When I was applying for disability I lived on $405/month for 2 years. By the time I was awarded disability payments those payments felt like I won the lottery.

I had to live bare-bones after I divorced my first husband. He played merry hell with our children's maintenance money. My salary barely covered the absolute essentials. I was forced to ration food: so many slices of bread, one vienna sausage, one orange, one apple, per day. One glass of milk for each child. We ate a lot of corn meal - it was cheaper than oatmeal. We ate whatever vegetables I could get at bargain prices. We had to ration bathing. I walked to work to save bus fare; school was too far for my kids to walk. Every day was a grinding struggle. This went on for three months before my employer's HR helped me: their lawyer wrote my ex a very stiff letter. It's a long story as to why I had no emergency fund.

Regarding pets, I see quite a few 'Vaccination' Saturdays at the local pet store or the humane society comes to our local in town hardware store (maybe because it's in the center of town) to do vaccines free once a month.

My utility co doesn't do the budget pay. I decided to make my own budget plan. For me that is $150 a month I have a $269 credit right now on my bill after paying $150 this month. I did discover that I could look up my bills for the year on my Utility account. I added up all the bills and divided them by 12. My average for the year per month is $136 or so a month. So by putting in the $150 a month it is giving me a credit on my account. Also, every so often I get a $2 interest credit on my bill. This is electric only. Water is on another bill from another utility co. Trash we have to take to dump ourselves.

I’ve heard this tip of overpaying/rounding up can be helpful for paying down mortgages quicker as well. I don’t have a mortgage, but I’ve started to do it with my credit card monthly payment too!
