That’s why Honda says you don’t have to fix it if you could live with the noise because the thing is made of stainless steel, Toyota use aluminum so if you don’t get to it right away you’re in trouble

My 2015 honda fit rattles on startup found a company that sells replacement locking spring and Instuctions on how to replace the spring without removing the gear assy

Yeah, that's spring-start vtc. They have replacement vtc actuator springs for all Honda & Acura Vtc actuators.

I would’ve stretch the spring a little bit before I put it back that’s the reason they go bad the spring loses tension

Yes, but in this case is obvious that dirt oil or not regular maintenances is cous of problem.

Hi. There are some videos out there regarding the Honda K24 and K20 engines, where they open up the front cover of the VTC actuator and than just take out the actual lock pin spring and stretch it and then they place it back in. Many claim that no more rattle after. What do you think about that? Thanks

@@sleeperworksgarage Yes please do so, because I'm pretty sure all this time Honda kept quiet about this simple fix. How many spent thousands in repairs vs a cheap lock pin spring. I saw a report where Honda states that this lock pin is a cold start up safety to prevent rattling. So I guess we all got our answers here.... Heat + cheap made springs = week over time spring and rattling noise. Thanks

When I opened my R44 actuator on K24 engine it did not have the small cap like thing on the spring. Makes me think if that's the reason why R44 actuators were problematic (referring to cold start rattle)..as the spring does not have a guide over it to push the pin in locking position.

So we can machine the RBB gear as the RBC and we can have a 50 degree cam? actually we can be safe and grind/machine it to 40 degree instead so we don't have to add the safety pin.

Lol big facts! This vtc was literally laying on the junkyard floor attached to the cam still. 😅😅 it was only used for this video to see what's inside. It never got installed.

Have you ever came across a bad vtc gear that caused the timing chain to rattle on startup?. If so, would cleaning the way you did resolve that issue?

No if the timing chain is rattling on startup its probably stretched. I would recommend a new oem timing chain, guides and tensioner and your rattle should be resolved.

@@sleeperworksgarage lots of CRV’S and Accords rattle on cold starts. This is an indication of a bad VTC actuator. You don’t need to replace the timing chain only the VTC actuator. It’s a known problem and there is an updated part from Honda.

Does replacing the spring for a stronger or longer one prevent rattling for coming back?

Yes - done it with my CRV

@@RaulAyanami you could buy a whole new VTC, take the spring out and put it in your current one if you’re afraid. Worst case it doesn’t work and you know you have to replace the whole thing.

@@AmritBanks yeah, already bought one, but i'm looking for a permanent fix as opening the engine to replace it is expensive

@@RaulAyanami yeah replacing the spring is an easy DIY with the right tools - only cost me around 50 bucks because I replaced the valve cover gasket too. Replacing the whole VTC is a tough job but would probably give you a longer term fix but it’s also 800+ at a shop.

@@sleeperworksgarage I’m working on my 2018 Honda civic lx and I have two actuators. The front exhaust one I took apart and there wasn’t oil in it, however the back intake one did have oil but no sludge like in the video. Does that mean intake actuator is bad??

I watched your video like 3 times and there is really nothing to this VTC actuator. I really need to find why the lock pin fails to lock and makes the rattle and this as been ongoing for over 8 years. This is just non sense...

Yea it's a real simple design. I wonder if the port for oil that leads to it just clogs.

@@sleeperworksgarage when you clean those use ones, do they still rattle after? Because if its a sludge problem, your used ones should not rattle after cleaning correct?

Did you figure out the problem? My thinking is that there is a worn oil check valve that lets the oil seep out of the actuator overnight.
