Choosing a filter for a pond is not always straight forward.
Hopefully we can help you make the right choice for your pond.
It certainly was a laugh making this video.

Some good points about filter selection with a lot of different options covered. I have two gravity fed Eazy Pod filters connected to diy moving bed chambers and two diy upflow filters running on my koi pond and they work well. I recently installed an OASE biosmart 5000 on my quarantine tank (shown on my most recent video) and am happy with it so far. Both Evolution Aqua and OASE make quality products...well worth the money.

This video was far more complicated than ever to make and I don't think we even started to cover all the things I wanted to mention.

Hi Lee. How are you Sir? Fantastic video for young up coming hobbyists it will definitely help them. I much prefer D.I.Y. Filters, because they can be constructed to suit Large Ponds and essentially it can hold more media and is Cheaper than Nexus 320. Take care Sir. 👍🙂❤️

DIY filters can be amazing. A good DIY filter can outperform a shop bought filter. And if you like making stuff why not.

@@leecalladine I agree with you. I really do enjoy making things. I did a Pond restoration for someone and I built a D.I.Y. Filter to suit his financial position and out perform shop bought Filters. 👍🙂❤

@@ultimatefishkeeping I modified a design of a barrel system on a y tubers channel .by adding a vortex before the barrels and a bakki shower with seive tray on the top fed by the outlet of last barrel . Only expense was the media.jump start bacteria and ball valves . The barrels.& Dough trays wer free from workplace . already had the 2 vortex chambers . extremely happy with the results and costs compared to buying nexus and rdm filters

@Micheal Adderley That's awesome, Michael. Well done. 🙂 I am very happy for you. D.I.Y. are more effective than Shop bought Filters especially if they are done right with a lot of thought and planning. Take care, Sir. 👍🙂❤️

For our previous pond which was around 1500 gallons I constructed a pump fed box filter with a large 70 gallon plumbing tank and Japanese Matting and a single 2 inch outlet. Later, to improve performance I linked a second 70 gallon tank and added a second 2 inch outlet, moved the Jap Mat to the second chamber and put 144 12x4 inch brushes in the first. Pumped water would pass through a UV rise through the brushes, overflow the two 2 inch outlets and enter the bottom of the second tank and rise through the cartridge of Jap Matting where it would overflow the 2 outlets and return to the pond! This improved performance massively. When we constructed our current pond of 4000 gallons some 20 years ago, we decided we wanted a gravity fed system but as it was an “in ground” liner pond we decided to go for a mid water fed rather than a bottom drain for ease of installation, something I regret but can live with by using a good pond vac. We installed a 4 bay Cloverleaf system and added a 5th chamber for the pump which also holds media which we then pump up to our previous home made system via 2x55 watt UV’s to which we added 2 additional 70 gallon tanks holding more Jap Matting and other media, and over the years the media has been upgraded in both systems but predominantly uses Japanese Matting which I rate highly! All the chambers/tanks have 1.5 inch drain valves for cleaning. The systems work well, allowing around 700-1000g to be fed a day in the summer but do require weekly cleaning which can take over an hour with a big clean at the beginning and end of each season! If I was building a new pond it would be probably 7-8,000 gallons with 2 bottom drains and 2 Nexus 320 with auto cleaning kits. Although drum systems provide great water quality with little maintenance, they cost as much as a used car and long term are probably likely to breakdown as much and I just don’t have the confidence that all the spares will be available at short notice to get the system up and running again in time to prevent harm to the Koi!

@@leecalladine I have my eazypod air, my 25w uv, my varipump, a 500 gallon fibreglass tank with a viewing widow, and a 4” bottom drain. People say I need to go to 3” as it’s better? I’m in Leicester, so I’m coming to see you as your only up the road, but I know on some of the newbie forums we are clueless on what piping to get and what parts
