TORQUE SPECS First bolt undone was shock absorber to wheel bearing housing bolt 21mm, torque spec 180Nm (you loosened this abnormally easily) normally a breaker bar is needed. 2 - 16mm bolts shock absorber top mount to car body 50Nm then tighten a further 45 degrees (an eight of a turn more) 16mm single bolt connecting shock absorber to mounting bracket is 25Nm.

Haha yeah that 1st one is no joke used the standard jack and a spanner to break it loose didn’t have space with a breaker bar

I've just done this job. I wanted to get my electric impact onto that lower shock bolt, and so by far the easiest way was to jack up the outer end of the lower control arm slightly to relieve the tension, remove the 18mm bolt and nut that attach it to the knuckle and then gently lower the arm. That gets the spring completely out of the way and so you get full access to that 21mm shock bolt with an impact. It only adds a couple of minutes to the process and can save a lot of potential frustration.

I've done this to a Skoda Octavia, (essentially the same) and the coil spring gets in the way of the lower bolt. I used the exact same method of levering the spring to make room getting the bolt out, but he makes it look a bit awkward. Lever and unbolt at the same time IMO. If you're doing this on the floor jacked up, like most home mechanics, you can lever it and hold it with your knee (because you're squatting down), whilst your 2 hands are free, Sounds odd, but it makes sense when you're doing it!

I’ve only had to do it twice when I lowered my golf and lowered it even more, but why wouldn’t you just lower the control arm and not struggle.? I live in the rust belt and I was able to swap both shocks and springs in maybe 25 minutes.

@@Slammedeth10 Like loosen/remove the top bolts and let the control arm down to where you can reach the lower bolt?
@dunebasher1971
@dunebasher1971 11 ай бұрын
@@JL-gg7ph Put a jack under the outer end of the control arm, and remove the single 18mm bolt and nut that hold that end of the arm to the knuckle/wheel bearing housing. Then gently lower the jack. The arm will swing down, taking the spring with it, and then you get full access to that 21mm shock bolt - I put my impact on it and rattled it out in a few seconds.

I am very glad you make these videos. Are there torque specifications when tightening the bolt? As i don't have an impact wrench, only hand tools.

Thank you for your feedback! Unfortunately, it is hard to specify the tightening torque. You can find this information in the Repair Manual for your car. Best regards, Autodoc.

When inserting the lower shock bolt & after the initial tightening of the bolt, you raise the vehicle & further tighten the bolt. What's the purpose of this step & how much higher do you raise the vehicle to complete this step?

Better get that corrosion taken care of before your control arm starts to buckle. I own a MK5 Golf also, and it seems they're very prone to underbody corrosion unfortunately.

Mine is 12 years old and it is even rustier than this on video (we have snow on winter- salt on road, and for 10 years it was kept in warm garage...). I don't know how you would take care of all of this corrossion, maybe just to lubricate some spots, otherwise is a waste or time and resources (rust converter, primer,...).
@WeRemainFaceless
@WeRemainFaceless 6 жыл бұрын
I suppose it depends on how bad the corrosion is. Mine weren't too bad, so a wirebrush to remove loose rust and a quick coat of POR-15 worked well for me. However if its perforated and you have rusty holes, you'll probably need to replace the control arm as it will likely affect the rear alignment. They're not expensive though (~£40 each side) have a look on the auto-doc website for the part.

That has to be the most over complicated design I’ve ever seen..I really don’t get why they would do this. I’ve never had to KZbin how to remove a shock until my vw golf..the 100 or so non German vehicles I’ve owned you could simply figure it out by taking a quick look and only a few minutes.
