What an absolutely great lesson! I have been playing bass and other instruments for over 20 + years, I have always had a problem with speed. I have tried all the more traditional methods, really slow, metronome, just play fast, and while these methods have helped, I still had problems with fast passages, YYZ has alway been my downfall , among others, I could never figure out if it was my left hand or right! I have worked with this exercise for just a short time, and I cant believe it worked almost instantly! I know that may seem impossible, but I am guessing I had the speed for a while I just wasn't connecting the right and left hands properly! Great Lesson!!! I am playing YYZ at tonights show !!!

Great point, and you picked the perfect guitarist to make your point. Many can play Page's solos perfectly--and without his mistakes--but it takes a great guitarist like Page to put the feeling and soul into it like he does. Love Page:)

I was taught to play clearly and accurately before going any faster. I agree with your comment Lord Bassman. Accuracy first, then faster...and only as fast as what you can play correctly!

Hi mr. Devine, I've been playing for 4 months, I'm really confused. Do I need to put my non-playing fingers back the "down" finger, pressing the string down everytime? Let's say I were to do a c note with my pinkie on a scale, do my other fingers need to stay back pressing the string? Would it help somehow building up speed or it's just something I ought not do? Thanks a lot for the lessons, you're amazing!

Yes you can Luis.. Had extensive surgery on my picking hand (Fingers reattached and a partial fusion of the wrist) I used a pick until my hand got back to it's usual speed but found that the pick was something I wanted to keep in my arsenal.

Great videos, but i must ask the usual question (im sure everyone asks)... whats with the gloves? Do they help you fly around the fretboard or do they change the tone of the bass? Im curious, never seen anyone play with gloves.
@tanzlovar
@tanzlovar 11 жыл бұрын
Actually, you can easily see what he does on the fret board, it's not like he's playing a Paganini piece, is it? This is useful when you already know your fingering and you are not FAST and ACCURATE enough to play a passage. It does not tell you WHAT to play, nor HOW to play it. It tells you HOW TO PRACTICE. It's a phenomenal lesson.

Hey Scott. I just started playing bass a month ago and I've been slaving away at practicing technique. And I have been trying to play with 3 fingers with my RH. And I just don't see other bass players doing that. Is it a bad thing? Should I just practice 2 fingers? I mean theoretically I feel it is only a plus having another finger? Right?
@Raaaaaaaaaafls
@Raaaaaaaaaafls 9 жыл бұрын
It's neither a bad, nor a good thing, it's just personal style, you can achieve the same amount of speed with both techniques. Three finger technique is used on more percussive genres such as metal which require a lot of hits on the same string consecutively. Practice both techniques the same amounth though, and good luck.

Hey MATE!!! Need help!!! I already know how to play fast, but the problem is when I do some exercise in C major scale, the tone is not clear... How to fix that? Exercise goes something like this C D E F, D E F G, E F G A... I can play this exercise fast in all 5 positions in C, but that tone is pain in the a.. :D Hope you can understand, because my English is not so good...
