Hey everyone, welcome to my oil change video for the 2.5 5 cylinder Volkswagen engine. These instructions are the same for the New Beetle, Golf, Jetta, and Passat. It is also close to the same procedure for the 2.0 Engine in these vehicles as well from 2005-2008 or so, and this is a 2008 model.
The oil I would recommend is LiquiMoly Leichlauf 5w-30 or the factory run Castrol. Make sure whatever oil you use meets the specification VW has for oil. This engine took 6.3 quarts of oil, and yours may be different. Always consult your owners manual just to be sure.

Good video, one thing I don't get it why not clean out the oil filter housing with some parts cleaner or something? Throwing a clean oil filter into a filthy oil filter housing just makes no sense. Same with hitting the housing base with some parts cleaner as well.

great video thanks so much ! i have literally the exact same beetle that’s in the video funnily enough which is great because it’s kind of hard to find info specifically for the 2.5L beetles since they’re not as common as the 2.0L

Pro tip. If you regularly use the drain valve on the bottom of the filter cup, it will start to leak over time. Not a bad idea to change the cup every few oil changes to stop any seepage

Correct. I wish they would have used a removable plug like the VR6 had. Those were much more reliable.

Thanks for nothing Mr.B! Now my best friend (wife) wants a lift in our garage! Ha!!! She just got a '70 Beetle Sedan to compliment her '09 (2.5L) New Beetle and she wants to start doing more of her own maintenance again. We're both retired aircraft maintainers and miss it...to a point. Thanks again!

Love the video but maybe focus a little more on the crush gasket around the drain plug. I buy 20 of them at a time from my local VW dealership and there is a front and back to the crush gasket that determines how it should be seated on the drain plug before re-installing it into the oil pan. Great video, thank you for posting it. 😊

I am getting ready to change the oil & filter on my niece's Beetle-great info for me here. What size is the crush washer for the bolt? Would a Honda washer fit the oil drain bolt-I've got a whole bag of them-5 different Hondas in the family and I am the go guy for oil changes...LOL..

Hard to say, they just give me one when I get the oil filter. If it isn’t in too bad of shape you may be able to use it. Thanks for watching!

what is the 2nd o'ring used for? on my car i have that one you show inside the canister but then they had a second one on the unit on the engine up against the flange. you do not show installing that one. also should the canister turn all the way onto the main unit all the way to that flange if there is not o'ring in that spot? mine gets half way on and it gets hear do turn and it will not go all the way up to the main flange

Hey Mr. B, Can you tell me if the check engine light would come on if the oil is low in my beetle. I just bought the car, and low behold the engine light turned on. I looked at the oil level and it looks like its at minimum. So I went to get the oil changed and the tech looked at the car and said the oil filter area is leaking and to have it looked at by a mechanic. After watching your video here, I'm wondering if that nipple is leaking. Let me know what you think on the light. Please.

Great video. What hose were you wiping the oil from, after you installed the new filter? Just wondering.

Brand new cup and the nipple leaks. I hate this car. Is there a upgrade filter to replace this stupid filter housing assembly?
