Changing a faulty (noisy) wheel bearing hub on a Ford Transit

Can i just say, if you are watching this to get an idea of how to do this yourself, then please realise that it is not as easy as this! That disc looks brand new, so this guy has either been horrendously lucky to get a transit in for a noisey wheel bearing right after someone has fitted new discs to it, OR, more likely, he has already removed and refitted the whole assembly includin discs and carriers and calipers and pads, and just showed you how to take 5 t50 torx bolts out and a 36mm nut off. Which came off really easy btw, Dont use any kind of air/battery gun to remove those torx bolts, they will likely shear off. You have to first apply handbrake. Loosen wheel nuts, loosen 36mm hubnut, chock front wheels, jack up rear, and insert suitable axle stands on flat level surface. Remove wheel. Using an impact t50 torx bt(1/2" drive)insert bit and firmly tap the end of each torx bolt with a suitable hammer. Gently, with a long power bar, start to turn each bolt anti clockwise and remove, by all means use a batter/air gun to remove all blts once they have been started. Release handbrake.Remove both 13mm caliper bolts, remove pads, remove 2 carrier bolts 15mm, remove 36mm hubnut and then withdraw disc and hub as one, taking care not to damage abs sensor. If you are only replacing discs you may need a press or other suitabe separating tool to split disc from hub. If you batter the hub or disc to shock them apart you risk warping the hub and or disc. If you ar down this far it is advisable to replace discs, pads and hub bearing. It is alot easier. Replacement is just a reversal of removal, however i normally bolt the hub to the disc and install it together. Hope this helps anyone doing this job, as it is not as easy as this guy makes it out to be! Please refer to manufacturers torque settings for all nuts and bolts.

I'm this far down!I I've gotta replace all.never done this before and I'm in agreement with your comments..everything is gonna be tight.those torx 50's ain't coming out that easy! I think mine has 36mm hub bolt. Thanks for your insights

I agree with this. My compressor kicked in 3 times just removing the 36mm nut. The disc was sezied solid to the hub and needed the spare wheel method and the impact gun to separate it.

You can say that again!!!!! Iv just done one of these and it was the hardest job of my life!!! The 36mm nut wouldnt come off with a power bar OR impact gun so I applied a lot of heat... eventually 15 mins later the nut started to come off...... only to find out it slipped on a thread and completely threaded the spindle!!! Great.... so next thing i removed the torx and then attempted to remove the hub by giving it a few chaps with a 4lb mallet... no joy. I then heated the hub right up for 20 mins and chapped when on the heat.... no joy.... I then got a hilka bearing puller and put that on and used a strong bar as leverage.... 5 mins later I had a completely sheared puller !!!!! Up shit creak knowing that I can't even take the van to a mechanic now im sitting thinking about how to do it.... 3 hours of using a 230mm and 115 mm grinder I literally had to carve up the wheel bearing and chop it down into bits... THATS NOT EASY TRUST ME!!! I burned up 6 discs doing it. Then I half the disc and broke that off with a hammer drill..... then I had to actually cut the out race in half with the 115mm grinder and chisel it off to eventually gain access to the spindle bolts and mangled dust sheild.... have needed to replace the spindle, spindle bolts, abs sensor, discs, hubs and pads.... trust me, unless you are patient and not in a hurry to use your vehicle this job is NOT for the front hearted. Iv never been so happy to now be on the rebuild with new parts now... and that's just one corner!!! Iv ended up spending £900 on parts alone without labour!!! Good luck and prey you get one as easy as this guy has made it out to be!!

We are doing both out rear ones. Right hub came right off like a dream. Left one wont budge, have tried for two days now… what a hassle!!!!

Amazing how easy you got the hub off!!! there's tons of videos here explaining what a pain it is & how to get over it & you just tapped out with a hammer💚🇬🇧🌱

And also, the drivers side brake caliper is wound back clockwise, and the passenger side anti clockwise, and when refitting, the notches in the piston have to be level with the pins on the back of the pads. Some vans have wear indicators on them some dont.

If you find the hub/rotor won't come off after ruining several purpose built tools and 3 cans of penetrating fluid assisted by at leat 200 blows with a 15kg hammer. I suggest removing the spindle itself. Removing the spindle retaining bolts, (just behind the brake disk) 18mm spanner required, proved to be a lot easier than trying to remove a shredded bearing from the vehicle. Just get a new disk, hub, Washer 4709302 FORD, and 4 M12x35mm Rear Stub Axle Bolts OEM 1764259. Chuck the old assembly in the bin.
