Funny coincidence to stumble over this concept today. Just yesterday, I read in the newspaper that a woman has been knitting a scarf over the last year, two rows everyday, with the colours based on how many minutes delayed her commuters train was that day. (Spoiler alert, the result is not flattering for the railway company.) Same idea but with a vindictive streak if that’s something you find motivating.

I'm a knitter from the pacific northwest, and I've seen similar projects of scarves or blankets where you do a row or a few rows in yarn matched to the color of the sky (taking a picture at around the same time each day, etc) and they turn out really nice with all the whites, blues, and greys!
@elfrog984 жыл бұрын
I know this is old, but it reminded me of something I saw a few years ago - instead of temperature, they did the sky color that day, so there were like 3 or 4 shades of blue, plus a couple of grays and a white. I think partly cloudy days were averaged out to a lighter blue depending how many clouds there were.

Weather Underground gives temperature history for every location. I actually found temperatures for my oldest granddaughter from twenty years ago. I’ve made one of these for each of my five grandchildren, a grandniece and grandnephew, in many different color spectrums. The time frame commemorated their first year of life. Every one turned out beautiful. I love the idea of twelve blocks. I might try that if I ever make another one. The way I managed yarn quantity was to do a test row, pull it out and measure it so I knew how much yarn I needed for one row. I created a spreadsheet chart with each day and the temp and color, counted the number of rows for each color to see how much yarn I would need. Then I “did the math” based on the yardage in each ball. The prep time took an hour or two, but was worth it. If you’re doing one for a coming year, you can estimate by creating an initial chart based on average temps and then correct it with real temps as you know them (that’s how I di the one for my newest grandson). Also, I put a pretty border on when I was done, which makes a big difference in the finished product.

Why not do a temperature blanket that reflects your mood from day-to-day throughout the year? I think that would be more interesting than reflecting the temperature outside. I guess I could see how it could be discouraging and depressing but I would rather see my true nature throughout the year rather than actual temperatures reflected. That would be something that you would keep and remember, a much better keep sake because it reflects the creator. That way, I'd get to choose two or several favorite colors. Or you could choose a theme of precipitation, with white for snow days and blue for rain days.
@meanqkie2240 Жыл бұрын
Different stitch represents precip type and possibly how much indicated by stitches in a row with a single crochet stitch between? Half inch = one special stitch separated by two plain stitches, one inch = 1special, 1plain. 3 inches =3 specials, 1 plain. I guess you could modify that to suit indefinitely!

I recently saw someone make a temperature blanket where, instead of varying color to indicate temperature, they varied the stitch. We rained almost every day, so everything was a rich green. Temperatures were an average of 40-50F. My summer days were spent playing in puddles and mud or watching the rain drops race down the window- betting silently to myself which would win. And the thunderstorms- they were like fireworks! They were so beautiful. I never minded when the power went out. (Our county is pretty poor money-wise, but rich in other things) We would just set up the candles and get out the flashlights and board games. It’s completely different now. We had a major drought along with the rest of California for the first time in as far back as I can remember. Everything turned this ugly yellowish tinge after a while. We used to flood annually, and now we’ll be lucky if we get a 20 rains a year. If I do one of my hometown in a time passed- it’ll be a reminder. If I do it from this year- It’ll be a reminder.

I chose to go to Humboldt state for the weather, I loved the idea of it being rainy all the time but to my surprise, I haven't even gotten to use any of the many raincoats I bought. It truly makes me sad to hear how different it used to be.

They look like fun and I plan to make one for each of my adult sons based on their first year of life. Since it is hard to know what to crochet for them, this project is personal and interesting so I think that they will like it. I plan to do a simple blanket that will be fast and easy so it won't interfere with my more complex projects. If I fall behind, no big deal. I might even use a different stitch for wind speed.

I just recently started a temperature blanket. It definitely took some planning to do. I didn’t want to just do rainbow colors. Instead I went with a desert color palette since I live in Phoenix, AZ. But I still had to pick the right palette and then I also had to make swatches to estimate how big my blanket was going to be based off my pattern and hook. In the end I chose to do just a simple single crochet pattern with a 5.5 mm hook and my palette consists of muted colors from a dark green for my cold temps to a burgundy for my hottest temps. And my temps are in brackets of 10 starting at 59 and ending at 120.

I started after the start date and it's now even further behind the start date. I do two rows some days and none others and I am happy as it is a record of a very special year to me and looking at it will always bring a smile to my face. If you like the idea there is no need to crochet every day. You can go as many years back in time as you like to mark a special year for you or the recipient. Some people do them as wedding presents, doing that first year of married life and gifting it a year later ... now that would stress me for sure.

I'm thinking of doing one, but in knit instead of crochet, using a different stitch pattern for each season. Since I hate weaving in the ends, I think I'll leave them as fringe. I knit & crochet, but knitting is my first love, and this will be my first temperature blanket. If this one works out, I might make one for my great grandson who is currently 5 months old.

I stopped mid-way on both my 2017 and 2018 blankets. So this week I am finally finishing them. Not by crocheting the rest of the days, but by taking what I did do and turning them into wall art, 2 pillows, 2 sachets, and a baby blanket. I'm pretty happy with this result, that those months of work aren't being wasted! I'm also 9 days in to my 2019 blanket. I am obsessed with temp blankets! I actually learned to crochet in 2016 so I could make one, but I never got further than a month or two in that year. I am determined this will be the year I finish one completely. Just found your channel and subbed. Can't wait to see your temp project progress.

Thank you for your comments and suggestions. I know I’m late to the party - it’s now 2023 - but I had never heard of temperature blankets until a few days ago, and now I’m planning to make one. Another KZbinr is going to teach a different stitch every month to make it a sampler. I’m going to be living in / visiting at least three different countries this year, and I’m going to section off the countries, I’ve got my palate (I have a huge stash of yarn, so no problem with coming up with enough of each color), and I’m fiddling with the temperature ranges, and I think I’ll end up with something I really like.

Naomi Hutchin ditto! I don’t want a big blanket but I thought 2 rows of each colour over the year would make a nice sized scarf. But then watching this video, I like the idea of 12 squares, you can see what each month looked like and get to do 12 different stitches! Moss stitch, back stitch, sc, hdc, etc. Now I’m conflicted! I started one last year and I don’t think I did two weeks worth of the scarf! Ha! Maybe charting the temperatures and doing a month at a time is more manageable?!

Our youngest son is still currently living at home but plans on following in his brothers footsteps and our family tradition by joining the Air Force after his 21st birthday (Nov 2022). I thought wouldn't if be cool to give him a temperature blanket beginning with the day he was born through the first year of his life. Presenting it to him on his 21st birthday. Now the research begins as we've lived in 2 states during his first 21 years.

I made a crochet temperature blanket for my mom, representing the first year (1960-1961) of her marriage to my dad (13 months). She had tears in her eyes when I told her, since my dad passed away in 2011. I also made it a family blanket with the high for the day each of us three children. I could not find the highs for the days my mom and dad were born, so I used their favorite colors. I found a neutral color to separate each month with 1 row. Plus the first year was spent in three different places (my dad was in the Navy), so I used two rows of same neutral color to separate each location. I used three rows to separate temperature from the family section. Also using the neutral color I made a border using a fan type stitch, it turned out huge, and beautiful. I am excited to give it to her. I used sc crochet stitches and it is big enough to go on her bed if she wants to use it there. It was a HUGE, long term project I loved doing. It was what it represented and who I was making it for. Would I do the same project again? Absolutely. Why? Because it was for my mom and I know she will treasure it.

Weather Underground is great for charting your yearly temperatures and researching temperatures for a specific year! I made a tally mark for the temperature (high and/or low) and that helped me figure a basic year range to plan colors. I ended up using a 10 degree range per color. I had 12 colors. I did a typical granny square with the daily low as the center and the high in the middle row and typical black as a border to tie it all together. It fits my queen-sized bed.

I did a temperature blanket for my Grandson from June 13, 2017 to June 12, 2018 (his first year). I used rainbow palette and I loved it. I will be doing one for his baby brother (July 12, 2018 to July 11, 2019) using the same palette. I record the max temp for each day and then divide it by 7 to get the avg for the week. I look up the info on a monthly basis. Last year I started a temperature shawl. The mistake, I feel, I made was taking the average temperature for the week. I didn't get to use all the colors I wanted. I did not like the way it turned out, but I will use it as a doll blanket for my neighbor's granddaughter (she doesn't know it yet). I will redo it using the same color palette i used for my shawl, but use the daily high. I will crochet a row for each day (365 vs 52) so I can have more variety. Also, I found the wunderground's numbers changed when I would go back and double check. So, I found it better to wait for the month to pass and then get the information.

It is February 2022, I'm thankful this video is still here because I had never heard of it & I'm really fascinated by this idea & the variations I've read in the comments. I have a lot of depression & anxiety & I think this could be really good for me & a good distraction. It would be amazing to see it completed & be like, "Wow I did it! I stuck with even when I didn't feel like it & this is a huge step for me in learning how to stick with a project til the very end." I'm pretty ADD so sticking to a project & actually finishing it is a big struggle for me lol I really want to do this & I have a lot of yarn so yeah, let's go! Now to decide if I'm going to do 40 something rows to catch up from January 1st or catch up from my birthday which is this month & it will be closer to a year. Or go from start date to start date. Nothing wrong with that! Now for some research, some digging through the garage & some planning to get started. Just has an idea, what if you did different hues of one color (probably with some white to balance it out?) that represents that month for you. For example, reds & pinks & white for February, greens for March, ect. I feel like that could be neat as well. But it could be hideous too. That's why you gotta try & see. Don't be afraid of a project not turning out how you wanted & it's not worth fixing so it's better to start over. Don't let all that yarn, all that fabric, all that paper, all that paint, all those pens, all that vinyl, all your ink pads, whatever your medium is, don't let it just sit in storage never to be used because you're afraid of messing up (whether it comes from perfectionism or guilt for wasting money, etc.) & holding back from the act of simply creating, or keeping yourself from having a really good outlet to process emotions ,or even not pursuing your passion & sharing it with others via charity or income, because you are afraid no will like your creativity, your designs & ideas. All of this is stuff I'm struggling with myself, I'm not perfect over here. Just sharing encouragement while trying to encourage & believe in myself too. I have quote from Indiana Jones & the Crystal Skull, that resonated in my core when I heard it & it has stuck with me ever since. It may even be the last line of the movie. But the quote is, "How much of life is lost in waiting." Like wow right?! I don't know about everyone else bit I wait a lot. I have a hard time doing because I'm afraid & insecure. But I'm denying myself so much joy because I'm waiting for the day I'll feel like starting. Or the day I have no fear & I'm rearing and ready to go. But if I wait, I'll never start! Usually we have to act into feeling & take that leap of faith. So here we go. Taking a leap of faith even though I feel a lot of fear & overwhelmed. I'm also realizing how much this applies to life in general. We are one choice away from living the life we dream/the first steps to get there. I believe in all of you! Don't wait, do.

NOT I quickly got bored and the more i thought about it the idea was a bust ... 365 rows or 365 granny squares no matter what size was going to turn out a HUGE blanket, hard to handle and too big to use . I just saw this video and wanted to add my insight for anyone who might be doing this. I did a temperature scarf a few years ago and even though it was knit, not crochet, I have some tips that might help you, and a design idea. For the record, i do crochet as well. For those getting lost on their weeks. I used the national weather service station closest to me when I missed the news report for the day. (Also you might be able to get past data if you wanted to do a temperature item for a different year.). Similiar to the poster below me, except I used a different stitch to also represent how much precipitation we got that day. Since I had to accomodate for snow and rain within a year, each stitch represented 1/2 inch of precipitation. I also choose a side of the scarf to present morning and evening. So if it snowed an inch from noon-1pm, those special stitches went in the middle of the row. There were sometimes the whole row was the other stitch (purls for those familiar with knitting) I'm not certain how this would work with crochet since it seems crochet stitches change in height and width. But it is food for though.

I'm doing one based on drawing daily tarot cards for 2024!!! It's gonna be a lot more random than temperature and I have 10 colors from browns, purples and greens in muted shades. I have 5 different categories for the cards: Major Arcana, Suit of Swords, Wands, Pentacles and Cups, and since you can read Tarot cards upright and reversed that gives me 10 colors in total. It's gonna be gorgeous!! I also decided to do different stitches for different card groups: 0-10 Major Arcana, 11-22 Major Arcana, Ace-5, 6-10 and Page-King. This way I have 5 different stitches to add a bit interest into the project and also have a more accurate documentation of the cards I drew over the year!!

What you were saying about using a pattern you love I can definitely relate to-I have been working on a mermaid tail blanket for the last... two years, I think it is, now? And I love the pattern I chose for that, which is individual shells, essentially, with the stitches picked up from the two below. A lot of weaving in, but oh so worth it, it already looks stunning and I can see that same method working for this idea, too! Especially as I can easily complete a section each day, lol. So, now I’m tempted to do that. Thanks, TL Yarns!

What area are you living? I'm in southern California. I started a temperature blanket in 2017. I used a double crochet stitch. I still have not finished but what I did was keep a log of the temperature on my Color Note app and for the days I did not record the temperature I went to the Weather Underground app. I entered my area it had the actual high & low temperature for that day. I haven't totally given up on this one. I'll finish it some time this year. I think I will also start a new one this year using the suggestion of color palette of gradual hues of one color. Different hues of my favorite color, lavender. I'll use various hues from lavender through dark purple or maybe blues, Then I'll figure out the stitch I want o use. Not sure yet.
