I changed the oil and filter on my bike a couple months ago. Saved myself a hundred bucks. Crazy to think an oil change on a motorcycle would be so expensive.

I ordered filters and engine oil from Fortnine and did the job myself. The dealership wanted at least $200+ to do the job which is insane. I went full synthetic and did it myself for about $100 CAD or maybe a bit less. The filter I bought was Fram PH6065B (chrome, $13 CAD). There's a black version too. Getting the old filter off was a b!tch. I saw a trick on YT that helped me a lot. I put a 4" gear-clamp around the filter and used a 3-arm ratchet-handle-driven filter removal tool. Without the clamp, the tool would just slip. The clamp has the screw-gear on the side that the 3-arm tool can grab onto and then turn the filter. Even with that, I could only turn it maybe a quarter-turn at a time before it would hit on something. I had to loosen the gear-clamp and turn it a bit and tighten it again and then wrench the filter another partial turn. I got it eventually. Dunno who was the mechanic that put that filter on last time but damn it was super tight. Since then I bought the HD filter removal tool. It seems sturdy. It was only $18 on the HD Canada site (Part Number: 94686-00). I haven't tried it yet but next time. I'm doing my own oil changes from now on. It'll save a lot of money and I won't be welding the filters on like the garages seem to do. Another trick is to make a oil-catcher out of tin foil to catch and direct the filter oil out to your drain-pan. There's plastic troughs that you can buy, and those are great but pretty expensive so I've been using the tin-foil trick and it works just was well. Also, instead of filling the transmission by taking of the large derby cover, I take off only the little primary-chain inspection cover (2 screws) and fill it through that using a small funnel.

yah $200 for that work is definitely insane lol. I just finished doing the oil change and yeah never going to dealership to get that work done again. I used a similar 3 prong clamp to get the stock old filter off but I could see how annoying it would have been if you didnt have an universal clamp. I did end up making a mess when the oil filter came off lol - you will see soon... I think now I need to work on my brakes and brake fluid but that seems a bit more advanced :S

Great timing on the vid! I did the oil this weekend on my 08 883 and it was quick work and probably saved myself a couple hundred dollars. I also thought about doing the plugs since I'm not sure how old the current ones are and you video popped up! 👍

awesome! Got any tips on the oil change? lol Im gonna tackle it this week
@fjbyedone1731 Жыл бұрын
@@KSMotoCafe Not a mechanic, so I watched a couple of YT videos beforehand. Do a short ride to warm up the oil, and then let it cool a bit before you start draining the oil out. You can also stand the bike up to get out those last drops. Place old rags under the bike before removing the filter as some oil will come out of that hole; avoid leaving a small puddle on your garage floor, like I did. Run some oil around the lip on the new filter and hand-tighten it in place. When you're done, do another ride and check the oil level; top it off if needed. The oil change kit at my local HD dealer runs $70, which came with 4 qt of oil (3 for engine and 1 for the primaries), an oil filter, and new rubber O ring for the primary cover. I'm holding of replacing the primary oil for when I replace the clutch.

You get the gap clearance out of the manual and best to use a little antisieze on the plug thread's. Nice video.

Any time I thread steel into aluminum always use anti seize on the threads. Silver works well.

that step was definitely recommended but... I gambled it lol

@@KSMotoCafe not worth the gamble. I've seen aluminum threads come out stuck to the steel part. That was an extreme case though. Better to be safe than sorry.

Do NOT use that type of gap gauge on iridium spark plugs! It is way too easy to break the thin center electrode of the iridium plug with it.
@eldonmaurer478 ай бұрын
Ok couple issues with your vid....first off you never measure the old plug gap to apply to the new plug because the gap changes on used plugs. Look up the correct gap. Second, you NEVER use a dial feeler gauge to gap Iridium plugs, as the electrodes are brittle and will break. Last tip is to always use anti-seize on the plug threads when installing.

And remember to reduce the torque values by 25% when using anti sieze
@XenaTheQuadCamBikah Жыл бұрын
Use the hole on the gapping tool to adjust the gap larger. You’ll mess up the thickness of the tool by doing it on the measuring portion.

I put new NGK Iridium plugs in my '09 XL1200C a couple months ago (NGK Iridium IX Spark Plug 6046 - DCPR7EIX). I ordered them online from Fortnine since I'm in Canada. Dunno why but the HD Canada site lists the plugs (some with Screamin' Eagle on them) but you can't order them online, it says _"dealership only"_ which I think is pretty lame. Anyway, they were easy to install and the engine does run better. I hadn't changed them since about 8 years ago so they were way past due. I don't understand why, but in Dec. 2022, these plugs at Fortnine cost $10.77ea and now in July 2023, they are $20.99. That's insane, tell Fortnine where to shove that price. They are available elsewhere for much less.

It's not recommended to alter the gap on iridium spark plugs considering the center electrode is rather delicate.
