I've watched this video before, but wanted to see it again, and I'm glad I did. It's hard to retain all of the detail you give with one viewing. Your videos are a great resource. I've learned a lot from them, and continue to do so. Thank you!!!

The funny thing is I only buy Orchids that are looking like you just told us it should not look like. Only thing I really look for is pests everything else doesn't stop me from buying and all my friends know that so thats why I mostly get orchids that would be thrown away if they wouldn't give it to me. I'm totally okay with that because its cheaper for them and I love to help the orchids to get back to their best form

Your channel made me confident that I can take care of this mysterious type of plant. I chose a healthy phelonopsis from a grocery store with your choosing tips and i look forward to the rest of its blooms and its vegetative foliage. It has a cream petal almost covered with burgundy spots. Its green sepals give it a slight brownish undertone which I like with my decor. It is a lovely contrast to my other green houseplants.

Just starting my journey into Phal Orchids. Your videos are so helpful, thanks. My question is, should I repot my 3 inch orchid that I had purchased a week ago? The roots are tightly packed right now, some have rot but overall there's plenty of green healthy roots. It's currently blooming with 2 stalks and 7 overall blooms.I purchased 5 in orchid clear plastic pots in case it does need repotting. Do you suggest repotting newly purchased orchids? I bought mine at Trader's Joe

I have a phalaenopsis that has root rot. I took it out of the pot, removed dead roots, sprayed with 3% peroxide, and re potted into fresh media. I also put sphagnum moss around the pots rim to hold moisture. How often should I water? And how should I water? How long until I see results?

Hello. I am a new orchid lover. I have heard two philosophies about spikes that no longer have flowers. Is it recommended to cut spike at base or leave the spike intact? Thank you for your expertise.

Hey Danny, what time of year will my phalaenopsis start to get a spike? Basically, what time of year should I introduce it to the 17-18 degrees?

I came across a very beautiful orchid that I couldn't identify and it wasn't labeled in the store. the flowers were small ( 2-3cm at most) and very fragrant. and there were lots of them. I want to say it has a pseudo-bulb. any help would be great so that I can care for it properly

Hi Dany, I used 3% hydrogen peroxide to water two of my orchids a few days ago. I thought it would kill the fungus and provide some oxygen to the root system. However, when I checked today, one of them, which is still blooming, had some drooping flowers and a limp center leave. I looked at the pot and it seems most of the roots are dried and dead. I'm wondering whether you can advise me on possible reasons. I did have some slow-releasing fertilizer "spike" in the pot, they might have reacted with the hydrogen peroxide. But the other non-blooming orchid, treated the same way, looks OK. I repotted both orchids, but the blooming one lost almost all of its roots in the pot, how should I make sure it survives? Thank you.

I have a question. I purchased a Phal under a month ago that has 3 flower spikes, she has a total of 22 large flowers. The flowers still look great but the leaves have started to droop and cannot hold themselves up. They were fine till about a week ago. The media looks older but I didn't want to repot till the flowers were gone. You mentioned in this video that an orchid leaves can droop if there are to many flowers. Do you recommend I cut one of the spikes now to see if it helps her? Or would you recommend I go ahead and cut two of the three spikes or all the spikes and repot her now? She has beautiful unique flowers I really want to keep thos one alive.
@CptainShenanigans017 жыл бұрын
Hamster Trail's I would cut one spike if her roots look good, give it a few weeks and see if she bounces back and if not I would say cut a second and that may help. if the roots look bad though I would say cut all the spikes and repot.

I have an orchid that had flowers but after three months of getting it stopped to "bloom" (basically after I bought it) then the flower stem is still there looking like it will flower someday, however the little baby circle things that look like a future flower do not grow (I havent touched it)... it is because of lack of fertilizer? Ty

you forgot about the ones that come potted in sphagnum moss. my mini came in sphagnum I should have inspected it better at the shop, half of the roots were not even attached anymore :( I have two healthy roots left so I hope I will be okay. BTW is there a reason why dried sphagnum is used and not live sphagnum as that has antibacterial and antifungal properties.
@katherinec10037 жыл бұрын
Most of the mini's I've seen are in sphagnum since they would dry out too fast in bark media. Sphagnum isn't necessarily bad, you just have to know how to water it. She did mention you should check the root system, and I think that should apply no matter what kind of media the orchid is potted in. Of course, you can't see the roots that are inside the media, and that goes for any kind of media - bark, sphagnum, or anything else. There's always a chance the roots on the outside will be fine, and the roots on the inside won't.

Live sphagnum is EXTREMELY difficult to keep alive for most people. I struggle to keep the terrarium I have for my baby nepenthes humid enough for Sphagnum...

What if part of the root is dry and brown but the rest is green, there seems to be a small green tube in the dry part of the root so perhaps that's what keeping the rest of the root alive? It's a pretty long root, it's green so it's probably still functional, should I cut it?

Hey. Could you do a video on how to prevent pests on orchids indoor during winter? I moved all my orchids indoor due to cold weather. I just found out that one orchid has some very tiny white mite looking insects covers the leaves and flowers. I separated it from the rest, cut the flower stem, and used hydrogen peroxide on the whole plant. I hope she is the only one infested. Because it is winter and the house has heater, it has very low humidity. I used a ceiling fan and humidifier. But I don't want my whole collection infested with pest.

Ida Garrett bet you’ve learned a LOT at this point. How’s it going? I almost always buy the clearance orchids at the grocery store for $1. I just lucked out this past year with a community pot of 2 mini phals, both fairly healthy but done blooming. One just opened its first bloom yesterday and it’s a multiflora “girl talk”. A huge score for 50 cents. As you can imagine, there’s about 30 more buds coming, and a second phal, from the same pot. The second has not spiked but has thrown a new leaf and 3 new roots. I’m hoping it’s a different multiflora, but if it’s identical, I’ll still be happy. Been buying the clearance orchids for years and it has been a great way to learn. Without Dani’s videos though, I’d be lost! I tell everyone I can to watch her videos for the best advice on keeping orchids. She covers everything.

so I had a question. I just reported my phal a week ago, i had to get rid of some dead roots and I noticed that her leaves where a bit limp. not by a lot but enough for me to notice. I did put her in a new kind of medium and a larger pot. is it possible that the leaves are limp because of the stress of the repotting or is it due to her roots? I don't want to panic and I know these things take time, but I'm worried that I've ruined her. thanks.
@CptainShenanigans017 жыл бұрын
I should also note she is still in active growth and has no sign of a spike coming yet. she is just starting to finish up on her second new leaf of this growth cycle.

@CptainShenanigans017 жыл бұрын
chuanhui yan if you are buying it for the color I wouldn't. orchids don't naturally come in blue. so the next bloom will either be white or a light purple. but if you aren't buying for the blue color then go for it as long as it's healthy. I don't get the blue ones mainly because they are overpriced for a color that isn't natural and won't return.

MissOrchidGirl, I just purchased a phal that I thought was at the end of the end of its blooming cycle. She looks to have 70% good roots and 30% bad roots and I want to re-pot in a better, airier pot with better medium (currently in sphagnum moss). I noticed, however, that the orchid has flower stalk growing from the first nod that has grown to about one inch now. Am I safe to re-pot and clean out the the roots without shutting down the flower spike? Or is sacrificing the flower spike for the best? The leaves and stem look great and she has about 8 nice, firm, green leaves. Thanks!
@CptainShenanigans017 жыл бұрын
Fabdanc I had this same problem and I tried to repot mine. the stress instantly caused my orchid to drop all her flowers. I would say sacrifice the blooms for the plant. besides, from what I have read orchids can bounce back faster in a new pot during active growth. meaning after the flowers are gone since it can focus on root growth. hope that helps!
@Fabdanc7 жыл бұрын
Blooms... sacrificed. I re-potted the orchid this weekend and the roots were misleading! Many more had suffocated in the moss than what it looked like. So now I have some very young roots on a very big plant that is now in bark, Hopefully it gets going on root production.

I keep all my orchid in water constantly, never let them dry out , they are in constant flower, I keep them on my kitchen window sill and in draft, I do not give them any special treatment as they are very hardy , the flower size is as big as the Palm of your hand, I have told all my friends how to look after theirs and they are well happy. So I class myself as an expert on growing orchids successfully, and ignore all these so called experts
