I teach on the side for a coding bootcamp. I'm among the few teachers who hasn't gone through the bootcamp itself and instead is coming from a more traditional computer engineering education. First of all, when I see how good my fellow teachers are, I can already tell that in the long-run the bootcamp does prepare you to learn things on your own and grow as a professional. In the short term, I see many of our graduates being incredibly talented programmers and often they find a job a few months after the end of the program. As you said, it's incredibly tough and challenging, but it's truly impressive to see how much stuff can be learned in 3/4 months with the right guidance. Of course, many things can also be learned on the internet using free (or almost free) resources, however, just because of the sheer number of resources out there, it's really hard to choose the right ones. Plus, as far as the students say one of the greatest added benefits of the bootcamp is being able to bounce off issues and ideas with fellow students and teachers.

No offense to David, but the university-affiliated boot camps are deceptive. They’re all taught by Trilogy Education Services without accreditation or university instructors. Borrowing the university brand name for almost entirely independent programs is disingenuous and encourages the students to dishonestly leverage the brand: David is **not** UCI alumni with rights to the UCI "network & prestige". It's somewhat disturbing how many reputable universities have become accomplices. EDIT: Trilogy Education Services, not Triology.

@simisani moyo I was looking into UNiversity of Washington bootcamp a few years ago, which I didn’t find out it was a trilogy bootcamp until a few weeks after I made a down payment. I had a scholarship I was awarded from my prior job, and I thought it was really weird that they wouldn’t accept it. I did some digging, and found out that trilogy was running the bootcamp, not UW. I also read as many reddit posts I could find about trilogy and their were a lot of mixed/negative reviews about trilogy. The fact that they wouldn’t accept my scholarship was the biggest red flag for me. I ultimately dropped out before the first day, got a full refund, and decided to go back to college instead. I currently have two ish years left. Not to spook you or anything, because there have been many success stories of youtubers who went through bootcamp a and got jobs, but weigh your options of bootcamps or even maybe a college by doing research before committing

I applied to the UCI bootcamp administered by Trilogy Edu Services, now i'm so glad they put my application on hold cause I haven't been "communicating with them" enough and due to my "lack of activity" moving forward to secure the payment plan/ financing. it seems like they just want to twist your arm into the program without giving you time to do some research. I took the assessment test which they said will determine if I am cognitively capable of completing this program. I got a 20/20, but still, i am not sure if their tests are really there to measure my cognition or just a gimmick to make themselves seem more legitimate.

One problem I often find when attending a course where other students have previous knowledge on the matter, is how impatient and discouraged they become because of the difference regarding the speed in which other students with zero knowledge have when it comes to learn new stuff. I came to realize that’s best for me to try and stay away from that type of classmates because it just opens a window to conflict. The problem is that most of the times they put you in groups to work on a project so you can develop a fundamental skill which is teamwork. When you can’t avoid working with others who are just better or learn faster than you, just try to be clear from the beginning that you’re gonna do your best by saying and supporting it with effort. At the end of the day it all comes to focusing on bettering yourself as a developer and always remembering that each one of us have our own time frame to understand and apply the knowledge we are being given.

There is actually an advantage when people coming from a different industry into software engineering. It is their domain expertise, and when they apply it into software engineering, it really boosts them by a lot. For example, a software engineer who is also a payment fraud expert is a gold mine for fintech, making them really shine above the average. So what we should do when pursuing software engineering is strategically focus on what domain we already have exp in, and conduct a career plan which targets it specifically.

it's interesting to hear how different things are over in murica-land. Over here in Europe such bootcamps almost don't exist. At least not in or around germany. You'd mostly apply on college courses. Personally I would say that learning online / on your own is one of the best ways to get started. Programming is something that sort of needs to become your hobby. if it's not, you're falling back day after day. But if it is your hobby you can become very proficient in your domain and you'll be able to get a lot of job offers. Find something that you enjoy, be it frontend, backend, ios, android, web or general application development. Do it a lot. And you don't have to become great, just do it a lot.You'll learn a lot and you'll understand the basics - like really understand. Doing this part-time this probably takes about a year or two but after that time you'll have lots of options ahead of you as you'll be a very good junior dev. And companies LOVE junior enthusiasts.

That's a very good point! But I actually disagree that such bootcamps don't exist in Europe. I live in Berlin as an expat and there are many coding/data science bootcamps in Berlin/online or within Europe. My very good friend did a coding bootcamp in Berlin and is not working as a junior backend developer. Some developers at my previous and current company also were hired from bootcamps in Berlin.

In Deutschland gibt es eher Traineeships. Wo du im Job lernst and dafuer bezahlt wirst. Man kann sogar nur mit einer Ausbildung als Fachinformatiker Anwendungsentwicklung bei einigen Beratungsbuden starten. Als Junior soll man lernen. Allgemein soll man immer lernen, um relevant zu bleiben. Seniors hassen Leute, die Theorien, Paradigmen und Technologien nicht lernen wollen. Sorry, my German is not good when I am writing bilingually, I hope I will get my point across. In Germany, there are rather traineeships, where you learn on the job and you will get paid. You can even start with just an apprenticeship in Application development. The primary concern of a junior is to learn, generally, you should always learn to stay relevant. Seniors hate people who refuse to learn theories, paradigma and technologies.

I think the operative phrase is career change. As a college dropout, it didn't do shit for me. However, my peers who all already had a career, or at least a degree, were able to make the switch, if that's what they ultimately wanted. Luckily, I chose a comparatively cheap program. I decided to bite the bullet, take out the loans, and pursue an applied mathematics degree this coming fall. I am hoping long run it pays off in some way, but I am not sure how because I already forget a shit ton other than writing basic functions, which I could already do beforehand.

I didn't make the proper research while looking into attending a coding bootcamp in Tokyo and entered the wrong program, lost lots of money and was told I don't learn fast enough, that I wasn't allowed to be part of the senior project and that if I complained too much, they would make sure I'd never get a job in tech in Japan. I checked a few websites where alumni make testimonials for bootcamps and noticed that most of the testimonials were from former students who ended up working for the Bootcamp afterwards, guess it says it all. Had to make a loan and attend another bootcamp that I just concluded last week and already have a job offer being negotiated for a remote position. Don't get lured by these "too good to be true" "silicon valley style" bootcamps, talk to former students, lots of them if possible and if you feel something fishy in the air, reconsider investing your time and money on it.

UC Irvine bootcamp is a bootcamp partnered by Trilogy. After doing a lot of research, I found out that Trilogy's quality is subpar and only uses these universities' names for recognition. If you're looking for a coding bootcamp, please stay away from Trilogy (they have partnered with a lot of universities like UCLA, UC Berkley, Columbia, UPenn, UT Austin...) and similar companies to it.

A few issues I’m having and can use some help- I currently own a business and has strongly declined due to covid. Not sure if it will pick back up. I know nothing whatsoever about coding, but know it’s a very big industry with decent salaries. I grew up with computers but never dabbled in anytime of programming or coding. I’m sure if you research what the best courses are on those platforms for what you want to learn you’d learn something worthwhile. I know on Udemy, a lot of the better courses have mostly good reviews and they are updated regularly but make sure you wait for the sale price or google promo codes to get the $10-20 price, I wouldn’t pay more than that. The best courses have assignments/projects connected to them so you can practice what you’re learning and then use google and docs to fill in the missing pieces.

My experience of coding bootcamp is you learn one language. Then you go to the job market and employers want 3 to 4 languages and 2 years experience. I regret doing my bootcamp with Lewagon. A lot of money and little reward. My advice would be to study coding yourself. I've applied for 70-80 software dev jobs and got 2 interviews. The other problem is there are many hoops to get through. Sometimes 4 interviews.

I graduated from a coding bootcamp and I had a good few classmates who were fresh grads from software engineering. I know it really benefitted them since Bootcamps teach you the fundamentals to getting a job, and they already had the theoretical knowledge from their degree. It definitely gave them the upperhand. That being said, if youre considering doing it, probably better to do it after finishing your degree rather than during, since bootcamps are super intensive and most expect you to treat it like a fulltime job (daily 9-5 in class or more)

Right now I'm in University and doing self learning. What I learn in class is just not enough so I just try to expand on what I learn in class but obviously it's a lot easier to pick things up because I have already learned about them. I use my professor as a safety net to ask anything I may be stuck on. I'm just trusting the process and going along with the stuff I'm learning here. University is super pricey as is, can't afford a bootcamp

You don’t need a college degree, some don’t even require any experience but I’d suggest that if you want to make the most out of a boot camp, choose one that requires some knowledge, those are more rigorous and you’ll learn so much more! I wish I started even DURING high school! I haven’t started one yet but I will soon!

Some jobs require the degree and some don't and some jobs that do require a bachelor's degree still sometimes hire people even without having a computer science degree depends on the company. Doesn't matter if you got a bachelor degree or you graduated from a coding boot camp don't be afraid to apply to jobs you can still get a job.

I attended and graduated from Lambda School and it was one of the best decisions I have ever made. I attended the part time Computer Science/Web Development course (which is completely remote) so that I was able to work my normal 8 hour job, supporting myself while completing the course. It took about a year and 2 months or so. I developed several notable projects both solo, and in groups ranging from 3-7 that served as portfolio projects to show to potential employers and to pad my resume. In the 4/5 months leading up to graduation I started applying to jobs to get an idea of how my resume appeared to employers, and to gain experience in the interview room. Nearly a week after graduation I had an offer. Many people I knew had offers BEFORE graduating, and there are plenty still searching for a job. Tuition is in the form of an Income Share Agreement, where you don't pay a dime until you are working a tech job paying 50K or more. This is great, because Lambda is invested in you. Their paycheck is reliant on your success. If you don't get a job, they don't get their money so they will push you even after graduation to improve your skills and create more projects. Lambda has a ton of resources available for students. If you don't have a laptop, there are ways to get one to use. If you need extra help, you have your Team Leader or Instructor Hours. All lectures are recorded so even if you miss a day or two you can still succeed. You have opportunities to become a Team Leader yourself (which they will pay you for) and will put you in a leadership position which is amazing experience for your resume. They also keep up to date with the constantly changing features of coding/programming. I can look back at the current syllabus now, and see that there have been many changes to the curriculum. If you are searching for a boot-camp, I implore you to put Lambda School on your list to research. It changed my life.

Mayuku herself attended bootcamp to get into her career. The thing we want to know is if we invest all that cash, hopefully we can have a great ROI (return on investment) at graduation or after. There’s a lot of them now out there. I believe the best way to prep yourself is do self teach from online resources, then get into a bootcamp. Both ways will help out a lot so you can work with others who are new or experienced at coding. Very helpful when everyone also being challenged so you can ask your cohorts. It’s very possible to become a jr web developer! 📚

Actually, learning on a trainee is better than trying to learn in a bootcamp. Getting paid while learning is better. Actually a dev should never cease to learn. I am a jnr software engineer in Germany.

It’s possible to develop on a smartphone but it’s way too complicated to try and develop in it and it’s just best to invest in a laptop honestly

Yes you can study business and software engineering. There is actually a degree called Bcom Informatics or Bsc Informatics that pairs software development and business into one degree.

There are a lot of free resources like in KZbin you can find channels that teach coding. Khan academy is free, there are also books you can get for beginners. That’s how I’m starting before even going into a bootcamp.

The right answer is you don't need any Bootcamp!!! For once, boot camps are businesses and this is a pure marketing video. Of course, you gonna struggle more by learning by yourself for free but it's such a learning curve for the real-life situations when there are no boot camps neither when you land a job, you will find yourself googling solutions exactly the same way you started to learn to code for free
