Thank you for making this video. So helpful. I'm a rookie hobby carpenter and I love making things; like building tables, pantries, hanging cabinets, building closets, turning dressers into vanities and so much more. But I'm about to conquer 3 farmhouse awnings and have such anxiety. Shouldn't be hard with what I've already done, but I'm stressed because it will attach to our home's exterior. Enjoyed the video very helpful. I'm feeling empowered. Plus save a ton of money...win win, win 😊.

Your welcome, thank you for your feedback! It sounds like you have the skills to make these awnings, they can get heavy so have help installing them! Sometimes I tend to get anxious about changing something that I can’t take back to original state, but am always happy with the finished product and then I wonder why I worried. Have confidence, don’t overthink it, it will come out great! Good-luck!

I wish I could have seen how you attached it to the side of the metal building. We got metal siding on our house and was planning on putting some awnings on it like this, just wanting to get a good seal between the metal siding and the awning.

I need to do a short video explaining how I mounted them. I used a roof sealant on the ribs where fasteners attached the awnings. I chose not to flash the wall because the window was already properly flashed and the awnings were added after.

Lol...me and my wife did ours and we do have a small video on it. And with that, 3 people would be better than two! Two to hold up and one fastening it to the wall. We used 4" inch ledger locs. Thanks for your feedback! Could the wood mold where the metal ribs contact the cedar. I guess possibly over time. My thought is cedar fences are out in the full elements, no roof above, for 40 plus years and I have demolished them without seeing mold or rot other than at ground contact.

Do you have any pictures or advice of how to mount across the battens (above the window) and metal flashing needed on the small gap?
@buildingwithjosh3 жыл бұрын
I mounted the header board into studs above the window where my ribs (battens) are. I have metal siding so I didn't want to cut a flashing in since it was weatherproofed. I just put a silicone sealant around my pre drilled holes where to mount the header board. What kind of siding do you have? That could dictate how to flash it.
@tomstepp69456 ай бұрын
Josh, if you could would you have installed the awnings prior to the metal siding being installed?
@buildingwithjosh6 ай бұрын
That’s a very good question. If the siding was a different type such as lap or if the walls were stuccoed, I would definitely recommend to install the awning prior. I also would if it is a larger awning or different design, which I have in another video discussing how I flashed these. For this size of awning with vertical steel panels, I would still prefer to do after the siding is complete. It’s difficult with this design and margins to install prior with the corbels coming down.

Great video I would like to do something like this as I have a water issue coming into a door other side of the house has overhang opposite side of the house does not. I would like to have seen the flashing connected to the structure typically on a stucco texture, he would have to bust out the stucco and find the moisture barrier and connect appropriately, which is a lot of work, would it be possible to connect flashing to house without busting out stucco? Also, would’ve been nice to see the connection of the metal roof panels even though minor and drip edge installation great video thank you. Do you have any videos on building larger sheds that will be a project of mine. Also, I am a landscape, construction and electrician, but I’ve also done framing block, brick, concrete, stucco, framing, and remodels. Thank you for your video.
@buildingwithjosh Жыл бұрын
Thanks you for your comment! I did make another short video going over how I mounted and flashed the awnings. In the case of adding a small roof to stucco, I would consider going right on top. Reason being is if you open up the stucco, it’s hard to match color and get it flashed without a lot of work. If you go right on top, the wall wont be compromised as likely for water penetration. I’ve done something similar before to brick and stucco walls. Simply install a wall flashing and face screw to wall and use a good clear roof sealant behind and on top of the wall flashing. This is just my opinion though. Sounds like you have done many trades which takes a lot of skill! Keep of the good work .I am working on a small shop currently, so I will have videos combing out in the future!

Looks great, was wondering, without flashing, wouldn’t water get behind the “header board” where it meets the metal?
@buildingwithjosh3 жыл бұрын
Yes it can. However I put a l flashing on the back side of the headerboard that wraps the top of the roof, so the wood is protected. Also when I mounted it, I put a clear silicone sealant where my screws went through the siding in the ribs. So if water gets through the lower parts of the steel, it doesn't matter because it runs to the window flashing, where the ribs are, I have a sealant on them. The house stays protected and the wood is cedar so it should be good at this rate for a long long time!

Great job. Thanks. I'm planning on building a couple very similar but my span is about 2 meters (I'm in Australia, we use the metric system) and I'm installing them on my own which might be a problem. I reckon they might be too heavy for me to lift up into place by myself. Do you reckon it would be OK if I mount the two end brackets up on the wall first before I screw the cross bar and roof to them. I'm guessing as long as the two end brackets are level then it should be OK ..... Right? Let me know what you think. Ian.
@buildingwithjosh4 жыл бұрын
Ian, you could definitely do that! You could build it in place. Sometimes it can come our better if things are imperfect on the wall. You can always use a temporary 2x4 vertically to help support the roof till you get your brackets mounted. Good luck, I bet it will look great!

What is the name of the trim that goes along the top edge of the awning where it meets the wall metal. And does it keep water from running down the wall and between the awning and the wall.
@buildingwithjosh3 жыл бұрын
I used a 90° outside flashing that wrapped around the top and back of the ledger board. I did not cut into the siding a flashing, just sealed holes with clear roof pitch where screws went through the metal siding ribs. The window was already properly flashed, so I didn't worry about making water tight, just sealing to the metal siding where atatched. This question has come up from quite a few people, maybe I should do a short video on flashing and how I attached it?
