and I like that, but maybe see from a smaller market area where Amazon and Ebay control certain aspects, I know the box I am going to offer has a great build quality and output than a off the shelf chinese offered counterpart. So maybe if you consider that you see where we come from, Tho we have went to offering only 100% MDF faces on our boxes as a side adjustment. And of course Im sure you realize we do offer MDF and birch also but on budget builds most dealers just offer a simple BBOX from china that Atrends offers or even worse a Qpower box and neither offer glued joins, they build, Brad, Carpet, and put a seam caulk to make it look better but a few hits from a decent woofer and they are rattling before they leave the lot so we chose a different path, hope you see the value in what we are trying to do and adjust according to feed back and the MDF faces on budget boxes seems to address our budget customer concerns. Thanks again for the honest reply, and hope you see mine as honest as well.

PS, we do not have access to 5/8th or 1/2 inch MDF in our area, 3/4 only. 42.00 a sheet vs 18.99. And from our other videos coming you will see MDF is the biggest part of what we offer, just show that it can be done at a pretty good savings if properly braced to offset some of the cost to a consumer who makes minimum wage and is on a tight budget.

Random Audio Guy dude the first box that I ever built for myself with on just over a minimum wage budget supporting a family of four without a working spouse and was still able to afford a sheet of proper MDF to build my box, you're trying to make it sound as if people with low incomes need your stuff they do not I get it that yeah you are trying to rationalize your cheap habits which is return is how you make money to support your family so I can't knock you for it but don't put your means of saving money on the poor man I've been poor all my life and yet because of my interest in the audio field still found a way to make ends meet supporting a family of 4 without a working spouse on a minimum wage type income to build myself what has now come to be four different boxes that would dwarf the one that you just built just say it like it is you build cheap so that you can save money don't try to make yourself look like a humanitarian by using cheap materials then call it something else

The actual material costs are probably like 15% of the finished enclosure's price and it takes nothing away from the builder to work with better materials. I'd much rather work with plywood than a damn fragile particle board. The wall material also isn't the only material needed so the difference between boards is even smaller.
@penttijakonen3817
@penttijakonen3817 4 жыл бұрын
The build looks nice, but the bracing is done literally in one of the worst ways possible. You don't need the bracing in the corners, you need them in the middle. You could have made more effective bracing with less material.

Oh, just saw the port blocked by the bracing. This is terrible. = /
@herus6672
@herus6672 2 жыл бұрын
You dont actually need that brace next to the port because port acts as a brace itself . And that brace next to port is gonna restrict air flow because top and bottom of the port is blocked off due the brace . But otherwise very good build .
