These outdoor lights are a beautiful addition to the outside of your home, but what good are they if the bulbs are blown out? Don't worry. you can do it yourself and fix this problem.
The most common complication when doing this job is a screw that is rusted or actually snaps off.
Then, if anyone asks, you can say YES Sir, I did do it myself.

This video is 7 years old and I'm soooo glad that I came across it. I was ready to rip my porch light off. I looked all over it and even saw the screws but didn't know what they were. I have been letting it slide because every time I tried to do it, I coukdn't figure out how to get at the burned out bulb inside. I noticed the bolts, but they seemed to be part of the assembly, and I didn't think they would loosen up. Makes me feel proud that I fixed it myself. I'm 73 and living on a fixed income. So these things count!

My lamps look almost identical and the paint on the stucco looks like my house. In fact except for the glass being frosted it looks almost identical (except one problem) there are NO nuts or screws where you describe. I see no possible way to drop down the bottom to change out a light bulb on these horrendous lamps which were attempted to be repaired by the previous owner. I guess replacement of entire lamps is my best option at this point.

Give your friend a Robertson screwdriver and watch the confusion ensue. Problem with these lanterns is that no one even tried to open one till the bulb goes out so there's confusion as to what shouldn't be turned versus what's simply stuck and of course how every one is different. Also, on our 36 year old house, it's often plastic not glass, at least in the less ornamental ones on the rear of the house and sides of the house and my parent's broke the plastic panes years ago trying to change the bulbs. Another bulb that you need to work out how to change is the one in the hood over the range. My parents cracked the plastic cover trying to remove it. Turns out that plastic tabs on the sides needed to be unclip and then it had a sheet metal top which slid off a bracket by pulling the whole lid forward. It was quite unintuitive and several electricians that my parents had called for other work couldn't figure it out, the rivets fastening the top metal sheet to the plastic had them convinced it could not be removed without drilling out the rivets.

Sometimes if they won't loosen with a dose of WD40 soak,dry it off and get your hair dryer and maybe an extension cord.Plug it in and point the dryer at the portion of the where the screw is in the housing.Heat it not till it's molten red,but then attempt loosening it after heating.Most times it will loosen.Heat causes the metal to swell thus allowing the set screw or screw to loosen.

I have lanterns with dusk to dawn control. I can't find a NON incandescent bulb that will last. LEDs don't like the switch on and off. A CFL doesn't like under 20 deg f. Any suggestions?

Silikroil works better than WD-40 for loosening corroded threads. Also, Use LED bulbs instead of those crappy bulbs like the ones shown and you won't have to change bulbs!

In my case, the nut was rusted and stuck, and when I tried to remove it, it was broken and stuck inside, and the visible head is very small. Is there anyway to fix it? I want o avoid buying a new lamp fixture. Please help.

+Tarek Faham ---> Take a drill and drill the rusted screw out. Once you do that, it should come apart. You can then find a new screw and carefully fasten it back. Make sure the new screw is not too thick. That metal cracks easy. The new screw will cut its own new thread into the metal.

Also, see if it's possible to use a small nut and bolt after you drill it out. that would be better, but if your application won't handle it, just a screw would be fine. coat it in a little oil or grease to prevent it from rusting again. "Never seize" will work. Or you could probably get away with Vaseline.

jakeguitar01 I drilled both broken screws and now one the hole is slightly wider than the other. It's going to be a challenging task to find a suitable matching screw for each hole. I'm just thinking if I can insert some material to force the new screw to fit tight in the new hole? The screws I have are either too big to too small.

Awe shoot mine has 4 bulbs. My mom told me to go change the out door patio light. I was like, hey this was easy got to the tools went up to it. And then the stupid thing wouldn’t unscrew with my unscrew tool. I used, my hand but maybe I’m not doing it hard enough sense I’m tired. This house is 1 year old. So I wouldn’t assume the bulbs would be rusty. But maybe the bulbs has been there longer than the house.

I hope you didn't literally throw away that CF bulb -- they contain mercury, a powerful neurotoxin. You can bring bulbs like that to your local Home Depot or Lowes (probably, any hardware store), to drop it off for recycling. Thanks for the video. I'll need to change mine tomorrow a.m.
