Here's the sad part about modern engines, many do not account for belts breaking. It's like the engineers have an anger issue with people and want their engines to crash when a belt breaks. The solution is simple, put valve reliefs in pistons when making them. DUH.

A compression test would reveal bent valves. Although those engines are super easy to replace timing kits . Prolly should have replaced it a little sooner

Except you cant run a compression test the conventional way with a broken timing belt as you'll just do damage, thats why he did it the way he did.

Hey So I was driving my prelude and belt snapped due to some plastic piece getting stuck in between anyways I was going about 20mph after I heard something hard hit I pulled over quick and just towed my car home opened valve cover and saw belt missing so I replaced it and it stalled as soon as I started it up what can it be bent valves maybe bad timing?

I have a Honda Civic Type R (ep3) 2003 and two weeks ago i switched off engine as normal and went to turn it back on and engine turned but wouldnt start. Tried everything,bumping,towing,everything. Local garge towed it away and got auto electrician out. chekced fuel, and sparks. We couldnt understand why she wouldnt start as all seemed well. Timing however had moved, so i got a new Timing chain and tensioners,guides,etc. After this car still wouldnt start!. So we stripped head and checked valves. The valves were all fine so we cleaned them and seated them properly. Car started!!! trouble was the valves werent sat properly and there was no compression. I got a new head gasket and so now im good to go for another 100,000 miles.A joke really and small job although labour costs were very costly. Cost me over 1000 ukpounds. If your car doesnt start but turns over ok check timing then valaves. The valves might look ok but make sure!.

Recently I discovered that timing belt is not that visible serpentine belt and it has to be changed before you see signs that something went wrong. The car is 1.4 tdi with 216k km on odometer and original timing belt. I took a peek at it, the color is washed, it doesn't have cracks on the back side and doesn't look like it might snap but then looked closely at the teeth and saw at the base micro cracks. I ordered a belt kit and have to wait 1-2 weeks till I'll change it. I'm still using the car and wondering, can the belt last another 100k km or it might fail tomorrow 🤔😓😓😓

Check the leakdown with both valves closed. Remove the rockers if can. Have a machine shop to do the valve job only. Ring and valve job goes together. Those rings are shot!! Put in oversize rings the next oversize. File them down to minimum gap. Install inserts on head bolt holes. Replace the rod bearings and oil pump etc.

Will the crank shaft or connecting rods suffer any damage?i was travelling at 60 mph in my ford mondeo diesel when my timing belt snapped
@dnlmachine42878 жыл бұрын
+moedem Cranks and con rods are usually strong compared to pistons and valves. You can check piston travel and height by putting a degree rod (basically a "soft" stick with marks along its length) in the glow plug holes, then turn the engine by hand. Measure and compare the stroke and height of the rods lift for each cylinder. IF the piston stroke is consistent: When each cylinder is at the top of its stroke, push down sharply on the top of the piston with a hard plastic stick etc. while watching the degree rod and listening for click or clunk noises. If the piston drops or makes noise suddenly....it could mean a broken or spun bearing, or a cracked/broken con rod. Do not confuse rod/wrist pin or bearing play with normal up/down movement of the piston. You can also remove the oil pan, and shake or rap the bottom bearings and/or con rods with a nylon mallet. The bad bearings will rattle or move slightly if they are considerably worn. If the stroke and height is the same for all cylinders, with no bearing/wrist pin play you should be good. If the stroke is the same but height is different you may have bent con rod. If the stroke and heights are different....yikes, probably a broken rod and/or a broken bearing. Stay gold.

+dnl machine your comment gives me hope that my engine isn't completely done for. A mechanics apprentice misaligned my timing chain and now the engine wont start even after correcting the alignment. Since the cylinder head needs to be removed anyway to replace the valves, can I just need to stick a ruler in the cylinder and see if all pistons have the same height at bottom dead center?
@dnlmachine42877 жыл бұрын
Will the engine be removed for rebuilding? If so, take the long block to an engine machine shop and they can check all tolerances, measurements and motions for damage. If not, or if you prefer to check yourself, you can measure the stroke with a precision ruler in the cylinder right on top of the piston crown and a FLAT straightedge laid along the top of the cylinder bores. Measure multiple times, top and bottom of stroke. Just past Top Dead Center, try push or tap the top of the piston down - if it moves a lot that could mean trouble. If you can get a Dial Gauge, mount it at the top of the block and set it so it jussst touches the top of the pistons. This will help you see deflection or looseness, especially if you spin the engine like I describe below. Check the edges and center of the piston crown. Take great care to keep debris, dust etc out of your cylinders. When you are not working on the block, cover the tops of the cylinders with stout plastic and tape. IF the crank turns nice, and the strokes are the same height/depth and travel, you can spin the engine with a high powered drill (1/2 inch) to listen and feel for slap or looseness. Put a socket on the crank pulley nut, and turn the engine slowly at first, then a bit faster, faster etc. Be sure the cylinders are lubed and watch out for oil spit/spray. ONLY turn the engine in its normal rotation direction. Listen to and feel the block for any noises. Use a screwdriver or stethescope or microphone to listen for noises. Any clanking, clicking, knocking etc means there is need for further checking. Usually removing the oil pan and doing what I described in my first comment. Hope this helps, Stay gold.

hi mate, I did my timing belt and thought i was careful with the timimg but I guess due to the turning of the crank ttying to get it undone I must have missed the mark. I never got it running but I did try to start it maybe a dozen times while trying to fault find, only turned the key for a second or 2 each time. What do you think the likelyhood of damaged pistons would be? Is there an easy way to check? Thanks
@gregh74576 жыл бұрын
depends on how far off you had the timing. if only 1 tooth or maybe 2 it might be ok. You should have turned the motor over by hand a couple revolutions before trying to start it to see if anything was hitting. If your engine is non-interference then no problems hitting valves.

Bob O I have an 03 outlander. I changed my timing belt myself. It never broke but it's an easy job if u are inclined. Simple metric tools and torque wrench is all that's needed. U can put it back in time and install belt. U will know immediately if it bent valves. From what I've been told is it's 50/50 on damage or if it's good. If not the head is easily available in most junkyards as it's a very common engine. Hopefully it's an easy fix.
@TomO-if7nh6 жыл бұрын
Chris Johnson Thank you for the reply. I let the timing belt go 7 years since I last changed it, so I think that's why it snapped. There was some engine damage. Some places wanted $7,500 for a rebuilt engine. I didn't do that. With the engine damage, it was beyond my knowledge, but I found a very good local mechanic.

@timthemechanix7 жыл бұрын
The nicks don't affect anything. Unless you have a Kia Rio, I haven't seen enough piston damage done by valve impact to affect the running. I've been doing timing belts since they've been making them. 3 Kia Rio's I've seen with broken belts exploded all 4 pistons.

I did the same test on this 2004 Pacifica that didn't brake the belt but the water pump had a busted plastic propeller and the tensioner pulley had lost all it's bearings and was just spinning on the bolt. I loosened all the rocker arm bolts and used the hose from my compression gauge and 175 lbs of air. No noise air from any cylinder from exhaust or intake. I just threw on new pump, tensioner and belt. It must have just threw the timing off enough to lose compression and wouldn't run. Will do an actual compression test in the morning now that the belt is intact, see what happens before putting it back together. Good video. I just used my regular air nozzle and pushed the rubber end into the end of the compression hose quick release male end. The air only lost pressure where the pressure pushed the connector loose from the hose fitting. No noticeable air from intake or exhaust. It's the Chrysler 3.5 V6. This is the first video I've seen doing this test, so thanks. I did this before I saw the video, but it's nice to see relevant information posted. Thanks.

The mechanic at a Shell Gas Station screwed up the job. He said one of more valves was bent. He admitted it was the mechanic's fault. At first he said he was going to fix the bent but it would cost him over $1,000. Now he said he would replace the whole engine. I am quite sure he will just order an engine from a junk or scrap yard. Do I have any repercussion against the mechanic.
