I am a psychologist who works with chronic pain patients (and I have a bad back and a bum knee, so I also use these types of tips). Everything Melissa said is very helpful. Here are some other tips: -Walk with your vacuum rather than push it around. Bending often aggravates back pain, so standing tall and walking with your vacuum as much as you can really helps. -Use extension poles on mops (dry and wet). You can get aluminum (lighter weight) ones in the paint department. Extension poles elongage your reach and reduce bending. -Sit in a chair or stool with casters while you work. You can scoot yourself around while you mop, vacuum, or dust. -Get a duster on an extending pole. Swiffer has one wtih a 6 foot reach. -I personally love a spin mop because you can use it so many ways to clean more than the floor. An extension pole helps you get up high to clean cabinets and walls, behind furniture to clean baseboards, even windows. -My favorite thing for cleaning windows and mirrors is a microfiber pad on a long handle. -Declutter. Less inventory means less cleaning. -Put your most used items (especially in the kitchen) between shoulder and hip level. Put pull-out trays in your lower cabinets. If remodeling your kitchen or bathroom, put drawers in the lower cabinets. -Use a reacher stick to get laundry out of the washer and dryer. -If you need a step stool to reach high places, look for one that has stair rails built in for additional security, and get one that reaches higher than you think you will need (ie, 5 steps instead of 3-4) so you have something to grab onto to steady yourself. And check the load rating to make sure it will manage your weight plus whatever the heaviest item you may be putting up. -I use a broom from Dollar Tree along with a long handle to clean the tub and shower. A hand-held shower helps with rinsing. I replaced the original hose that came with my hand-held for one that is long enough that I can reach all corners of my shower. -You can get long-handled toilet brushes from a janitorial supply house, saves you from bending as much. -pace yourself. Work a little, rest a little. If you need to, put ice on your back or knee to knock down some of the inflammation work has triggered. While resting, work on something you can do seated (like, go through mail or other papers, fold laundry, etc). -Institute 5-minute tidies with everyone in the house taking part. This is not cleaning, but tidying up by getting rid of trash, taking dishes to kitchen and putting in a sink of hot soapy water or in the dishwasher, straightening cushions and blankets, taking things to where they belong (ie, shoes, coats, toys, school materials, etc.)

thank you so much for this video, i'm in my mid-20s so accepting that i was disabled was hard for me for a little while, but pushing myself only made it worse. pacing is key, and adaptation has also been super important for me! if you're like me and you have something like POTS and you can't stand up for too long, doing a task that requires a lot of standing in something like an office chair might help, along with pacing yourself like melissa suggested in the video! i often put away laundry or even clean my bathroom while seated, just because you're doing a task differently doesn't mean you're not doing it!

I have Ehlers Danlos Syndrome, Postural orthostatic tachycardia syndrome, depression, anxiety a long with other illness. I suffer from chronic pain, insomnia, dizziness, fainting spells, just to name a few. This video was so validating. I beat myself up a lot that it’s so pathetically hard to “just get it clean and organized already!” Also the “I used to be able to do this with no issues.” This is internalized ableism, which I struggle with a lot due to how frustrating these limitations are. Think of the Spoon theory (which is a thing for chronic pain but can be applied to other diseases), basically you wake up each morning with a certain amount of spoons. The spoons are kinda equivalent to energy currency (ex: it takes 4 spoons to take a shower & 6 spoons to sweep the floor) the number of spoons you wake up with depends highly on your illnesses, (some bad days I’ll wake up with like 5 spoons and on good days I’ll wake up with like 13, though you gotta be mindful not to over exert yourself during good days). Bad days are annoying and stressful cause you now gotta plan your day around not spending all your spoons and having enough for important tasks 😤😖

Melissa, thank you! I suddenly developed chronic migraines (15+per month) almost a year and a half ago. I appreciate this content! On my "better" days, I used to scramble and try to get as much cleaning done as possible, but it came at the expense of sacrificing hobbies and spending time with others. I've now adopted a different perspective, and when I'm feeling a little better, I ask myself...what is something that needs to be done, and what is something I want to do? I make time for both and feel more balanced and happier because of it. I like the 15 minute rule as well, but I also try to take advantage of shorter time periods like when my oven is pre-heating, for example. I try to think of simple tasks I can accomplish during that time. And yes, asking for help isn't always fun, but it's crucial. Looking forward to the next video!

I'm so glad you are addressing this! When I started having chronic pain, I fruitlessly searched high and low for this kind of information. I learned two things that help tremendously. The first is maintenance. The dirtier something is the harder it is to clean. Think about a shower, if you dry it after every use then you rarely have to scrub or spray products. The second thing is routines. I put things off because I knew certain things would cause pain and ruin the day. Now I have routines so I'm not stacking painful chores on top of each other.

I still struggle with being unable to do what I did even 20 years ago, but coming to terms with limitations is the most important thing I can do. My daily task list is a maximum of 3 realistic items. Emphasis on "realistic." For example, I don't plan to do anything else on grocery shopping day, because I know from experience it's not likely to happen. Feeling bad about not doing more is a waste of energy so I don't set myself up for failure. I've been taking one thing per month to try to revise to align to my current ability. Some things are ongoing because it takes several months from me to develop a habit. Currently, I'm trying to make spot cleaning the main bathroom an automatic morning habit. The 2-5 minutes per day has made the weekly cleaning easier and a lot faster.

Speaking as someone who was born with Cerebral Palsy, has been involved in a pedestrian/motorist collision twice (hit by a vehicle crossing the street), torn ligaments and tendons in one knee, suffers sciatica in my lower back, AND recovered from a stroke which weakened my right side three years ago, this is what I do: I choose one room or SECTION of a room to clean at a time, and take rest breaks throughout the day while working to clean that room or section of a room, setting a time frame for the rest break, since I know myself well enough to know that I'll begin looking for excuses to put off finishing the chore given half a chance and then leave it half done. That time frame is usually the length of time it takes me to pour and drink a 12 ounce can of soda at my kitchen table. That also allows me to get a snack or have lunch while cleaning. If I don't have the energy to do everything in a chore, such as laundry, on a certain day, I break the chore down even further, such as, 'okay, I know I need towels washed, but don't have the energy to carry all of the towels and washcloths as well as hand towels, so I'm only going to wash two towels, two wash cloths and two hand towels for right now, because that's what I can do RIGHT NOW'. I break down my chores into sections and 'what am I able to do RIGHT NOW?' when cleaning. My chores may taker me a week or more to complete doing it that way now, when it took maybe a day or two when I was younger, but the chores still get done. It's always okay to say to yourself 'This is what I need the most for today when doing chores' and only concentrate on that, rather than pushing yourself to get everything done all at once.

This is a very needed topic. I used to have a cleaning business and I was good at it! I had some weird health issues since I was young that rapidly deteriorated in recent years. I used to hiking in mountains and now I struggle to walk around the block. I do some of these already for example ask for help ( though this is the hardest task!) getting rid of things, I even moved to a smaller 1st floor apartment ( my R knee would often give way on stairs) and clean in small increments of time. For your tools video I and some of your viewers may have pets, I have an extended kitty litter scoop I got on Amazon and it's a game changer! It was not too expensive and it makes it so I can keep my pet. I also use corn based litter much lighter than clay.

In order to make cleaning easier, we bought a Teneco Mop and a Dyson vacuum, both of which require charging. We really had no place to charge them that wasn't "in your face" for company, so my clever husband installed an outlet in the linen closet, and I downsized the stuff in that closet enough to allow us to take out the lower shelves. Now the machines are easily accessible and out of sight! Also, since we don't have kids at home anymore, we redid a clothes closet into side-to-side shelving. It is amazing how much more efficient shelves are if you don't need to hang clothes. I replaced the doors with neutral curtains to make the books, bedding, games and photo albums stored in there even easier to access.

My best advice is really to embrace short work periods with plenty of actual rest in between. Some days that might be 10 minutes and that’s all. Others maybe you can manage more. Do not let yourself be sucked into the mindset, “oh a little more won’t hurt” and then the next day or two or three might be days where you can’t do anything. I’ve have lived with chronic pain and fatigue for over 25 years. Each day is a challenge but be kind to yourself and let go of the need for everything to be perfect.

The handle is plastic and it is a glass jar…I put the Dawn in that. Washing dishes has been so much easier with this method. All I have to do is pour. The handle is also easier to hold onto. No squeezing or pumping. Best tool in my arsenal of cleaning products.

Melissa, this is brilliant!! Thanks for doing this series. Even if you don't have mobility issues (I do--chronic back pain), none of us are getting any younger! I have a tip and a question. Tip: Get a handheld showerhead that has a pause button and a rechargeable back scrubber with changeable heads. They make your shower so much easier and efficient. Just get in, wet yourself down, pause the water (which also SAVES water!), and get your scrubber! This can be used for your back, your legs, and the ones with a pumice stone feature loosen AND brush away dead skin on your feet! Then when you're ready, just rinse where you need to. So if your hair mask needs more time, you don't have to stand there waiting to rinse off the rest of you. No more dodging the shower spray. Afterward, run the showerhead around the shower to rinse the walls and doors or liner. Finally, take all the brush heads you used and put them in your dishwasher to be cleaned. Question: Can makeup brushes be cleaned in the dishwasher? I read that you can on another site and cleaning these by hand is an issue for me and my bum back. However, I've read on other sites that washing in the dishwasher either destroys the bristles or dissolves the glue around the neck. Mine aren't super expensive, and I've been tempted to try it, but thought I'd ask you first. Thanks again for this great series. I know it will be a huge help to many of us out here!

Thanks for this. I asked for it a while back but took my comment down because I felt awkward. When you have limitations, it can be hard emotionally too. So I'm glad you are doing this. I'm looking forward to part two. I have endurance issues as well as lesser balance and am supposed to avoid hyperextending my neck (looking up). So I am always looking for useful tools. Now there's one thing I have to touch on, the suggestion for home aide is not a bad idea. I used to be an aide as well as a nurse, and I did a lot of time in private homes. I'm mentioning this because it was an issue with many clients I had, regardless of the company, and that is depending on the type of insurance you have, it might be required to also have hands on physical help during the visit. Such as help with bathing and dressing as well as cleaning your home. It wasn't much of an issue with private pay, but just something to be aware of with insurance. This was in Ohio. Such a great video. My biggest challenge...... is asking for help!!! Expectations! I used to think it isn't good enough, if I didn't do it myself, but now with so many limitations, I need to let others help me and realize it is good enough. Thank G'Ness, I am still able to do many things again, but when I can't, ask for help!!!

with sore hands for a while now I have completely changed how I wipe surfaces ...I cannot wring out cloths anymore, so I use a dish wand(the fat hollow handle holds dishwash liquid) - the end is a scrubby sponge, I use it for kitchen benches etc, then either wipe with a paper towel,then bin that, or use a cloth to wipe dry and place straight into the wash afterwards. I glued(PVA) a piece of microfibre cloth onto the end of my bathroom one, to keep it safe for surfaces there.(you can get silicone ones too) For shower I use a chux cloth and hang to dry without wringing. I really hope this helps someone out there. I am also using my food precessor a lot more, it's light enough to bring out in sections and saves me using knives or peelers more than I have to.

I've had to accept the fact that I can't carry heavy loads like I used to, so I buy smaller size containers of things in multiple so that they're easier for me to carry from the car to the house, to load and unload, I have a suitcase dolly and a folding wagon to help with unloading items from my car whether groceries or items I use when traveling or camping. I've had to downsize my ice chests In use for travel and camping. This simple adjustment has saved me a lot of frustration and muscle strain.

I would also add that an alternative to a cleaning caddy on wheels, is to store a small number of cleaning tools in each major area of the house. That way you don’t need to carry stuff around the whole house. Eg: in each of my bathrooms I have a small stash of rags, cleaning spray, and scrub brushes. And another set in my kitchen.

Melissa talked about this before in a previous video, but figure out which locations in your home need to be clean in order for you to feel good in your space and focus on those. Think maybe two or three spaces. For me, it's my kitchen, living room and bathroom (also clean sheets on my bed). Focus on those high impact areas for you. I find, on a day when I am struggling (I have MS and deal with a lot of fatigue and visual issues), I can check in on those areas and clean one of them and it makes the house feel much better.

Thank you! I’ve been waiting for you to make these videos. I really hope you continue to make more from time to time. Having arthritis and fatigue has definitely slowed me down. I have the cart on wheels and that was a game changer. I also use a shower chair to sit on when cleaning things like the outside of the toilet or wiping down lower cabinets. I’ve also given the task of cleaning showers and tubs to my husband. Doing that task can literally put me down for the count for a day or two. We also got a robot vacuum for daily maintenance and my hubs used the regular vacuum for a deeper clean every so often. And I basically do what I can, when I can and that’s that. It really helps having a supportive spouse. I’m looking forward to the next video!

However, I break up my cleaning jobs & don't try to do too much in one day. I make a list, for each day of the week & that helps me to not overdo. Regarding the difficulty of asking for help, I have a story. A friend of mine was looking for a new job and she had an interview for her dream job in 2 days. She had dyed her hair purple for fun a few weeks prior and she was confident that that would not go well during the interview. She told me she felt bad about calling her long-time hairdresser to ask for the favor of an appointment that day or the next to cover the purple. She wasn't sure that it was nice or fair of her to do so. I pointed out that if she asked her hairdresser anyway she would be giving the hairdresser the opportunity of being a hero for her. My friend called (I think she even used the word "hero" when she asked) and her hairdresser came to the rescue! She got the job.

Love the cart suggestion. I keep cleaning supplies in the kitchen and bathrooms. Yes, duplicates, but less need to carry things around the house because I have basically 3 zones (2 bed/bath rooms, plus laundry/kitchen/dining/living).The vacuum cleaner is centrally located in a coat closet. As my strength and energy returns, I try to do a little more each day. Thank you for the good ideas.

I use a Swiffer with reusable covers for almost everything. You can remove a section of the pole or add another if you have 2 Swiffers. I use one regular length to mop, and one shortened one to clean and dust walls, cabinets, shelves, drawers, ceiling, etc. It's a game changer. It seems like making the handle shorter would make it harder to reach but it's not, it's way easier to use. I bought frilly chenille covers and they work so well, especially on textured surfaces that Swiffer mops usually struggle with I have hEDS and other health issues, bending over and reaching are difficult/painful/distressing I also use Wet and Forget weekly shower cleaner. I can't realistically scrub my bathtub but I don't need to anymore
@no_peace
@no_peace 15 күн бұрын
Using the Swiffer helps you not have to reach or move your arm so much but it also makes it so you don't have to grasp a wet cloth. My fingers would cramp up and my skin got all dried out. So every part of my hands would hurt
