How to combat loneliness, and how it differs from depression

Two new studies suggest older adults are more lonely than they used to be. The American Psychological Association found on average that reported loneliness began to increase after age 75. But loneliness is an issue for all generations. Psychiatrist Dr. Sue Varma, who consults on depression, anxiety disorders, and work-life balance issues, joins "CBS This Morning" to discuss the findings.

My mother who I was very emotionally dependent on died this autumn and I never felt so alone. Have you ever called helplines just to talk to someone you thought would understand but found them quite the opposite of understanding or helpful? That is my my experience with them for the most part and it only leaves me feeling worse. How do you manage to distract yourself when you are isolated?

3:05 I disagree with what he says here. I felt more lonely when I was going to school every day than when I’ve been at home for months at a time during quarantine. If I had to guess, I’d say the reason might be because I see everyone else around me talking to their friends and forming bonds or whatever but I just can’t no matter how hard I try. In this segment it seems like the news people (other than the psychiatrist, who actually knew what she was talking about) were trying to frame it as “you’re lonely because you’re online all the time instead of interacting face-to-face,” but saying “it’s easy not to be lonely, just interact face to face” is almost like saying “it’s easy not to be homeless, just get a house.”

I feel like I choose to live alone because I've been hurt so many times. The best buddies I've ever had are my two cats. Going to the doctor's is my social life. I have had that experience very recently with my ex who was my close and only real friend ( or so I thought) I am utterly devastated to realise that he has been stringing me along ad pretending to be be there for me while he was infact just planning revenge by hurting me when I'm at my lowest. He was harbouring huge bitterness about stuff from the past that I thought he/ we had dealt with.. I'm in shock at this revelation and loss. I have nobody else in the world. How do you cope with loneliness and isolation?

@@MrMartellSincere I do not want to over step my boundaries or offend you, know that what im about to say is coming from a place of care.....I know that we live in a world where God is despised. But take it from me. I've been at some real difficult places in my life and I promise you.... after I started reading my bible and APPLYING the things I learnt my life started improving and I started to find peace. Example 1) reading that it was my responsibility as a christian to give to the poor , Widows, and orphans. I found it dificult to give because I always felt like I didn't have enough. And commited to giving once a month and after a few months I noticed that I started getting excited on chooosing who I will help this month. It also broke me out of the stingy mindset.and I started feeling Joy. Example 2.. I always wondered.... God where are you? And then I read in the bible that every good thing comes from god. That includes that nice cup of coffee, the cool breeze on your skin, the ability to hope, being in your right mind, your working eyes Hands and feet and an encouraging word from a stranger. That's when I noticed that he is ALWAYS there. Giving me gifts throughout my entire day and he has never forgotton to wake me up. Looking at his fi ger print I. My life bring me peace. Makes me feel seen. I can go on and on. But give Jesús a try. Even if it's a six months exercise. What do you have to loose?

Im 40. Been alone since i was 26, ghosted from society and social media. Nobody will talk to me, childhood abuse has changed how i behave and treat others. Social Media sucks. I got a msg from my sister last night first time in 10yrs to "sign up on yada yada so i can make $50" and i told her to never contact me again and blocked her. This is the same sister who helped my family move to Florida behind my back while we were homeless. Im 20 and been struggling with this since a teenager loneliness can be very toxic to the mind but I've learned that the only way we can truly overcome this it's the start bettering yourself everyday and loving yourself, compliment yourself in the mirror, find several workouts you love and allow your body to build off of them. Be yourself most of all we are all unique beings and God will never leave us sometimes we suffer in this life because we tell ourselves were not good enough but deep inside we are more than good enough there is nothing that we can't do if we set our minds to it i know you probably don't believe in God but this life is only temporary I truly do believe that God put us here to see things from his point of view but i promise you if u focus on the positive only your mind will start to change

I understand the need to speed talk on TV especially CBS morning programs. But I just slowed down this video in order to not be irritated by used car salesman rapid fire speech. Oh by the way I get lonely depressed and anxious but I deal with it by withdrawing from the situation and talking out loud or thinking out loud for the audience sake, like the character Tom Seleck played on Magnum P. I he was always talking to his self or thinking out loud (for the audience) as a way of dealing with everything. Works well try it become an honest person and deal with yourself, I think Journaling is a different form of talking to yourself with honesty

Folding the church bulletins, cl eaning the nurseries and doing the laundry for the babies. I've been very sick for a long time. I'm currently at the Mayo Clinic. I look back on the days I was able to serve as the best days of my life.

Other then random people trying to have small talk whenever I am out. People don't do small talk in other countries only in the U.S. if they are lonely these buy a flashy car so people talk to you at the gas station. They lived out ALL there life they were around people now in there final days because everyone is very much busy living out there life MAYBE that means they should live out there's still.
