OK FAVORITE SON - another great design!! Thanks for using some of the rectangular steel tubing I donated. I think I might have donated the side cutter too? Several comments: 1. I wish I had a CrossFire for my projects when you were growing up!! What an awesome addition to any type of workshop. 2. Keep the originality of the old vice - Character and good memory. 3. Consider putting the roller jack up wheels on the LONG SIDE of the table. You will sooner or later, while using one of the vices, have a tendency to put on leverage on something you are working on that could potentially tip the table over. With the roller jack up wheels on the long side . . . they will give the table much more stability/anti-tip.

Yeah moving those wheels to the other side is a good idea. I do like them on the side I put them so I am not breaking my toes and shins on them. Ill consider moving them over to try it. Believe it or not the table is very stable even when rolling it around. I have yet to have a close call with tipping. Thanks for the tips Dad!

Love the Russ piece man shows people what kinda character you have man just found your channel love it . Been welding since Highschool than went to the Marines Reserve out of Omaha NE MOS was 1316 Metal worker . Went to a tech school for welding unfortunately didn't finish got deployed to Iraq in 2009 came back worked for a farm equipment builder orthmans as a welder, they build planter bars and such for John deer and has bars they build that's there own as well . End up getting laid off back 2014 as I was going through my divorce 😂 and than worked for a contractor a close buddy of mine for 6 months holding house from the ground up that honestly was fun . Now I have a awesome job on a class 1 RR as a welding foreman mainly do rail changes and thermite welding . We do weld on what you call frogs there part of your switch component made out of magnesium and other materials use a flex core specific wire to build the point up and wings . Other odds and ends we use stick welding 7018 6011 whatever they get is 😂 when welding crossing or gauge plates in a switch . Keep up the work man love the build hopefully one day I can get that plasma table for my shop . Just started building it up first welder is a Primeweld mig 180 my son I just got done building our welding table from some scrap from our lock weld shop way cheaper than buying a sheet of 3/8 or quarter damn that shit is expensive 🫰 . Turned out good son loves welding even though he knows I'm pushing him into the medical field . Planes on going to the Navy to be a corpman and hopefully ends attached to one of the marine units . This is from an old fabricator/welder, great design and layout. Leave the one side solid. The size of the table says it all. You have plenty of hold down on one half. I the real world of welding it takes experience and know how. I was reading the comment of not cleaning the metal before welding. Try hanging in a pipe leg of an oil rig welding off heavy angle for a scaffold and depending on good old 6010 to bust your way through the rust and crap on the inside with the ocean water rolling around like a swell. Once you get some solid ground established you can clean where you are going to put your support pieces. I've worked for companies in my early days that would through you out the gate if you had to take time to rake the flux and trash out of the way to weld, When your in a shop you can clean or prep your weld areas, but honestly, clean metal, no rust, no grease, freshly cut? Get your butt in gear and get it done. I'm 68 years old and I can still lay it in there. 40 years pipe and tube welder, instructor, CWI, fabricator and I started back in the day when we still used Oxygen/Acetylene Gas Welding to make a living. Maybe you should show your base when it's necessary to be sanitary and clean and when it doesn't make sense other to hit it with a file and a hand brush. My Humble Opinion, your one of the best in my book. I have no doubt the you could easily throw down 2 pieces of rusty steel and weld it together just as good as it would if you had cleaned it all up. Great build.

Those hold-downs are rad! I recently picked up a steel cart out on the street for free that I want to add some bells and whistles to. After watching this video for the I-dont-know-how many-nth time, I think I'll see if I can add a slot for those hold-downs. Because the table top is flush with the frame (no over hang), this will solve that problem to a certain degree. Pretty sure that a 5/8" drill and a steady hand with an angle grinder will get the job done. I also use diagonal cutters to snip welding wire so I'll make a holder for those as well. Thanks man for all the ideas you pump out into Tubelandia, and with pretty cool soundtracks to boot (most other content creators videos have soundtracks that...hmmm, let's just say I ofteb have to hit the mute button!).

Welder cart and weld table all in one. I'm going to have to rethink that for my shop. I'm for leaving the appearance of the Russ vice, but a new screw and jaw might be good. Great video, it looks like you enjoyed the build and after it all you have a great weld table.

Know the video is 2+years old but I would suggest putting the wheels 90 deg off on the long side to add to the stability of the table while moving around. Love all of your work so far, keep it up!

Thanks Jon, I use solid core wire with gas so I don't get a ton of splatter. I am thinking that I will make a file holder rack like I did with the pliers cradle. I use those files a lot.

New subscriber, working on my welding table this week and is similar to your, but to save space, going to leaf (via hinge ) one side 24in x 16in x 1/2 plate. Plate will have fixturing tapped 3/8 & 7/16 holes with milled Tee slots. Have a 16in face plate on a short delta drill base that my rotary fixture mounts to, so my table does require adding one to it. Nice job, and like how yours has fixing & jack rollers. I must consider this concept as well. My Everlast 256s and 3 ton arbor press take up top space, but the added 16in x 24in leaf will give me + 20in more work area. Thx for sharing, I will post our's when finished. I also like Jeremy Fielding's powered height adjusting table concept, but thats more fabing and weight added. Cheers, and will visit often, Bear

Hi Brian, Great build but with a small table it can help if you mount your vice into a receiver hitch. That way you can keep your top clear and uncluttered, or simply remove the vice if not required. I enjoy your channel. cheers mate

You may already know. But just in case you don't. When welding, it is best to not wear any jewelry especially gold or tungsten. There are many safety videos that will show you how dangerous wearing jewelry can be. I personally have seen a man's wedding ring cease itself to the bone . Just letting you know. Patina is cool, but I think you should do a Russtoration on the vise 🤠 Welding table looks great. I'd leave the one side flat, it'll come in handy. I'll have to send you a pic of one of my speed squares that I use for welding. There's a simple mod to trim off one corner so you can check square and not have a weld bead interfere with it. I've been missing out on the vlog, guess I need to step up my game LOL.

I think putting the wheels on the sides would have helped a bit more with the top-heavy-ness but it looks great. i've been looking at a bunch of welding cart designs with a table top as I don't have much room for both a table and a cart at the moment.

I don't yet have a table but I manually plasma cut and always have dross that I have to hammer/grind/flapdisk away. I always presumed it is due to 'I suck because I am new to this,' as I always see the KZbin machinist badasses pull parts off the plasma tables and they look like they've been laser cut, tumbled in ceramic media and glass bead blasted. Seeing you hammer and grind 1:07 makes me feel a little better about myself, because you're like a god to me. Speaking of gods, what would you like on the alter in my shrine to you in my shop? Beer? I just picked up my first welder. I got it barely used and it came with a table similar to yours and I'm thinking about incorporating some of your ideas. I have two 7" bottles for mig/tig as I have a multiprocess machine. Do you have any issues with sparks, debris, metals, etc falling on your equipment or hoses and doing any damage?

I think Russ would like to see his vise restored but not made to look new and unused. Many times less is more. Perhaps some rust removal, some splattered paint removal, a buffing for the handle, and an lube job would do nicely!

22:16. Need to keep your door unobstructed to replace wire, tension wire, etc. Also you should get yourself a new set of Mig plyers since they can be used to snip the wire and so much more. Nozzle cleaning needlenose, plyers to loosen tips and pull wire, and other uses. Like the table

Looks great it's a great design other than the magnets I have magnets in my shop and all they do is collect the grind and shavings and it's just like they just pile up and let's face it you can't do well then what I haven't grinded magnets are just not a good thing to have in fabrication shops or anything to do with grinding that just grab all the metal shavings

The hose hook you just welded on, is going to make getting into the welder to change wire or basic maintenance, unless you are going to slide out welder and sit it on ground, which seems like a pain.

Yeah youre right about that. I use the big spools of wire and never really change the spool unless its to add more wire. But you are totally correct about needing to pull it out to make that change. I think the design is still better than what I did have as far as space requirements go. Thanks for the comment Richard. - Brian

What is the overhang on each side of table top? After using it for awhile, do you have any issues with it being too top heavy like you thought? Awesome videos! Great work!

I think about 6 inches on either side. I can measure later. I have had no issues with it feeling top heavy surprisingly. I roll it around a lot also so there is much room for tipping. I am working on a new design that will improve a lot of things with this. Thanks for watching.

I'm 9 minutes in.... Holes on both tops is my vote. Get yourself some mig pliers and make yourself a magnetic mig gun holder. I store my pliers and chalk stick and carbide tipped metal scribe in the base of mine. Have fun !

Very new to this welding stuff, but couldn't you just bolt the welder down on a metal shelf for your ground to do away with the clamp when welding directly on the table top? I'm building a very crude cart right now and am wondering if I should insulate the welder from the cart or bolt it down... great video BTW.

The ground strap is different from the grounding of the welder. All of my welders are insulated from the cart they sit on and I assume that is by design. Hope that helps, and thank you for watching.

Great video, I will steal many of your ideas :) one issue though, at 23:30 - the hook placement. I don't see how to easily open the welder's door with that in place. As I was swapping between solid and flux, while working on my cart - converted from an old thick plate steel tool table last night I thought of that requirement - luckily I was setting up and still revising plan as I went though. As I'm sure you ran into this later, how did you fix it, or was it not the issue I am thinking it is?

I rarely ever change my wire out. I always use solid core. However all I did was pull it out a ways and it opens right up. The hooks are handy, but I think I would move them around next time.
