Nice to see a young person with a soulful home instead of the beige, white and cream homes I see all over the internet.....yawn. Yours has more of a collected look and THAT will NEVER go out of style because it is unique.

I have a dark moody painting of my great great grandfather. It’s a self portrait. My gran had it up at the top of her stairs when I was growing h up. I was terrified to walk past it to go to bed. I thought his eyes were moving! Now I have it and I know more about my relative. I want it up in our new place but wasn’t sure the rest of the decor would work. This video has given me the confidence to try it out. His portrait reminds me that things that used to scare me don’t have to in the future. A powerful message.

You had me at "Tension". Immediately you went beyond good to great. Accurate and articulate. It IS like the "It Girl" in the room. This is incredibly helpful, thank you. I'm designing a home office. It's very lovely but lacked impact. Tension!! Exactly, thank you! Three minutes in, and I've subscribed. You might enjoy connecting with some of the great practitioners of tension (where money is no object) Alex Papachristidis Axel Vervoordt, and the Blackberry Farm folks. You also brought to my mind the tension I love most; rough vs refined. Gleaming silver service & starched lace on old pecky cypress. Thank you for the great inspo. I will watch your content with much appreciation.

That's so true about tension. And as you said it doesn't have to be something crazy, just something a little off-centre, a little pop of colour and suddenly your space feels more designed and well though out.

The unexpected choice makes a place feel personal and original. My bathroom was looking too much like a 1900s museum with its claw foot tub, wall mount sink, warm, brown wood beadboard, brass, antique tp holder, and old chair. The 130 yo cabinet wasn’t helping but provided fantastic narrow storage. Yesterday I decided the window needed a vinyl privacy film and used one in a more modern pattern with similar colors (including a pretty aqua blue similar to the color I painted the outside of the tub). The towels are more grayed and work without matching. The effect of those TWO more modern elements in a sea of simple Victoriana helped make the room come ALIVE. Lone Fox GETS me. ❤ Love that you gave Drew’ channel exposure. You’re pretty great, too! Keep creating, keep explaining. I have liked and subscribed (please yes ask people to do this to help you succeed here in this space)! I’m excited to watch your video “ no one” watched!

You are fantastic! I want to design a place that reflects my personality, interests and aesthetics. Sometime me it’s hard not to be influenced by what’s trendy at the moment. But I want to really think for myself and be thoughtful and tap into my intuition, like you said. Thank you. It’s a great skill to think critically. Good job!

Fantastic video! When I look at the third picture (of the kitchen) I think the offset pictures help give balance to the fact that the hood and stove are out of center in the room. If the frames were centered on the hood, the room would be weighted too heavily towards the window. It’s almost like a teeter-totter, and that little bit of visual weight brings it back to the sweet spot.

Wonderful video! Your content is always so informative and insightful. Thanks for sharing this info with us. I think the hardest part of this for me to implement is tension, I think that's a big part of what separates those who mimic interior design trends from the designers who set the trends, who are really intuitive and creative. Not saying something like tension can't be learned, but I don't think I have that intuition myself naturally, let's say lol. But regardless of that, I learn more about interior design every time I watch your content and I'm loving it!
@beccaamigo

@@TheQuietCottage I totally agree and it’s really something that clicked for me just recently. Took years for me to even be able to spot it. Thank you for the sweet comment, I appreciate you 🫶🏼

loved this -- I love your piece on tension. You pinpointed exactly what I am drawn to in my own space (and what I think my friends raise an eyebrow to haha!) but it's something I crave to create and currently need to tap into in my own home since I just moved in. If I don't have it, I feel.. unsettled, like things are too.. in place, if that makes sense. Like you said, expected. I need the funky feeling. It's just that personal in the moment decision to place something somewhere, based on a feeling. "So wrong that it starts to feel right" Loved this video, ill be watching it again Xo

That asymetrical kitchen wasn't just cause. They leaned into the already existing asymetry of the archtectue. Most would have either; gone for symetry anyway, or placed the pictures on the other side to rebalance the look.

You spoke about symmetry, in my house the fire place is right at the corner and it’s made of stone, I love having a fireplace but it’s annoying that it’s at the corner, so I have been tempted to knock it down, do you think that’s a good idea?
@elisa5560
@elisa5560 Ай бұрын
Most times, the pictures you showed there was a logical reason for the placement, size and color. When you look at the other pieces in the room, placing pictures seemingly asymmetrical, in reality, it creates balance cause the other pieces are a different visual weight or are off center, too
