you left out my favorite way of catching queen ants: black lights. i attached a black light to the fixture outside my back door and hung a white sheet behind it. so far this year, i've caught tetramorium immigrans, pheidole sp, camponotus pennsylvanicus, camponotus castaneus, acorn ants, and lots and lots of moths. i've also observed praying mantis and centipedes and spiders that come to the black light to feed on the various insects. pretty amazing.

Damn, it hasn’t been raining much in July so no luck for me, but I found a few queens back in February and May.

Don't worry. Rain is not a necessity, it just ups the probability. It can be a moist day witout rain too

Yes, Tetra are very inconsistent - I always find only single Queens wandering around... never experienced a real, massive tetra nuptial

Not sure why but i found none... I feel like my neighbourhood had a pest control take over since im unable to find any queen ants this year
@AntsVienna4 жыл бұрын
That sounds sad but could absolutely be true. You may still be able to find some late-flyers from a Lasius species though ;)

I live in the woods with no sidewalks, how do i look for queens
@AntsVienna4 жыл бұрын
Try to look for "openings" on the ground. With openings I mean spots with no grass for example

@@AntsVienna thank you
@AntsVienna4 жыл бұрын
Though you can spot queens in the grass it's hard to do - even for me. So look on grassless areas, any wood brances lying around, on bigger stones... All these things provide a good contrast, which makes it easier for your eyes to spot Queens. Wish you good luck! Let me know if this helps you catch any Queens.😉

AntsVienna Bro! Something really cool happened! I followed your tip and went down to my local Fotball pitch and trained. And in my backpack I had a container. And on my way home I saw something moving on the ground right in front of my house and... it was a queen ant! Many maybe 40 or so crossing the road. I ran in and got my test tubes and got back. Now I have 3 queen ants and 1 colony wi5 workes. I don’t really know which species but I think Lasius Niger. Because they were a little bigger than my Lasius flavous queen and black. But I really hope that one of them is tetramorium. Do you want me to post a video on my channel or them so you can get a closer look if you are interested?
@antsireland12614 жыл бұрын
hold up how did you identify it as umbratus i think you mean lasius cf umbratus as you would need a microscope to get it 100% correct

This happens quite often sadly... Natural selection of nature. However, if we ant keepers find such Queens we can still help them live "happy" lives under our care. :)
