I just cut the bottom off each stalk, put my whole bag of romaine lettuce from Costco the sink with cold water and rinse the full leaves off and let them drain a little on the towel, then start putting a bunch in the colander ( I have the exact same one as yours!) until they’re all dried off! Then I store them in gallon storage bags, I make sure there is no air in the bags as I’m zipping it closed and I end up with two bags of fresh clean leaves ready to go for whatever occasion is needed, tacos, salad or sandwiches and it keeps for nearly 2 weeks!! I love Romaine!!💕

I worked in produce for 6 years at a major grocery store chain. I've seen dirt, spiders, bees, flys, and more in Romain. If you aren't pealing your leaves off before cutting, you never know what you're eating.

If you're using a large salad spinner like in her video, you can fill it half way with water and put small batches at a time in the spinner, then ruffle through the pieces and thoroughly rinse off all the dirt and junk. Then pour off the water and spin it dry. It works very well.
@Hummingbirds20233 ай бұрын
LExactly my point, rinse before you use it! I cut the end however much I want. Then separate the leaves but the leaves into a colander rinse each leaf, then shake the colander let the water drain out, put the bunch together and chop small slices, I use romaine all the time for my salads. My mom would fill her sink half way and separate her leaves in the sink and soak them, she made the best prettiest salads. Miss you Mom! ❣️

Thanks Rachel for this easy and convenient way to cut the nuttritious romaine lettuce. With all due respect, I find quite often there are discolored overripe wilted leaves and I have to check each one before cutting them in 1/2 inch pieces with my hand . I then put them all in a bowl of cold water for 5-7 minutes and squish them to clean them . Then I drain them. Sometimes I go through 3 rinsings of the cut up romaine. Your way though is excellent if you know the romaine lettuce is clean. Thanks again for this excellent tip on cutting romaine. Every supper meal should have salad and you make it easy to prepare it. I have followed the tear/don’t cut rule for over 40 years. I think metal was the reason the brown occurred where it was sliced. High quality knives won’t do that. Now I remember the plastic knife marketing of the 90s LOL Looking forward to showing my kids your 1/2 slice then thirds. Needed this lesson TY

How PERFECT!! I wish I could give you 10 thumbs up for this one! I never thought about cutting Romaine lengthwise like that. Thank you…I’ll never cut it “the old way” again! One thing you may try that I learned from my mother (who was a University of Texas home economics major in 1942) was never to cut lettuce with a metal knife; THAT’S why it turns brown. I use a plastic lettuce knife AND also have started using it to cut avocados. You still have to take normal precautions with avocado, but it does help. 😊

I love how you cut the lettuce, Rachel, and I'm going to do that. Something I learned is that if your lettuce is a bit on the wilty side (or even if it isn't), after you rinse it, put ice and water into the bottom of the salad spinner. Place the basket with the lettuce in there for 15 minutes or so. Dump the ice and water, and then spin for cold, crispier greens!
