And the funny thing is that even then they didn't play the Grizzly song when Daisy & Barrow did the dance. They played "Everybody's Doin' It" instead.

There were a plethora of “animal dances” that came out at that time to match up with that crazy new music, Jazz. There was The Turkey Trot, the Camel Walk ( kind of like Michael Jackson’s moonwalk) and The Bunny Hop to name just a few.

Love how there's a picture of Irene and Vernon Castle. Also enjoyed the demonstration on how to do "the Grizzly Bear" dance. Now I can put a dance with the Edison cylinder recording I have on my MP3 player. I believe the song The Grizzly Bear was recorded once by Stella Mayhew and another version sung by Arthur Collins for the Edison 2 minute black wax cylinder records.

There were a whole repertoire of what were called "Animal Dances" in the Ragtime Era (early 20th century) popularized by Vernon and Irene Castle. The dancer in one of the segments in the Dutch cap, with black and white panels in her dress is based on photographs of Irene Castle.

But ragtime music seems to have started before 1840s. as US superstar. pianist composer Louis Moreau Gottschalk published Danses Cubaines (Danzas Cubanas)- pure but not known ragtime!!

Well, on Spotify there is a recording of Grizzly Bear Stomp by Larry Goldings. Could easily have been what Daisey and Thomas should have danced to....now, hearing this at 8:28a.m. I want to head downstairs and either dance or pop in my dvd with a cup of tea. Call Mrs. Patmore!!!

THIS IS ALMOST FUNNY IT IS SO AWFUL. African American created these danes not Irene and Vernon Castle. They stole as many black dances as they could and gave no credit to the originators, though they used a black musical director, James Reese Europe. Tango is also a dance of black origin from the black ghettoes of Argentina.
