In my Channel, I show step by step of alternative but authentic Japanese home cooking, which can be made with the ingredients that are easily available outside of Japan.
In this video, I am making Sukiyaki, Japanese style hotpot (Fondu) with thinly sliced beef (or chicken). This is a very savory and yet easy dish, which we often make in the winter, because it warms up from inside.
Ingredients for Sukiyaki (1 Serving)
Sliced Beef (or chicken) 200g
Nappa cabbage 3-5 leaves
Shitake/King trumpet mushrooms 3-5 pcs
Carrots 1/2
Onions 1/2
Scallions 2-4
Tofu 1/2
Warishita sauce
Water 1/2 cup
Soy sauce 3 Tbsp
Sake 3 Tbsp
Mirin 1 1/2 Tbsp
Sugar 1 1/2 Tbsp
Dashi powder 1/2 Tsp

I was raised in Tokyo from 1954 to 1956. Sukiyaki was one of my favorite dishes (just behind sushi). Thank you for sharing this recipe. As for the egg, I simply use my boiled egg slicer and have the slices. Not quite the same, but still, what a meal! Tomorrow night I dine!

I wish I would have watched this video earlier. I just spent two weeks vacation in Japan. It was fantastic experience. However I poured the raw egg into my rice while eating Sukiyaki instead of dipping the meat and vegetables into it. Hope the chef behind the counter didn’t laugh at me🤭🤭 thank you so much for all videos. I think I will go back to Japan sometime in the future. Two weeks was not enough to explore the culture, history , landscape and food in Japan. Again , thank you.

I'm surprised there is no sesame oil? I need to get mirin and dashi to add to my Asian cuisine spices collection which is fabulous. I love cooking foods from around the 🌎. It's alot of work but if you make it a night with your tribe it's a great tradition. It's so much fun with music and drinks. Thank you for sharing. ❤😊

I love your "slurp alert"! I had a giggle! This recipe is similar to Chinese hot pot. The difference is that you cook everything in the sauce so no need to make dipping sauce. I am new to your channel and I'm glad to learn how to cook easy Japanese home cook food.

For everyone doing this with a non stick frying pan: be extra careful and pay attention to the surface of your pan after the cooking. Ours' corroded on the surface apparently because of the acidity of the broth combined with the long cooking time and water. The pan's coating had some copper in it, could be the reason it reacted to the broth this way. Will be buying stainless steel for this type of use in the future.

I’ve heard of the song “Sukiyaki” my mom lived in Japan as an elementary school girl. When I started learning Japanese she told me about it so that I could add it to my Japanese music playlist. It’s a really sad song, by kinda romantic as well.

its not really a sad song. its original name is "Ue wo muite aruko" meaning walking with my chin up. it is a situation that is rather sad, but it tells us to keep walking with chin up.

Please try and use only highly marbled beef. (He used very lean beef and it looked very tough after cooking it - the way it curled, etc. When I make it, I use a nice, marbled boneless rib eye roast and, if possible, have butcher slice paper-thin. If not, I semi-freeze and use electric slicer rotating blade to do the same, just more work for me. This dinner is sooooo worth all the efforts and cost. It's simply wonderful.

I watched this again as I have it saved. Oh my goodness is it just me or is that a lot of food. The food you have to prepare there is as much as I would eat in a whole day spread out over three meals. Also for me personally I could not do the raw egg because I cannot do anything with a slimy consistency. Slimy and I do not get along very well at all. But other than that it looks absolutely delicious. When I tried it it came out very well. Thank you

My friends from and I from Japan studied abroad in Germany. One day we missed sukiyaki so much, we ate raw eggs from a German supermarket and prayed hard that we don't get sick. Two years down the line, I can confirm that we are all (5) doing well. Needless to say, I wouldn't advise anyone to do that.
