I did the same thing to an old off road only Toyota I had. Lock cylinder was destroyed. Switch still worked and for some time I had it screwed to my dash with a key head JB welded into it so I could turn it. Worked like stock as it was the stock ignition switch. I finally ditched it in favor of switches and buttons as I added more stuff and needed more switches. I did mine DIY style as I had access to all kinds of switches and buttons. I ended up with a single master switch for all vehicle power and a key button for the engine crank. Even had a simple metal panel sitting in place of stock radio everything mounted to. Wish I still had that truck...

Speaking of hotwiring. Due to a very bad starter.. for a while a vehicle that it is not cared for (nor driven) at my work had this procedure of starting: Put the contact on (and shift to neutral - manual gearbox, also the parking brake was not working too well), open the hood and there we had laying around the solenoid wire and the starter wire.. so touch the solenoid wire to + and then touch the starter wire with plus. after that release the cables and tuck them back into the makeshift insulation out of a hose. Did that like 10 times by now in the past two years. (the car does not require MOT as it is driven only on private property of the company.. big enough to actually drive. It also doesn't have plates)

How many total wires does the ignition have?
@StrangeGarage6 жыл бұрын
Oh, sorry, you answered that. Obviously the 2 hots are intended to power the other 4, so you can determine the specific circuits by pulling fuses and seeing which wire goes dead, then wire it up accordingly. You can use jumper wires to distribute the power from one hot to multiple switches, and my guess is one hot wire is only for the starter. Easy peesy

You're just diverting the electricity from the factory switch to the switch panel. Basically copying the existing circuits and moving them. So your factory ignition switch has a contact for your starter relay, you just move those two wires to the push button. Same for the rest of your circuits. You just need to determine your continuity with a meter, exactly like I did in the video. You'll get itm

Did you use a ground from the the original wiring on ignition cylinder,, or just put an additional 1?

With the wiring, could one wire the starter, ignition, and ac, etc to one button? -question from a noob
@StrangeGarage6 жыл бұрын
21 krystals Short answer, you need at least 2. Otherwise the starter would crank forever and ruin the starter and/or flywheel. If you mean one switch, which I assume you mean use one switch and still use the push button to start, then it is probably possible, but I wanted to avoid overloading the switch with current. Running too much power through one switch could risk burning it up. I guess that wasn't a shirt answer was it?
@21krystals806 жыл бұрын
Strange Garage also, how did you attach the wires? Did you solder them or just use electrical tape?
@StrangeGarage6 жыл бұрын
21 krystals I should do a video for ya my man. I used crimp on connectors: butt splices and fork terminals.

Mhmm is there a way… well there most likely is, but is there a way to have another switch installed somewhere to switch back and forth between the key and buttons?
Not even gonna lie, but I ran across this by looking up how to bypass a starter solenoid for pb start on my Mitsubishi 3000gt and deadass just learned how to Hotwire a car

I have the switch in my 2003 Chevy blazer but I still have to turn my ignition with for my truck to kick over or it it just try’s to turn over how do I make it where I don’t have to use the box
@StrangeGarage6 жыл бұрын
Ok, so you hit the button and the starter turns the motor but the engine doesnt start without turning the key?
@timothyhall8426 жыл бұрын
Strange Garage so this is how it happened so I was at work and misplaced my key so my dad broke the ignition column and took the box out that the key turns and we bypassed the security and used the box to start it. Then I wired the push start to the box and I have to keep turning the box which has some of the power to the truck the switch turn on the rest of the power but right now without the box I’m the stuck won’t kick over
@StrangeGarage6 жыл бұрын
You need a multimeter man. You need to find continuity from the ignition switch so you know where the wires need to go, just like I did in the video. Determine the hot wires, then determine where the power goes via continuity at the switch. To be clear though, will the engine move at all, or is the engine doing nothing at all?

Strange Garage I have the Panay hooked up and it works great the engine tries to turn over I just don’t know how to make the power on the Panel my kill switch

What horn is that? Is that an electronic one or is there an air tank?
@StrangeGarage6 жыл бұрын
Adam Daley It's a straight up Firetruck horn. I got it off a freightliner, but it's an "emergency horn". It runs on 90PSI so I totally need a compressor to run it. I have an install video on my channel if you want to see how i did it.
@AdamDaley16 жыл бұрын
Right that was what I figured, a compressor/tank was involved. Im trying to find the loudest non-compressor or instant air horn. I have one on my truck now which seems to be the louders I could find that does not require a compressor. It has a small built in one that is instant right to the trumpet. Does the job although if I can find one better, without the air tank, great. I have electronic air horns from emergency vehicles but wanted more of a semi-style horn
@StrangeGarage6 жыл бұрын
They make fairly large airhorns with satellite compressors that run on 12v. The compressors only kick on when you hit the horn so there is no tank and they only cost about $30. I had one before this, it wasn't bad. If you get a big enough one it should be similar to what youre looking for. Mine is literally perfect, it's everything i ever wanted! The look on people's face is excellent!
@AdamDaley16 жыл бұрын
I'm running the Wolo 845 Road Warrior with a larger 808C compressor so it's instant on. Largest direct driver compressor they offer (18-21PSI). Does the job for me but still wish it was more semi sounding (but i'd need a tank for larger trumpets)
@StrangeGarage6 жыл бұрын
Adam Daley Makes sense. It was about $200 For my setup, are you more worried about the money or finding a hiding spot for the compressor? Mine is pretty small.

Is it really a good idea to have two red buttoms one for the horn and one to turn off the car, right next to eachother?! Arent you afraid to accedently turn off the car when reaching for the horn buttom?
@StrangeGarage6 жыл бұрын
The button doesnt turn the truck off, it only turns it on. The red switch turns it off. So no worries there.

How did you bypass the antitheift devices on the truck?
@kevincofield38565 жыл бұрын
You don’t. You stick the chipped key in the tumbler so the transponder senses the chip and doesn’t deactivate the vehicle. But use the push button to start the vehicle. Think of it like when push button cars first come out. The chip reader picks up the chip is within range then the car can be started.

What are your thoughts on installing a turbo on a minivan.
@StrangeGarage6 жыл бұрын
Dylan Garcia Really depends on the van. If we're talking old school e350 or a express it would be cool! A Caravan or freestar just isn't made for that kind of power, so it would take massive cash to make it reliable. Unless were talking a lite tune, but your transmission still won't hold up long cuz they already dont. That being said I would totally do it, I just need the funds to make the project feasible.

My only key for my vehicle is broke, I was hoping to do this button start with mine. How do I stop the steering wheel from locking? It's from 2001 and I'm worried about it. It's nice security thing, but its complicating this for me.

Hey man I am trying to do the exact same thing on a 98 Chevy blazer I bought it off the fella he lost the keys so I tried getting the ignition out and ended up breaking the ignition housing so I just want to bypass every bit of it and put a push button start on it but right now whenever I try to start it like you did on the Ford truck so I sometimes it works sometimes it doesn’t could you please give me some insight on what the hell I’m doing wrong

How do I do it if I don't have a key... 86 camaro...i know once I drill the lock or cut wires I will find the keys
@masonhoyle78576 жыл бұрын
i tried wiring in the same panel into a 1990 Volvo 240 and it worked for a little while but then the car started showing signs of losing power to where it wouldn't even crank unless I used a wrench to connect the circuit on the started then it showed signs of not charging the battery. did you run into anything like this or might have an idea of how I could have fixed it? I pretty much wired mine the same way.
@StrangeGarage6 жыл бұрын
Mason Hoyle If you're confident that your wiring is sound then start with the basics. Battery terminals, battery, adequate ground It could even be a bad starter or a worn out push button. I would start with battery/connections
@crosivis86746 жыл бұрын
Could you do it with one moment switch or no?
@StrangeGarage6 жыл бұрын
crosivis Yes, the big red button is a momentary switch. Just have to make sure the correct wires go to the appropriate circuit.
