How can someone create a portfolio without clients or experience?

Hey, I've a question. I don't have a good project before but got some testimonials. I'm new into copywriting and skeptical if I can still make a portfolio like a website. I want to build one but when I ask others they say just attach your copy in doc and send it. Can a new copywriter make a portfolio like this.

Hi there, of course! The testimonials are a great first step. You can feature that and your services first (if you want to freelance). In the meantime, you can create a few samples to add to your portfolio later. Write yourself a brief (give yourself a copywriting project you make up), and write the copy as if it was a real job. You can then add it to your portfolio. Even if it wasn't a paid gig, it'll show people your writing skills. Create 3-4 of these and you'll be good to go!

Hi! I was wondering, do you recommend adding a picture? I know you mentioned using a picture but I've read that in 2024 recruiters find it better when candidates don't add a picture. @copyfolio

Hi Jean! We generally recommend adding a photo as people don't just hire a copywriter, but a person to work with, and a picture helps create rapport from the get go. With that said, you could definitely choose a portfolio template with no picture on the homepage, and just add one to a dedicated about page instead. If recruiters don't care about the more personal side, they will skip that page -but whoever does care will surely check it out. 🙌
