4 oz. tennis ball in the shape of a 5 oz. fishing sinkweight on a pocket full of twine, or high test wire with a rough edge. Last time I practiced with chain, I lost grip of the whole thing and I'm very lucky the whole thing didn't fly off and smash through a windshield.

Short sticks are great. Great for catching or blocking punches and kicks. Easy to break a wrist or elbow or disable the arm at the shoulder joint. I find it helpful to have a loop to put your hand or wrist threw to make a snap strick.

Matt, i just got done watching the videos. Really good for sure. I especially like the 12 inch stick (Dan Bong) video, because i believe it is the ultimate stick, for when things get "up close and personal". It addresses the issue of one on one self defense, where other longer sticks perhaps aren't the best choice, especially where the attacker tries to take the defender to the ground. The speed and precision of the thrusts and strikes, even as basic as they are, really makes it a force multiplier. I look forward to your next class with this little "equalizer". God Bless. Doug.

Thanks for the video. If I most wanted to simulate a magazine, I'd probably make my stick eleven inches. That would be the same as most 8-1/2 by 11 magazines. In Florida, you wouldn't see this, but in Wyoming, ice scrapers are on sale in convenience stores for a good part of the year. They aren't the right shape exactly, but if one turns one corner slightly forward, they are going to hurt if driven into someone's gut. If driven into the face, the corner might open a cut. Driven into the nose, they are going to hurt. With a hammer fist strike, they will work as well as a magazine or dowel. In a grocery store, a meat fork will of course be useful. If the place doesn't sell meat forks, even a really solid ladle spoon might work for those techniques. A rolling pin wouldn't be ideal but might work. In the cleaning aisle, a toilet brush might work, but if I reach that aisle, I'm going for a broom to get reach. Tearing the cup off a toilet plunger turns it into a kali stick. A good-sized wrench could do the job if one has an excuse to have a wrench nearby. Many companies are making aluminum flashlights that are about this size. I think Maglite still makes one around that size.

A soup can is short, but solid. Many have a decent edge on them, too. Does hairspray still come in those tall metal cans?

@@stevenscott2136 I don't know about the hairspray. That's a good thought.

Another possibility might be one of those long, aluminum water bottles. They often make them fairly long and narrow. I think that's just a fashion choice for those bottles, but they would be close to the right length and maybe not too wide. If they were full of water, they might even have enough heft to be good in a swinging strike. They wouldn't have quite as good a point for concentrating the strike, but if one hit an attacker along the rim, the force might concentrate a bit.

Short sticks are very effectuve and easy for everyone. 16 inches stick is in my opinion the ultimate eveeybody tool. Not too short, not too long.

New sub here. I liked this video. You have a good presence on camera and give a good lesson. I’ve carried collapsible batons for decades, an an alternative to deadly force. My son helped me learn some techniques he learned in the Security Service (USAF). Never really thought about a wooden short-stick, but my favorite baton that I carry, is only about 14 inches long when deployed. I’m gonna have to give the short stick some carry time. I like the idea of having it in non permissive environments (places that don’t allow Steel batons).

Just browsing the TSA website. Kubatons (5-6" ) are prohibited, as well as "martial arts weapons". No golf clubs, bowling pins, hiking sticks. Bocci balls are okay. Could not find a specific on tool length allowed (maybe a deeper dive needed), but had someone I know get a wrench confiscated because it was an inch too long. Years ago in my TKD training, we used rolled up newspaper to make short sticks and wrapped them with duct tape. If you had time, you could throw something higher density in the center (AAA batteries, etc), and use rubber bands or tape to keep it wrapped. MacGyver lives!

Looking for some input here. I've made my 36" x 1" Hanbo, and that is a good size for me (haven't tried a 3/4" diameter.) Now want to supplement with some shorter stick work. Watching this video, and seeing Matt show the extra striking power on the longer Kali stick (think they are 26-28") vs this shorter stick (16"?). So, I've purchased a 36" x 1 1/4" oak dowel with the intent of making TWO sticks. (Via some brief flipping this around, I think it would be too heavy for a Hanbo.) The idea with the heavier diameter was to add a bit of heft, given the shorter length. Any suggestions on how (and why) to divide my 36" dowel into two? I was thinking 2 at 18", but that is a bit longer than Matt's recommendatin here). If I make one Kali stick length, the remaining piece is very short and the large diameter might make the Kali too heavy Equal pieces would let me practice in-house and leave the "twin" in the car. (I realize I could also make two 14-16" pieces, and even have the really short Kubaton stick left too.) Is the Hanbo about the limit for short length in "staff" like moves? (Does anyone use two hand grip/strikes on something as short as a Kali stick? I'm a little taller than average, if that makes a difference. Thanks!
@pasquinilli2 жыл бұрын
I would just cut it in two and use the two 18” sticks like Kali sticks. That length isn’t too short, it’s just different. And you can still do the two handed strikes on 18” too.
@scottanthony34262 жыл бұрын
@@pasquinilli That sounds good. I really appreciate getting your input on that! (Also was waiting for someone to reply to my question "how to cut up?" with something like, "use a saw, dummy". LOL) If I get bold, I may try to fashion some grips. Just bought some rubber end caps for the Hanbo, which I figure could work to make it a walking stick, and reduce damage to jabs on a bag. Funny though, with one on each end, I notice the extra weight. The 1.25" is definitely too heavy as a Hanbo. The reverse sword grip flick-up strikes to the groin are brutally slow for me with that.

@pasquinilli2 жыл бұрын
Yeah. Of course. But also make sure you have some skills for non permissive environments like schools, banks, airports, etc.. Most other countries have taken guns away from their citizens, like the left is trying to do in America. That dictator in Canada is close to seizing guns from his citizens. Also, better know how to fight when your gun jams or you run out of rounds or you lose it because you don’t train weapon retention regularly or you can’t get to it in time, etc…
