How to CHANGE OIL on a DURANGO R/T

How to change the oil in your 2011+ Dodge Durango R/T with the 5.7 HEMI.
What You'll Need:
5W-20 Motor Oil (7 Quarts) (I use Mobile1): www.rockauto.com/en/moreinfo....
Oil Filter (I used Mobile1 M1-113A: amzn.to/3AbPF9O
Oil Filter Wrench: amzn.to/3fxm2aV
13mm Socket with a ratchet and 3-6" extension or 13mm Wrench
Gloves (the ones I use): amzn.to/3A7dv6i
Oil Drain Pan: amzn.to/2VvStiM or amzn.to/3jlHGjy (I use both, the pan to catch and then the tub to pour into and take to the autoparts store to dump)

Yeah - my 2012 R/T gives me an oil bath up to my armpit when removing the old oil filter. On newer Durango models, Mopar wisely moved the oil filter up just under the hood. Use a quality oil filter (such as Wix). Twice, I've seen the Fram oil filters leave the oil filter gasket stuck to the engine. Check for that before putting the new filter on or you'll have a mess when starting it up. After I pour the new oil into the engine, I tip/lean my "empty" oil bottles against a wall for 15+ minutes. Afterward, I can pour every last drop into the engine. Great video - easy to see and follow. Thank you!

FYI prime the oil filter, add oil till it’s full that way it’s not oil starved on start. Old school thing we used to do, but still good advice.

Spring cup oil filter wrench is better. It connects to a 3/8 ratchet and allows you to get into tighter spaces

It took me an hour to get the oil filter off. The person before me had it on there so tight and that stupid guard in the way didn't help either.

Its not a guard. Its actually a little spout so you loosen the filter and let the oil from the filter drain. It runs off that little ramp.

Awesome vid, I’ll soon be doing my first oil change on a ‘15 RT I just got with 23k miles. What’s the purpose of rubbing the oil around the filter gasket? And did you need to jack up the Durango or was there enough ground clearance to just slide underneath?

I’m thinner so i could get under without jacking but you may need to jack it up for ease of working. The oil on the gasket just helps the seal

It depends on what you need really. I had 3 ford trucks before this. I’ve always needed a truck, or so I’ve thought. But I just weathertech mat and lay the 3rd row down and all my tools and ladders (i have extend and climbs) fit it with no problem and i still have the 2nd row. Plus this is awd so it handles great in the rain and snow. It just doesn’t have as high of clearance and a truck and I can’t hall dirt or mulch in the back like i could a truck. Gas mileage is better though and its faster and better looking than a truck lol

Add a crush gasket for the oil plug on the list. Replace every time. Also, check old filter to make sure old gasket is on it and not stuck on the block so u don’t accidentally double gasket it and leaks like a sieve. Be thorough man.

Is this for every vehicle? I’ve seen them but never once replaced them when putting the plug back in. Have NEVER had one leak. I could see some vehicles absolutely needing it though.

I'm still looking for the best way to take the oil filter off without creating an oil spill that would make BP blush. Haven't figured it out yet. I've used a bag over it with some success, but I swear that whoever said, "let's put this thing at a 45 degree angle with a 5 inch long threaded bolt to attach to" has a special place in hell assigned to him/her.

Should try the 4th Gen Ram 2500’s… oil filter has to get turned 90 degrees to slide out thru the fender well between a space that’s barely even bigger than the filter itself… can’t remove it from above or below and it needs a cap screwed on the top otherwise it’s a real oil spill… but anyways hammer a small punch into the bottom of the oil filter to let it drain first before removing from engine

Cut a 2L bottle in half and keep the half with the cap (on). Loosen the oil filter and then slip the cut end of the bottle over the filter. Then squeeze the bottle to grip the filter while you unscrew it the rest of the way. The bottle will catch the oil filter once it frees up and the oil that drains out, keeping your hand and undercarriage clean.
