This video will show you how to change out a typical circular saw blade. You'll also learn how to determine when it is actually time for a circular saw blade change, rather than relying on the saw blade's appearance (which can be misleading).
Tool List:
--Circular saw (mine is a 7-1/4" Makita)
--7-1/4" blade (Diablo)
--13 mm wrench (supplied by manufacturer)
Steps:
1. Unplug the circular saw!
2. Trigger circular saw brake mechanism (by pressing the small tab, usually located near the blade guard and in line with the arbor)
3. Set wrench on arbor bolt
4. Pull counter-clockwise
5. Loosen and remove bolt and washer
6. Remove circular saw blade
7. Insert new circular saw blade, with teeth pointing up at front
8. Reattach washer and bolt with wrench (clockwise)
Always be careful when changing circular saw blades! The carbide teeth on new circular saw blades can be fairly sharp--consider wearing gloves when handling.
In general, you'll know it's about time for a new circular saw blade when you can hear the saw's motor bogging down in cuts. Also, wood will splinter worse than usual as the circular saw blade passes through the material.

My dad made furnature when I was little and my mom made many things in my house when I was young, but now I just got out of college and want to make my own stuff so I dont have to buy it. My mom has passed and I dont have contact with my dad, so this was so helpful since I was too young to use the saw when I was around them. Thank you!

Never had to change a blade on a circular saw before, any time I used one it was always someone else's. Started to do reno's on my house today and I was struggling to figure out why the bolt kept spinning and not loosening. Glad to see it's as simple as a locking mechanism behind the blade! I feel like a doof now. Thanks for the helpful video :)

I bought my first circular saw brand new and it was time to put the blade in. I couldn't get the bolt to come loose. I thought no was doing it wrong. That's why I came to look at the video. I eventually took it to the shop and they loosen it up for me. Even they were surprised to find how tight it was. Anyways thank you for sharing your knowledge. I just wanted to share this story with you all. Cause I am very fond of wood working and this is my first attempt into woodworking

New Makita saws use a reverse bolt. Left to tighten, right to loosen. You were probably trying to continue to tighten.

Thank you! I just got a Hyper Tough saw & I don't have any real experience with power tools. This helped me change my saw blade. One tip for others: that spindle lock is tough to press down & keep in place while loosening the other side - until you're comfortable with it, best to make changing blades a two person job (esp if you're not a carpenter). The Hyper Tough saw blade likes to be rotated clockwise before loosening, until it catches.

Thanks Michelle! You’re right, you really have to wedge your hand behind the guard on most circ saw models. It can help to set the saw on something waist-height and brace it with your hip so you can pull back a bit. Just make sure it’s unplugged first 😅 Good luck with the new saw, and be safe!

Thanks! My 5 1/2" blade radial saw has less clearance than the 7 1/4" radial saw in your video. I thought I was doing something wrong because I couldn't get the blade to go straight in. After watching your video it became clear that I had the right idea, but some very gentle maneuvering was required to maneuver the blade up and across the bolt housing. After that, it slid into place. Thanks for the video!

Nice video and thanks for sharing! It would have helped if you would have mentioned about what to do with older circular saws (like mine) that do NOT have that locking button to make the blade not spin when trying to change it. (I have to use a piece of lumber touching the old blade teeth so the blade will not spin when I try to remove it and when I install the new blade.)

Thank you for the video. I had a question. I was looking at bosch circular saws and blades. How do you know the diameter of the blade will fit the saw? The bore diameter is listed as 25mm or 25.4mm and the bore diameter of the blade is listed as 30mm. Would they fit together? would I need a ring? or is the difference too big for a ring? If I want to measure which bore diameter saw blades I can use with a circular what part do I need to measure? Thanks for all your videos, they are really helpful in explaining the details, and I get the courage to buy and use the tools to make things.

@@magicharry17 Gotcha. That's a great saw (Makita just makes the best circular saws in my opinion). I actually went out and checked mine--it's an older model obviously, but I saw the flat and raised parts of the inner washer. I had the raised part facing in, but I actually just changed it to face out because the recessed side seemed to fit better that way. You may want to consult a manual or even write Makita, but for what it's worth, I've cut about a million board feet with it the other way and it's never fussed. I'd be inclined to thing the tool is pretty tolerant either way so long as the outer washer and nut are tight.
