Hey friends, thanks for being here. I though I’d film my string changing process for you before I head off to the ENGC Community Jam Session today.
I think I covered everything and more. Please excuse my chopped off head in the video. I was trying to get close to the action.

I think the first time I changed strings was 1973. And yet I watched this entire video. After I have the new strings on and stretched pretty good, I pull each string up out of it's nut slot, and use a pencil on the slots. Especially the wound strings. I find it helps. There are only three Guitar Players on KZbin that I watch every video. You, Uncle Larry, and Tim Pierce. If you start doing those "Why this is (add a mediocre Band name here) best song" Or your comments on the 'Top Ten' list, I'm gone. But if you continue making the great videos I've come to enjoy, I will be here watching and stealing little tricks. Thanks for that. Much respect...

Thanks. Enjoyed that. Youre right about the meditation thing. Anything to do with a musical instrument, even changing strings is meditational and good for the mind. I just did so yesterday. The thing about it is, when changing strings or just playing.. nothing else can enter your mind except what youre concentrating on. Old worries and yesterday go out the window for as long as your dealing with the music issue. Personally, I always feel the benefit afterwards. No negativity for an hour or 2 is a healthy thing. No time or space to worry about worry. Thanks for reminding me.

One of the best tips I was given when changing strings, especially on a guitar with a Bigsby, trying to hold the tension, is use a capo at the first fret to hold the tension. Then winding the tuners is easy. And using an eraser to hold the ball ends on the Bigsby pins to keep them popping off. Thanks for your videos, GT, I feel like you and Tom are the greatest hangs.

I just love you Guthrie! I’m gonna go out on a limb here and say that I really think one of the most powerful lessons you have to teach has absolutely nothing to do with guitar at all. You are a living example of how truly being yourself shines through in the way you play! This seems to be one of the most overlooked missing pieces in the music world, and you my friend are bridging that gap like a boss. I can almost guarantee that you would never have reached your profound level of playing if it weren’t for your honest, genuine, and truly self expressed nature. When we see an artist cut through all the bullshit and really lay it all bare, that is what makes us all connect. That is what we all strive for on the deepest level. Combining that with hard work, and the essential fundamentals of music is what truly makes you a leader in this arena! I think we should all be thanking you from the bottom of our hearts for steering music back towards what really matters, so that the spirit of music itself can thrive in a world presently full of so much noise. RESPECT!

Mr GT, in no way am i taking anything away from fantastic people who have all that slick production. But for many of us, it is the straight ahead, simple, honest videos that people like you and Uncle Larry share that is so engaging. Your approach meets everyday people hungry to be better musicians right where we live. Though i watch all kinds of guitar videos, the ones that i always watch are yours and Uncle Larry's. Thanks for staying the course.

Today I learned Guthrie is a little bit crazy. I like him even more now cuz a little bit crazy is a whole lot human. I kinda thought the oil from your skin would destroy the strings faster but it makes sense that it would keep the strings from binding at the nut. Tom Bukovac showed a tip a day or so ago about how to check if your strings are binding at the nut. The things I learn from these guys is incredible. I even sound better when I play now. 🤠

I own a signed poster sized drawing made by your cousin Sarah that she made for a school project when she was a little kid. It's a drawing of a little baldheaded kid and was tacked to the wall in Jim's basement in the Trapp Fest days. With Jim acting as her art dealer, I negotiated a price of $35 for it. It's a surrealistic masterpiece. People stare at it and ask me if it's a Picasso or something. I think I'll will it to you. It would look great on your wall. Danny P.

Prayers for your uncle, GT. The nose lube thing sounds nuts, but I'll try it. Speaking of uncles, my uncle inspired me to play at a very young age. He'd put his '46 es300 on a bed and let me touch it. He's long gone, but I have that guitar and play it often. Its 3yrs older than me and still plays and sounds like "buttah".

Thanks for the tips! Not sure why one string at a time though. On my Tele, I like to take 'em all off & gives me a chance to wipe and grit of the fret board before putting new strings on. Don't worry about neck tension in the 5 minutes it takes to change 'em. It's a Telecaster. You can drive nails with it and it'll still stay in tune:)

Although I was aware of most of the tipps, there's still and always something new to learn, which I love (this time about the little push down near the bridge end and that natural oil thing, which sounds totally plausible to me! I'm going to try that from now on). The pegs on T-style guitars differ from those on ST-style or LP-type ones, so it'd be interesting to see, whether you had a cent or two on locking them in for the winds on those other guitars as much as possible. (I go through the perpendicular hole, make a right angle bend near where you clipped them, so we'd have to add half an inch to the amount of excess string, lock the upward sticking end with the first wind, the rest like you showed us here, meaning going _under the first_ wind with the rest of the winds, so the string makes an angle from the saddle. Any excess string past the tuning peg I cut as close to the peg as possible so not as poke my fingers when tuning) Loved to hear your stories from the neighborhood and community and hope, your uncle is doing better. Love that woodwork of his, really cool! Thanks a bunch!
