I don’t know which specific muscle groups it was, but I personally found that it was my upper/mid back that was causing poor posture, and I really realized this when I started doing squats with my arms raised, first with air squats not to mention with a bar which was basically impossible for me. Since I started working on those exercises my posture has improved a ton.

Thanks for sharing! I'm also a big fan of resistance training. Questions: 1. How does your recommendation jive with the S.A.I.D. principle? 2. What changes do you make to your training when targeting postural versus phasic muscles? 3. Have you found vertical pulling movements to be the most effective way to target the muscles of the postural uprighting system?

This absolutely does not work for people with poor posture caused by weak or tight muscles. I physically could not stand up perfectly straight a year ago not matter how hard I tried. The reason being was because some of my muscles were severely shortened and tight. Basically gluing my bones in place. The only way to fix it is to stretch and strengthen every short and tight muscle. I did this and now my body looks and feels better, and I can stand up straight no problem.

@painfixprotocol Жыл бұрын
That's awesome, Jim! I love hearing victory stories - The first progression that I usually recommend for people are to try walking and standing breifly on 1 foot while performing Active Traction. From there we can move to an Airex Pad: amzn.to/3JhYuGN or a Wobble Board w/ and adjustable height: amzn.to/3XDSHQ5 and possible even combined with whole body vibration to really amplify neuro-feedback.

Would a person ever use the Active Traction Unit if you were doing the band exercise behind your neck and pulling your arms forward as shown in another video of yours? I don't mean at the same time as each but do their effects compete in a person's neck? In other words, do the two exercises erase the effect of the other? Should you only pick either the Active Traction Unit or doing the band behind your neck exercise?
@painfixprotocol10 ай бұрын
Good question. Those two exercises provide very different stimulus and accomplish different things. Active Traction builds strength and stamina in the responsible for holding the body up against gravity. Whereas the goal of the band exercise is to restore mobility usually to the middle-lower portion of the neck.

I am a 70 yr old small boned woman with forward head posture and severe hyper kyphosis of the thoracic spine and mild scoliosis. So if I understand you correctly both the Active Traction Unit and the band exercise would be appropriate options for my issues? And could I also benefit from the chin tuck exercise? Thank you for all your help -- so appreciated!
@painfixprotocol10 ай бұрын
@@SharonGiudice Without an examination, I cannot say for certain what would be appropriate in your specific situation. However, in general, Active Traction, band-assisted extension (of the lower cervical spine) and chin tucks are good options for people with FHP & hyperkyphosis.

Good question, Sylvia! I have used the Active Traction Unit (ATU) many times in patients with the conditions you describe. However, all of those people had the advantage of being examined prior to treatment and because no two cases are exactly alike, I would recommend seeing a qualified rehabilitation practitioner in your area for a thorough assessment and to determine whether or not this type of therapy is appropriate for you.

Dr Whitman How does this work with people in wheelchairs Paraplegia or scoliosis!

That's great, and I do keep working with my neck. However, it seems, even if I am holding my neck correctly, that after a few minutes, my back starts to bend at the spot where the spine joins the hip. The more tired I get, the lower it wants to go. That spot would love it if I were to go on all fours. Sometimes the middle part of my back aches, too, but the downward pull is in the lower back. I also seem to have a tendency to lean towards the right. It doesn't usually bother me, but is noticed when I do Tai Chi or Qigong. Elizabeth
@painfixprotocol Жыл бұрын
I understand, Elizabeth. Consistency is the key. Over time this training will help optimize the position of your head so it requires less effort to hold your neck correctly and the really great thing is that you'll be increasing your strength and stamina while this is happening.
