Great video and clear. I would advise half filling the oil filter housing to reduce starvation during initial start up. Also open the old filter to check for debris and evidence of component breakdown or failure.

Two good tips! I actually did check the filter but forgot to include that footage. I was making a video for the oil pan at the same time and I’ll be showing it during that video. Didn’t realize it didn’t make this video until you pointed it out.

I believe you can push the throttle to the floor and turn the key. The car should recognize that request and just turn the engine over without starting. This should do the engine oil priming process. After a couple of goes like that, just take your foot off the gas and then turn the key to start like normal.

Fantastic guide, thank you! After the oil change, I believe you can push the throttle to the floor and turn the key. The car should recognize the request and just turn the engine over without starting start. This is to prime the engine with oil to prevent a few seconds of minimal lubrication. After a couple of goes like that, just take your foot off the gas and then turn the key to start like normal.

Not that many pitfalls if the car has been well cared for. I've had my 986, second owner, since 2007 and only minor/typical things that wear out. I did do an entirely preventive IMS upgrade, but otherwise, just follow the maintenance manual. Great car, enjoy it, and this is a great channel!

I love how the 986 oil filter isn't obstructed by anything else. On the 981, it's obstructed by the subframe making it a real pain in the ass to take out when doing the oil change! The 986 has a dipstick!? Don't understand why they took it off the 981..

Great video as always. Loved the comment about Dinosaur oil - reminded me of the time I asked our diesel generator expert if it was OK to use the 30+ year old oil stored in the basement storage tank for our huge commercial diesel generators or should I buy new oil now for the oil change, and he told me that it will be just fine as it was only crushed up dinosaurs :O)

Hey man don't know if you'll see this comment but I just have 1 question. I have a 99 Boxster I'm about to do my first oil change on myself. From all the video's I've seen, it looks like the drain bolt and oil filter housing are reverse threaded, except one video I saw showed it opposite. Do you have to turn them clockwise or counter clockwise to loosen? I think from your video it looks clockwise, but just want to make sure! Thanks!
@HelpMeDIY11 ай бұрын
+@xclear1874 not reverse threaded. Lefty loosey. Let us know how it goes!

@@HelpMeDIY also hahahaha I just realized, I was thinking about it from a head on view looking at the ratchet, I took a second to think, if I was under the car looking at it, that is counter clockwise/left, I'm just very much so overthinking this!

As usual Aaron watching you’re video for guidance as I’m finally just changing oil on our ‘98 too. We’re going for a ride tomorrow before it gets too cool … is that even a thing? LOL! I’m wondering if you are considering doing an under-drive pulley on your ride? Apparently close to a 10 horse gain with this alone …

Did the oil filter part# changed? I went to local Porsche dealer and they gave me 996-107-225-53 oil filter for my 2000 Boxster. Is that one the replacement for 996-107-225-60 mentioned in the video? If I go to Porsche website and put the 996-107-225-53 it says this doesnt fit my 2000 Boxster, so I am confused.
@HelpMeDIY4 ай бұрын
+@niksprojects not sure of those specific part numbers but they do often supersede parts. Most Boxster/Cayman/911 filters I’ve had have been interchangeable. Call Porsche back and ask.

Can you use a oil extraction pump for over fill?
@HelpMeDIY2 жыл бұрын
+Jon McClane Good question, but not to my knowledge. There is a long filled tube that goes from where you put the oil in to the engine.
@jeremyocampo15292 жыл бұрын
Can I use a normal carjack and lift the 986 from one of the suggested points to jack it? I just bought one, and I'm the one who will do the regular maintenance.
@HelpMeDIY2 жыл бұрын
+Jeremy Ocampo you CAN, but there are a couple things that wouldn’t be ideal. You ideally will change oil with the car level on all 4 corners to help all of the oil drain out. Also, if you are only jacking from one place you won’t be able to get a jack stand under it and would be supporting the car with a jack, which is not safe if you will be crawling under the car.
@jeremyocampo15292 жыл бұрын
@@HelpMeDIY well I got a low profile jack one of the good ones. I can just jack up the Porsche take out the drain plug and filter and lower the car so it can be lever so all oil can drain correctly. I have worked on my moms Toyota Sienna with the same jack.

Hate to be that guy, but, If there is any metallic debris in the oil filter or used oil, it has almost certainly come from the balls within the bearing, while any fragments of black plastic may have come from the IMS bearing seal. Both are signs that the IMS bearing could be failing
@robertputnam273711 ай бұрын
It could be the tangs from the oil filter bypass valve at the bottom of the oil filter housing that broke.

Just a quick question. I've been using Mobil One in my 2000 S and have read about using a higher grade of oil in the older cars. Have you had any problems with using 10W-40. I'm in W.V. by the way.

@HelpMeDIY4 жыл бұрын
+96conv yes it’s the 5000lb one and YES it’s absolutely worth it. I use it way more than I ever thought I would. Works on my other car, wife’s car, friends cars when they bring them over, etc. It makes lifting the car a non-step. I can’t imagine working on a car without it now.
