How To Clean A Vacuum Cleaner | 5 Simple Steps

This video is all about how to clean and maintain your vacuum cleaner.
My wife and I have owned a cleaning business for over ten years now. Many people have expensive vacuum cleaners sitting in their closets but when you pull them out to vacuum they has little to no suction and they stink to high heaven!!
If your vacuum cleaner is in this kind of condition it is communicating a message to you, and that message is "Clean Me!"
So here it is: How To Clean A Vacuum Cleaner in 5 Simple Steps!
1.) Unplug the vacuum and clean the filters.
Having a clogged filter is one of the main culprits for suction loss. and the bad smells emanating from your vacuum cleaner.
If you don't know where the vacuum filters are at just consult you manual. Most filters are washable. After you wash them lay them aside for 24 hours to dry before reassembling them.
2.) Clean the Canister
The canister can be cleaned in the sink with warm water and dish soap. Lay it aside to dry for 24 hours. If your vacuum cleaner has a bag just replace the bag once it gets half way full.
3.) Clean the Hoses
Stick a broom handle down the hoses to make sure there are no obstructions.
4.) Clean the beater bar and the area around it
Grab a pair of scissors and cut along the plastic cutting away hair and carpet fibers.
5.) Clean your attachments
Just soak you attachments in a sink with warm water and dish soap. They lay aside to dry for 24 hours.
Bonus step number 6:
Make the vacuum cleaner smell good! Apply a couple drops of your favorite fragrance oil to the exhaust filter.

You probably just saved me a couple hundred dollars. My vacuum was so unbelievably dirty. Especially in the hose, it was clogged with all my German shepherds fur and dirt. Even found a second filter that has never been cleaned. It was all brown and matted. Once I cleaned it, I found out it was supposed to be blue lol. Thanks for this very helpful video!

1. Wear rubber gloves. 2. If you have an air compressor, use it. Those tiny holes gather lots of dust on the other side. Canned air can sometimes come out wet if you turn the can. That wetness will make the dust stick. It’s also pretty expensive. 3. I stick a bounce dryer sheet in the canister. It swirls around and releases a pleasant smell. The fiber sheet also tends to wipe the inside down until it starts getting full.

Very helpful video. I'm currently cleaning an old vacuum left behind by my old roommates and it almost likely sit in dust for over a year. I can practically tell why they stopped using it for vacuuming. The clog filled practically every part of it, making it barely functioning the way it is supposed to, and they definitely never thought of cleaning it.

I use my shop vac to clean my vacuum. I use the suction and reverse the hose to use it as a blower after I've used a tooth brush to loosen debris. I do this every couple months.

Any recommendation on how to clean the hose? Is it safe to use baking soda and vinegar? I thought for beating mold and stuff like that

My hose is removable from my vacuum so I can soak it in a large plastic tote container with soapy water. Then I'll run the garden hose through it until the water runs clean and hang it so both sides can drip dry overnight. Hope this helps.

In your opinion what’s the best mop for cleaning a variety of floors such as: tiles, vinyl, wooden, etc? I use a string mop you buy at Wal-Mart. Always use Rayon and not cotton. We charge by the job. How much to charge depends on what part if the country you are living though👍

As long as you can remove the hose from the vacuum and there's no risk of it getting on the motor I don't see why not. As you mentioned just make sure it's completely dry before reattaching it and turning it on.
